Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Yun'an Puyan The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Yun'an Puyan is the enduring work of the eminent monk Yun'an Puyan of the Linji school during the Southern Song dynasty, compiled by his disciples Yuanjing, Zhineng, and Weiyan. This record preserves the master's teachings, dialogues on gong'an, and essential instructions for practice, centrally embodying the Chan approach of the Linji school: directly pointing to the human mind, seeing one's nature and attaining Buddhahood. As a significant text of Southern Song Chan Buddhism, the record not only reflects the instructional style of Chan communities at that time but also transmits the essence of the Yangqi branch of the Linji lineage. Yun'an Puyan studied under Songyuan Chongyue; his recorded sayings are renowned for their sharp and vigorous exchanges, exerting a profound influence on the later development of Chan Buddhism. It remains an important classic for the study of Chan thought in the Song dynasty and the dharma lineage of the Linji school.
