The Four Lessons of Liaofan is a collection of family teachings written by the lay Buddhist Yuan Liaofan during the Ming Dynasty. Blending Confucian and Buddhist thought, it was completed in the 16th century. Its content is divided into four parts: the Study of Establishing One’s Destiny, the Method of Correcting Faults, the Way to Accumulate Goodness, and the Benefits of Humility. It explains how destiny can be transformed through virtuous conduct and moral cultivation, emphasizing cause and effect as well as self-renewal. Although not a canonical Buddhist sutra, it is highly esteemed in Buddhist circles and regarded as an important guide for lay practitioners. The book has profoundly influenced Chinese folk beliefs and moral education, embodying the practical spirit of Humanistic Buddhism.
