The Seven Luminaries Disaster-Averting Determination was translated and composed by the Indian translator Jinjuzha during the Tang Dynasty, belonging to the esoteric Buddhist canon. This sutra emerged during the flourishing period of Tang Dynasty esoteric Buddhism, integrating Indian astrological practices with Buddhist concepts of protecting the nation and averting calamities. Its primary content is based on the movements of the seven luminaries (sun, moon, and five planets), explaining the correlations between celestial phenomena and disasters, while providing corresponding mantras and ritual procedures to resolve misfortunes. This scripture reflects the fusion of Buddhism with medieval astrological culture, holding a unique position within Chinese esoteric Buddhist literature and serving as an important text for studying the interaction between Buddhist cosmology and secular beliefs.

Seven Luminaries Disaster-Averting Methods, Volume One

Compiled by the Brahmin Monk Jinjuzha of Western India

The celestial sphere is divided into 365 and one-quarter degrees, with the sun moving one degree each day. The moon moves 13 and one-quarter degrees daily, completing 397 and two-quarter degrees in a month. When the sun travels 30 degrees, it aligns once with the moon. The position of the sun and moon at the time of a person's birth determines their destiny star.

When the sun completes one full cycle of the heavens, it marks a year for living beings. When the moon completes one full cycle, it marks a month for living beings. If, at the time of birth, the five planets align with the ruling elements of the year, a noble person will be born. If they align with the moon's elements, a noble person will also be born. If the moon is in a position of decline, weakness, imprisonment, or death, the person born will likely be ordinary.

When the five planets align with the sun or moon, causing eclipses or disasters, it will affect the destiny star and bring changes in fortune, whether good or bad.

Now, the Brahmin monk Jinjuzha from the Western Regions has invoked the twenty-eight constellation deities to inquire about fortune and misfortune, depict their forms, and explain the methods for averting disasters caused by the seven luminaries, as detailed below.

Chapter 1: The Method of Divining and Averting Disasters by the Sun Palace

When the sun reaches the position of one's destiny star, that person is destined to receive honors, gain respect from others, and obtain official rank and wealth. If they had any previous offenses, all will be forgiven. But if the sun is eclipsed while in the position of one's destiny star, that person will face grave calamities and severe misfortune, and it is appropriate to perform a ritual to avert them.

The method for averting disaster is as follows: First, one must know the exact day of the eclipse. Five days before the eclipse, begin observing purity and fasting. Then, draw the image of the deity. The deity has a human form with the head of a lion, wearing celestial robes, and holding a black treasure vase. Carry this image above your head. On the day the sun passes beyond your destiny star, cast the image into flowing water toward the east, and the disaster will disperse of its own accord.
