The Jia Tai Pu Deng Lu, compiled by the eminent monk Zheng Shou during the Jia Tai era of the Southern Song Dynasty, stands as a significant Chan lineage history in the "lamp record" style following the Wu Deng Hui Yuan. Comprising thirty volumes, it collects the encounter dialogues, biographical accounts, and gāthās of successive Chan masters, encompassing lineages such as Linji and Yunmen. Its purpose is to universally illuminate the Chan Dharma and generously benefit learners. This work systematically transmits the Chan lineage and its teachings, serving as an important document for the study of Song Dynasty Chan history and thought. Occupying a pivotal position in Buddhist history that connects the past with the future, it is celebrated alongside the Wu Deng Hui Yuan as one of the twin jewels of Chan lamp records.

Record of the Buddha

Zhao Deng says: Before the Tathagata entered nirvana, he instructed Mahākāśyapa, saying, "I entrust to you the pure Dharma-eye, the wondrous mind of nirvana, and the true, formless reality—the subtle, correct Dharma. You must preserve and protect it." He also instructed Ānanda to assist in its transmission, ensuring it would never be interrupted.

Guang Deng says: Great Kāśyapa told Ānanda, "Before the Blessed One had passed away, he secretly entrusted the Treasury of the True Dharma Eye to me under the Multi-Son Stupa. Now I pass it on to you." These two accounts are based on the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, the Āgama Sūtras, and other scriptures, following their narratives.

After this, patriarch after patriarch transmitted the teaching through twenty-eight generations until it reached Bodhidharma. From Bodhidharma, it passed through five generations to Caoxi (Huineng). From Caoxi, after one more transmission, diverging traditions emerged, leading to the lineages of Qingyuan and Nanyue. Within ten generations of Qingyuan and Nanyue, further divisions gave rise to the schools: Linji, Caodong, Yunmen, Guiyang, and Fayan.

Details on the esoteric teachings and profound principles of the Indian Buddhas and patriarchs, and the complete chronology of their transmission, can be found at the beginning of the three Transmission of the Lamp records. In the present compilation, we will not repeat them. Instead, we will simply arrange the records in order starting from the first patriarch of this land, Bodhidharma, and continuing onward for future generations. As for the Guiyang and Fayan schools, which became extinct after only a few transmissions, we are unable to record them. (Details on present-day masters are not yet available; this remains for future sages. )
