**The Sūtra of the Mantra of Kukkurāṭa Spoken by the Buddha** Thus have I heard. At one time, the Bhagavān was dwelling in the Jetavana Grove of Anāthapiṇḍada's park in Śrāvastī, together with a great assembly of bhikṣus and a great multitude of bodhisattvas. At that time, the Bhagavān addressed the assembly, saying, "There is a mantra called Kukkurāṭa. It can eliminate all calamities, eradicate karmic obstructions, increase blessings and wisdom, and fulfill all wholesome aspirations. If there are good men or good women who, with a mind of pure faith, uphold, recite, and practice this mantra, all their wishes will be accomplished." Then the Bhagavān proclaimed the mantra, saying: <note>Oṁ kukkurāṭa svāhā.</note> "Bhikṣus and bodhisattvas, you should know that this Kukkur

The Buddha Speaks the Kukkuṭa Dhāraṇī Sūtra

Translated by Tripitaka Master Faxian of the Western Heaven, Presented by the Court

Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of the Benefactor of the Orphans and the Solitary, in the kingdom of Shravasti. He was accompanied by a great assembly of monks, and also by devas, humans, asuras, and gandharvas, who had all come together to sit in the gathering.

At that time, the Buddha spoke to the venerable Ananda, saying: "Listen carefully, for I have a dhāraṇī called Kukkurā, which possesses great power. It can bring good fortune, dispel the possession of evil spirits and malevolent celestial influences, and cure all kinds of illnesses—such as those caused by improper food, fevers, headaches, migraines, coughs, wheezing, hemorrhoids, white discharge, and various skin ailments. Ananda, it can even prolong the lives of those at the brink of death. Therefore, I shall now teach it to you. Ananda, if anyone hears this dhāraṇī and, with unwavering resolve, recites, upholds, and practices it, that person will reap immeasurable and boundless benefits." Then the Blessed One proclaimed the dhāraṇī:

Ye Dharma Hetu Prabhava Hetun Teshan Tathagato Hyavadat Teshan Cha Yo Nirodha Evam Vadi Mahashramanah Svaha

At that time, after the World-Honored One had spoken this mantra, he addressed Ananda, saying: "Wherever this mantra is present, I do not see any beings in heaven or on earth—whether heavenly beings, demons, ascetics, or Brahmins—who dare to oppose or transgress it. You should uphold it and teach it to others, so that many may gain great benefit." Ananda and all those gathered in the assembly—heavenly beings, humans, asuras, and gandharvas—heard what the Buddha had said, rejoiced in it with faith, paid their respects, and departed.
