> Chapter 31: The Practice of Blessings

> If people perform virtuous deeds, They will surely reap excellent rewards. Therefore, cultivate meritorious actions widely— Without merit, there is no wealth. Merit is the most precious treasure, Merit is called the inexhaustible store, Merit is like a bright lamp, Merit is like one's own parents. Merit can lead to rebirth among the gods, Merit can guide one to sublime states. Those who cultivate meritorious deeds in the human realm Will obtain results that fulfill their wishes. If one cultivates such meritorious actions, They will surely attract wealth and happiness. One should clearly understand: Without merit, there is no joy. Merit benefits all three times, Its nature is lovable and delightful. Like a shadow that always follows, It never departs, even for a moment. If the gods' merit diminishes, They will soon fall from their state. Therefore, regarding meritorious deeds, One should cultivate them continuously. Without merit, there is much hardship, One is often born in lowly places. Without virtue, hoping for pleasant results Is like seeking butter from sand. Foolish people are deceived by their own minds, They constantly turn away from meritorious deeds. Since they do not cultivate wholesome actions, Their evils and wrongdoing keep growing. In this very life, if one cultivates many virtues, Merit follows wherever one goes. Because of this karmic cause, One will later be born in the heavenly realms. If one delights in performing meritorious deeds, They are respected by all people. Their body is free from all oppression, And their mind remains constantly at peace. Good people who practice wholesome ways Attain the finest joy among all joys. Through these pure causes, They will eventually reach the path of enlightenment. Therefore, all living beings Should diligently cultivate meritorious deeds. When impermanence suddenly arrives, All else will surely belong to others. If one repeatedly engages In excellent meritorious actions, According to each kind of cause, They will experience corresponding results. In all the worlds, Good and evil deeds are the masters. One should diligently cultivate wholesome actions, For they can provide protection. If one abandons wholesome ways And delights in committing various wrongdoings, Because of these causes, They will suffer the pains of hell. As long as life has not yet ended, And the body and limbs are still intact, Strive diligently in cultivation— Such a person possesses great wisdom. If one teaches the Dharma well, Able to awaken others, Leading them to the city of nirvana, Safe, free from sorrow and fear. If, regarding that true Dharma, One explains even a four-line verse, Revealing the path of liberation, That is the foremost refuge. Skilfully proclaiming the true Dharma Can quickly accomplish the path of Buddhahood. Though the lord of gods had some past cause, Great wealth alone could not bring this. If one clings to worldly riches, Dharma wisdom does not grow. Jewels and treasures can be scattered and destroyed, But Dharma wealth is used without end. Only the wholesome deeds one has cultivated Follow one for hundreds of thousands of lives. All the wealth one possesses Will not follow even a single step. Moreover, water, fire, thieves and robbers Can damage one's property. But wholesome dharmas in the mind Cannot be seized, even in the slightest. Even after passing through vast eons, Enjoying immeasurable sensual pleasures, They are certain to be destroyed— One must earnestly seek the true Dharma. Only this one wholesome dharma Should be guarded with diligence. Doing good lengthens life, Doing evil hastens destruction. One should draw near to wholesome dharmas, Practicing as taught. Then suffering will not arise, And one will attain supreme joy. If one delights in doing wrong, Constantly practicing what is not Dharma, They will later fall into hell And suffer immeasurable extreme pain. Throughout countless eons, Always take refuge in the Three Jewels. First one enjoys heavenly pleasures, Later one attains the fruit of peace. Observe the present rewards one experiences— They all arise from past deeds. Whether the causes are pleasant or painful, Each is distinct without error. One should firmly uphold pure precepts And broadly cultivate meritorious deeds. Day and night, continuously, Like a river that never stops flowing. If one abandons wholesome dharmas, This life is lived in vain. If one does not neglect wholesome causes, One attains the happiness of humans and gods. When one's store of merit is complete And one properly upholds the true Dharma, Such a person in the world Is supreme, without equal. Better to lose one's very life Than to go against the true Dharma. Those who depart from the true Dharma Drift along with all kinds of evil. The foolish, clinging to sensual pleasures, Abandon the eye of the true Dharma. They waste this present life Like rain falling into the sea. They do not protect their precepts, Delighting in committing various evils. In the field of their minds, Seeds of virtue have no chance to grow. One should observe with single-pointed mind The most supreme, pure Dharma, Attaining the place of no extinction, Where suffering does not exist. If the sense faculties are left unrestrained, Dwelling attached to sense objects, Then one is entangled by them, Spinning in samsara without rest. If one is not attached to evil dharmas, Shining like refined gold, One departs from the perils of the three realms And attains ultimate stillness. Endowed with pure wisdom, Always respecting the true Dharma, When hearing Dharma teachers, One can believe and accept what is heard. Always make offerings to the Three Jewels, Serve one's parents with filial respect. One can then reach the city of nirvana, Abiding in the highest peace. Possessing the appearance of a renunciant, Skilfully proclaiming the true Dharma, Diligently practicing the holy life, One attains the most excellent sublime joy. Among all forms of giving, Giving Dharma is unsurpassed. Arouse courageous effort, And cultivate the meditative absorptions. Such Dharma teachers Are praised by the Tathagata. If one does not develop pure faith, One is no different from an animal. One should always delight in the peaceful Dharma Spoken by the noble and wise, And toward the three fields of merit, Cultivate practice seeking liberation. Toward those Dharma teachers, Generate the highest respect. For the sake of seeking the true Dharma, The mind never grows weary. Observing the objects of the five senses, One sees they truly are not happiness. Even if seen, one should not grasp them— This is the sage's admonition. Delighting in cultivating the true Dharma, One sees the path free from defilement. Such a person enjoys the bliss of Dharma, Beyond what even the gods can attain. The wholesome deeds done in the present Are like a shadow following one's back. Therefore, with one-pointed mind, Always draw near to that goodness. With the eye of wisdom, one observes The future results of suffering. Fools delight in doing evil; The wise are always fearful in their hearts. Because they possess true wisdom, They see all evil as dangerous. Always united with goodness, They are freed from all afflictions. If one indulges in foolishness, Delighting only in sense objects, When pleasure ends and suffering appears, One toils in vain, then regrets with sorrow. Even until the end of life, Let the mind not be scattered. Always cultivate meritorious deeds— Then one can escape the evil realms. Life swiftly passes away, And blessings do not last long either. One should take hold of the true Dharma To become the lord of the contented gods. If one abandons wholesome dharmas, One becomes heedless and lazy. No longer cultivating meritorious deeds, One will soon fall and be lost. While one still hears of strength and health, And the body and limbs are undamaged, Broadly perform various meritorious deeds— Later there will be no sorrow or regret. If one does not cultivate the causes of merit, Delighting only in heedlessness, Know that such a person Is the root of hell's suffering. Though such a one possesses all faculties, They do not delight in the true Dharma. How can they seek to support life And nurture many dependents? Constantly, day and night, Let the mind hold the true Dharma. Draw near to Dharma teachers, And one will be far from all faults and defilements. Through upholding precepts, one is born in heaven, Enjoying all kinds of sensual pleasures. The foolish, neglecting meritorious deeds, Will soon fall from that state. Delight in generating pure wisdom, Adorning the body with the jewel of precepts. Always fear the snake of desire— Then all the gods will praise you. Because one loves wholesome dharmas, The gods always pay respect. If a perverted mind arises, One becomes poor, without merit or wisdom. Wholesome dharmas are like a bridge; Upholding precepts enables one to cross. Without cultivating those good practices, How can one cross the ocean of suffering? Following and cultivating good conduct, One will surely attain good results. For hundreds of thousands of koṭis of eons, That goodness cannot be destroyed. Constantly cultivate giving and precepts, Protecting them with wisdom. For all those who come seeking, Lead them to take refuge in the Three Jewels. Skilfully cultivate the three kinds of giving, Which can cure the three kinds of faults. By departing from those faults, One attains pure merits and virtues. Delight in perfecting pure precepts, Generating certain and true faith. Breaking the suffering of the three realms, Like the sun dispelling cloud cover. If one is endowed with the true Dharma, All the gods honor and respect them. Such a person will attain The most supreme place of stillness.
