The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Zongbao Daodu was spoken by the eminent Caodong school monk Zongbao Daodu during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and later compiled by his dharma descendant Jin Shi. Living through the transition between the Ming and Qing dynasties, Master Daodu inherited the Chan lineage of Boshan Yuanlai and dedicated himself to revitalizing the Chan tradition. The record includes his teachings, dharma talks, letters, and poetic verses, covering essential points of Chan practice, the nature of mind, and practical cultivation. It reflects the integration of the Caodong school's silent illumination style with the characteristics of its time. This text serves as an important document for studying Buddhist thought during the Ming-Qing transition, particularly the transmission and development of the Caodong school. It has had a profound influence on later Chan studies and holds a significant place among Buddhist scriptures.
