The *Prajñapti-śāstra* is an important treatise of the Sarvāstivāda school. Originally composed in Sanskrit, its author is unknown, and it is traditionally held to have originated from the Buddha’s own teachings. During the Northern Song dynasty, Dharmapāla and Weijing, among others, were commissioned by imperial decree to translate it into Chinese. This treatise focuses on employing the concept of *prajñapti* (designation) to elucidate both worldly and supramundane phenomena, offering a profound analysis of topics such as names and characteristics, cause and effect, and systematically organizing Buddhist terminology and doctrine. As one of the seven core treatises of the Sarvāstivāda, it laid the foundation for the Abhidharma philosophical system and exerted a profound influence on the development of later sectarian Buddhist thought, making it an essential text for the study of early Buddhist philosophy.

In the past, I drew near to all wise ones, Diligently seeking and examining every virtuous cause. With the aspiration to bring forth the highest benefit, In all places, I never grew weary or retreated.

Through the power of these deeds, I now possess keen intelligence and clear wisdom. Swiftly arousing a mind of vigorous effort, I now become the Wheel-Turning King’s General of the Army.
