### 廿四後周僧崖

> 24\. Sengya of the Later Zhou Dynasty

住益州多寶寺。於城西燒左手五指。道俗十萬餘人權□□〔考〕權□□寶集作擁之。人問痛否。答曰。心既無痛。指何痛〔考〕痛寶集作病也。乃謂弟子曰我滅度。後好供養病人及醜陋者。此徒多諸佛菩薩權化。自非大心平等。何能一切恭敬。當往生時。或見天花。及僧崖披班納錫枝。與數十僧。乘空西沒。

> He resided at Duobao Temple in Yizhou. He burned the five fingers of his left hand west of the city. Over a hundred thousand people, both monastic and lay, gathered thickly around him. When asked, "Does it hurt?" he replied, "Since the mind feels no pain, how could the fingers hurt?" He then told his disciples, "After my passing, take good care of the sick and the disfigured. These beings are often manifested by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in various forms. Unless one's mind is greatly vast and impartial, how can one show reverence to all equally?" At the time of his passing, heavenly flowers were seen, along with monk Sengya, dressed in patched robes and carrying a tin staff, ascending into the western sky with dozens of monks, disappearing into the void.
