The Recorded Sayings of Venerable Yungu is a compilation of the teachings of the eminent Ming dynasty monk Yungu Fahui (1500–1579), edited and compiled by his disciples Zongjing, Daojie, Weineng, Zonghui, Zulu, and other students. This work was completed during the late Ming revival of Chan Buddhism. It records Venerable Yungu’s discourses, pointed dialogues, meditation instructions, and correspondence. The content is profound yet accessible, emphasizing the dual cultivation of Chan and Pure Land, along with practical application in mind-nature. As a distinguished master of the Linji school, Yungu Fahui’s influence was far-reaching. His thought harmonizes Chan and Pure Land teachings and played a significant role in advancing the development of Buddhism during the Ming and Qing periods. This recorded sayings collection is an important document for studying Ming dynasty Chan thought and the teachings of Venerable Yungu, holding a pivotal position in Buddhist history as a bridge between past and future.
