後序

Afterword

Formerly, when I was serving as an official in charge of transport along the Huai River, I dreamed that a monk led me to an old temple foundation. There were a dozen massive beams, and a large signboard above them proclaimed, "Xi Province," shining with splendor in gold and green. I awoke, finding it strange, and told people about the dream, but no one could interpret it.

Several months later, a monk in charge of the Puzhao Temple was jailed due to a public dispute. Born in Si and having traveled back and forth on official duty for over twenty years, I lamented the disorder among the meditation halls and wanted to revive them. But the monks kept running to the homes of the powerful, seeking shelter, and my resolve was never fulfilled. At that time, the monk Xuefengliao was living at Changlu Temple, with 1,500 monks. Today, Tiantong Jue is the senior leader, and everyone put him forward. I urged him to practice the way of the ancestors diligently, without fear, and far and near, people turned to him, and shoes piled up outside his door.

One day, I met him again, and when I asked about his hometown, he said, "I am from Xi Province." Suddenly, I recalled the previous dream, and it fit perfectly like a seal matching a tally. Everyone who heard this bowed in gratitude and praise, saying such a matter should not go unrecorded. But I was too lazy to write it down.

Two years later, in my retirement in Qingjiang, the monk Huici came from Tiantong via Xuefeng, bringing letters from the two elders, with sincere concern. He presented Tiantong's commentaries on the dialogues of ancient masters, so I recorded the general outline of this dream event and wrote it at the end. This is not only a way to refine the meditation community but also a notable event in the monastery's history.

Written on the 22nd day of the 11th month of the 4th year of the Shaoxing era [1134 AD]. Xianglin Hermit, Xiang Ziyan.
