Attendant Puchong Compiles the Dharma
On the second day of the eleventh month in the third year of the Jianyan era, the master accepted an invitation to give a talk. A monk asked: "Above the peak of Great White Mountain, auspicious clouds drift gently; beside the cliff of Linglong, propitious energy lingers unbroken. What is the very first phrase?" The master said: "Propitious energy lingers unbroken." The monk pressed: "This is still what the student says." The master said: "Your tongue is my tongue." The monk said: "One word encompasses all phenomena; one phrase responds to all capacities." The master asked: "Which phrase is that?" The monk replied: "Precisely without duality; clearly without concealment." The master said: "You must have your feet firmly on the ground for this." The monk bowed.
The master then said, "The Dharma is not as complicated as all that. It simply requires that in every moment, you let your body and mind be utterly empty and free. Not a single thread clings; vast and unbound, with nothing to rely on. Your original, luminous awareness remains unclouded, not dimmed by even a hair's breadth. If you practice like this, you will naturally harmonize with every moment and respond appropriately to every situation. Not the slightest speck of dust will obstruct you. Then you can turn all the sages around and place them behind you—only then can you be called a true monk. But if you rely on others' doors, accept their judgments, and receive their offerings, aren't you just a blind donkey following the herd? Since it is so, after all, what is to be done? If you do not return, then return—just like that. Who will contend with you over the misty waves of the five lakes?"
On the winter solstice, during the assembly, a monk asked: “With the turning of the pivot and the shifting of the axis, the first yang energy is born once more. Beyond the realm of heaven and earth, does this very message still exist?” The master said: “Where the sun and moon do not reach, past and present have no end.” The monk pressed: “The cold cliffs receive the warmth of spring; flowers bloom on branches that do not sprout.” The master said: “Still an outsider.” The monk asked: “What is it like to be one inside the gate?” The master said: “Cannot be named or described.” The monk bowed.
The master then said: When darkness reaches its peak, light is born; when strength is exhausted, the situation turns. The azure dragon sheds its bones and soars; the black leopard parts the mist and transforms.
I will take the skulls of the Buddhas of the three times and string them together as a single rosary. Don’t speak of what’s obvious or hidden—truly, it’s the face of the sun and the face of the moon. Even if your measure is full and your scale balanced, still you cannot match my selling dear and buying cheap.
O assembly of Chan practitioners, do you understand? The bright pearl in the bowl turns without being stirred.
Xuefeng asked a monk, "Where are you going?" The monk replied, "I'm going to join the communal work." Xuefeng said, "Go." Yunmen remarked, "Xuefeng recognized someone through his words." The master said, "Don't move a muscle. If you move, you'll get thirty blows. Why is that? A flawless piece of jade loses its virtue when carved."
The master ascended the hall and said: Good Chan practitioners. The clouds have just parted, the snow’s mood has turned. Clear light intoxicates the heart and then awakens it; pure white dazzles the eyes and then shifts. Truly you must wholly transcend, without borrowing; stand alone, without reliance. Within this, to penetrate the principle—how many attain the subtle? Good Chan practitioners. This is the time of dense continuity, the moment for turning the foundation. Can you comprehend it? After a long pause, he said: Chu Ping does not speak to the foolish sheep lying down. To whom is the clear message entrusted? Investigate.
The master ascended the platform and said: Subtle existence, clear and still—it is not mere nothingness. True illumination, luminous and aware—it is not mere being. Now step back and look once more within: Where the white clouds break, the mountain stands bare and lean.
The Master ascended the hall and recounted: One day, Dharma-Eye was seated when he suddenly pointed to the curtain before him. At that moment, two monks went together to roll it up. Dharma-Eye said, “One gains, one loses.”
The Master said: “The one who went like that was wrong; the one who went like that was close. When wrong, he was wrong to the very end; when close, he was close enough to see the truth. Acquaintances fill the world—how many are truly known to the heart?”
The master ascended the platform and said:
"Boundless and pure, wisdom is present throughout. Universally responsive without fixed form, spirit meets it everywhere.
Wisdom is empty, yet naturally aware and self-illuminating. Spirit is active, yet continuous and unceasing.
Thus, in every moment and every place, one can radiate great light and accomplish great Buddha-deeds.
Therefore it is said: Mountains and rivers pose no barrier— light shines through everywhere.
And also: If one wishes to enter the realm of Buddha, purify the mind like empty space. Transcend all appearances and attachments, so that wherever the mind turns, there is no obstruction.
How then should one practice to attain such harmony?
The moon on water—serene, facing itself. Wind in the pines—clear, never ceasing."
The master ascended the platform and brought up the story of Dongshan asking the monk of Hidden Mountain, "What truth did you see that made you dwell in this mountain?" The monk of Hidden Mountain replied, "I saw two clay oxen fighting and plunging into the sea—until now, no news has come."
The master said, "Good fellow Chan practitioners! In autumn, the mountains grow sparse and lean; the moon sets, and the pool lies empty. The mind of wandering clouds and flowing waters fades away; the path of merit and achievement is cut off. Now tell me, at just such a moment, how should one understand? The jade wheel of the mind turns, and laughter arises—yet when directly encountered, it remains unrecognized."
The monk asked, "When all things in the world cease their ordinary activities, what then?"
The master replied, "Free and unbound, vividly alive."
The monk said, "So then, nothing in the entire world is hidden away."
The master said, "Recognize the single finger of Kṣitigarbha."
The monk said, "All night the rain of falling blossoms; the whole city flows with fragrance."
The master said, "Be careful not to bump your head or stub your toes."
The master then said: "The three thousand worlds are gathered within a single seal, yet the meaning of the characters shines brightly. The eighty-four thousand Dharma gates are contained within a speck of dust, yet all categories are fully present. O virtuous meditators, the monk Juzhi's 'one-finger Zen' was something he relied upon for thirty years. Wasn't he a fellow who was thoroughly unobstructed in all directions, perfectly clear on all sides, immediately equal, and freely wandering at ease? Do you understand? Observe how he blends warmth and light, how he performs all manner of elegant acts while playing with shadows. Investigate!"
The Master ascended the platform and said: "O virtuous meditators, the one who has swallowed all the Buddhas of the three times—why can he not open his mouth? The one who illuminates and penetrates the four directions—why can he not close his eyes? All these ailments and pains—I have gathered them up for you in one moment. But how can one achieve complete and unobstructed fluency? Do you understand? Tear open Mount Hua to reveal the color of the heavens; release the Yellow River to hear its roar as it reaches the sea."
The master ascended the hall and recounted:
Daowu and Jianyuan went together to offer condolences at a household. Jianyuan patted the coffin and asked, "Alive or dead?"
Daowu said, "I won't say 'alive,' and I won't say 'dead.'"
Jianyuan asked, "Why won't you say?"
Daowu replied, "I won't say, I won't say."
On the way back, Jianyuan said to Daowu, "Master, quickly tell me! If you don't tell me, I'll hit you."
Daowu said, "Hit me if you must, but I won't say."
Jianyuan then struck him.
The master commented: "Daowu speaking like that was already like covering his ears to steal a bell. Then he got a good beating—it was like losing money and still getting punished. Do you all understand this?"
The monk Jue composed a verse:
Alive or dead—I won't say, I won't say. We only see the foolish dog angrily chasing a clod of earth. Who has witnessed the dead snake startling out of the grass? Look carefully within the grove of your own home: On the branch that does not sprout, spring sun arrives early.
The master ascended the platform and said:
Good friends in meditation. Coming and going among the mountains, one realizes the green mountain itself is the body. The green mountain is the body, the body is the self—so where then can dust and sense faculties find a place to settle? For all of you, I have already removed the "table mountain" before your eyes. But what about the phrase spoken from the summit of the "host mountain"? How would you express it? If you can speak it, then you will know that what I just said still belongs to the affairs of the "guest mountain" bowing in greeting.
Good friends in meditation. If the host does not know there is a guest, then there is no way to respond to the world. If the guest does not know there is a host, then there is no vision to transcend the dust. Tell me, when principle and phenomena are perfectly merged, and host and guest are united—what then?
After a long pause, he said: Do you understand yet?
At midnight, a wooden man knocks on the moon's door. At dawn, a phoenix chick laughs, holding a flower in its beak.
The Master ascended the hall and said:
Drifting and flowing, the clouds upon the mountain; Murmuring and rippling, the water at the mountain’s base. I ask those who dwell amidst the clouds and waters: Where else should one seek the self?
O assembly of Chan practitioners, When the mind has no abiding place, the Dharma transcends seeing and hearing. When wisdom has no object to grasp, the Way surpasses thought and description. Lingyun simply awakened upon seeing the peach blossoms; Thirty years of delusion, today—wisdom.
What about in your own share? If your eyes lack discernment, a lifetime of poverty awaits.
Master Zhenxie entered the mountain. Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "Meeting yet nothing happens; not coming, still I think of you. What is the matter of meeting?" The master said, "White hair laughs, hanging down the crown; green eyes coldly shine upon people." The monk pressed, "If so, then the eyebrows join, the nose bridges touch." The master said, "You must further know there is a time of sharing one body and one life." The monk asked, "What is the time of sharing one body and one life?" The master said, "Axes and blades cannot cut it apart."
The master said: Good Zen practitioners. The jade forest bathed in moonlight, the young phoenix on the crimson mountain soars and sings. The snowy reeds float in autumn, the white sand geese follow in formation. Threading a needle in the dark, striking the vital point in the subtle. Awakening the mind-ground—all share the same lamp. Illuminating the spiritual terrace—no different shadows remain. The blue mountain father stands lofty as ever; the white cloud child drifts freely everywhere. Though a thousand miles share the same wind, how can it compare to not a single thread of separation? Where the path forks and nearly ends, one must shift position to let it flow. Where words reach their limit, one must borrow light to make arrangements. O Zen practitioners, at such a time, in such a place, with such transmission, such establishment—only such a person can accomplish it. I dare ask you all: What kind of person is this "such a person"? Do you understand the matter of these arrangements? On the wagtail plain, the monk's words; on the cherry-branch, spring in full bloom.
The master ascended the hall and brought up the case: Layman Pang asked Master Ma, "Who is the one who does not associate with the myriad dharmas?" Master Ma said, "When you can drink the entire West River in one gulp, I will tell you."
The master said: Drink the West River, then I'll tell you— Master Ma refused to fall into the weeds. The three thousand world-systems become a single autumn; The bright moon and coral shine coldly upon each other.
The master ascended the platform and said: Within this lies a hidden light—like the moon at midnight shining through a rhinoceros horn. In its midst, movement stirs—like sudden thunder carving ivory. The wonder lies in approaching from the side—do not rashly touch what is noble and precious. Bodhidharma faced the wall for nine years—a family disgrace not meant to be aired. The Second Patriarch bowed three times and stood at once—who knew his stammering mouth held such inner sharpness? Today, I, Tiantong, have also acted quite recklessly.
The master ascended the platform and said:
Alone with my staff, I long wandered through waters and clouds. Why have I now laid it down and ceased? One point pierces the dark, bright and clear. Perfectly merging, cold and still. In the darkness, one must penetrate the golden needle's point. Turning back, the jade thread's end is still hidden. Today, the family style beyond the kalpas is discerned. That one and this one are truly companions.
The master ascended the platform and said: "If you see horns beyond the wall, you know it must be an ox. If you see smoke beyond the mountain, you know it must be a fire. Now tell me, what is it that you all know for certain? Do you truly understand it?"
The rooster’s crow heralds the dawn, the birdsong finds its perch. The scent of early plum blossoms carries the news that spring is near.
The master ascended the hall and cited this case:
Deep and Bright, two senior monks, saw a fisherman's net catch a carp, which then leapt free. Deep said, "Bright, my brother, how splendid! Just like a true monk." Bright replied, "Even so, wouldn't it have been better not to have gotten caught in the net in the first place?" Deep said, "You still lack awakening."
The master commented: "Within the myriad phenomena, the whole body naturally has its living connection. After merging into a single color, turning around, one must find the vital path. Since it is so, he truly is a genuine monk. Now tell me, how should a monk's practice be carried out?"
Skillfully holding the wordless seal on the road, The horse's hooves never touch the dusty mud.
The master ascended the hall. A monk asked, "What kind of person is it that even the Patriarchs and Buddhas dare not approach?"
The master said, "Mount Hua's peaks pierce the sky, emerald green."
The monk pressed, "What kind of person is it that even ghosts and spirits cannot fathom?"
The master said, "The Yellow River's current rolls along its bed."
The monk said, "If so, then the west wind can make leaves fall, and the bright moon knows how to follow the flow."
The master said, "What, then, is the staff of life and death for a patch-robed monk?"
The monk said, "Master, why do you cover your ears to steal a bell?"
The master said, "Chop at your forehead and gaze toward Fusang."
The Master then said, "Good fellow Chan practitioners. When evening clouds obscure the house, you should know the weary spirit bird seeks the forest to rest. As dawn's light shifts across the mountains, you suddenly see a dead snake startlingly emerge from the grass. At the jade maiden's loom, the shuttle's path—cut off, yet returns again. On the wooden man's tongue, a song—from emptiness, it is sung forth. Walking steadily within the empty kalpa's vessel, shaking one's head beyond the age of primordial sound. Only those who understand can truly bear witness. But tell me, when adapting to changing circumstances and following conditions, how should one conduct oneself? When the loom's thread does not hang upon the shuttle's task, patterns emerge freely—their meaning naturally distinct."
The Master ascended the hall and said: Before the kalpa, the opportunity; behind the elbow, the seal. Used without a trace, empty yet inexhaustible. Who crafted the great thousand worlds? They arise from the bright, empty inch of the mind. If you wish to remove the mud-stain, the master craftsman does not spare his axe.
Then he called out loudly: “O meditator who can bear this responsibility— take care of your nostrils!”
Master Zhenxie was invited to give a teaching. The abbot addressed the assembly, saying:
"Having traveled a hundred thousand miles carrying his robe and bowl, he arrives—yet to transmit the Dharma, he remains silent, wordless. Having journeyed four thousand miles to sell his cloth sitting mat, he comes—helpless but to laugh heartily, 'Ha-ha!'
He hoed weeds to deceive Liang Sui; he shut the gate and pushed out Shaoyang. Some take up the true command and bear the responsibility; others decline side teachings and glimpse the truth in an instant.
At Jingkou, he met again with Master Chuanzi, and only then understood how deep is the kindness of teacher and friend. In Linji, he revisited Dayu, and only then believed how earnest is the old woman's heart.
If it was so in ancient times, it is also so today."
The abbot then descended from the seat, and the assembly went together to invite Master Zhenxie to enter the hall and teach the gathering.
The master ascended the hall and said: On the fifth day of the fifth month, the Heavenly Midday Festival, From the tips of all plants, life and death are seen. Licorice and coptis are bitter and sweet by nature; Ginseng and aconite are distinguished by warmth and cold. Sweetgrass and stinking weeds cannot be hidden—both hang their claws; Flavors do not deceive the newly risen crescent moon. Perfectly clear, knowing arises in the mind’s thoughts— Mahākāśyapa could discern them all.
O virtuous meditators, What does the discerning? It is the mind. The Venerable Kāśyapa long ago extinguished the root of mind. Perfectly clear, knowing—it does not arise from mental thought. So how can one arrive at just the right place? When people are even, they do not speak; When water is level, it does not flow.
The master ascended the platform and spoke of the time when Zhaozhou came to Yunju. Yunju said, "Old man, you're advanced in years. Why not seek a place to settle down?"
Zhaozhou replied, "Where would you have me settle?"
Yunju said, "There is an ancient temple foundation at the foot of the mountain."
Zhaozhou said, "Why don't you take care of it yourself, Venerable?"
Yunju then let the matter rest.
The master said, "You settle, I settle. All the ten directions and the three times are gathered together in an instant. The moon is drunk, the clouds are drowsy, the water rhinoceros departs. Turning the body, the coral tree is knocked over."
The Master ascended the hall. A monk asked, "What kind of person is it who rests from all affairs and does not rely on a thousand sages?"
The Master said, "A Vajra-iron Kunlun beneath the diamond realm."
The monk advanced and said, "From the beginning, without companions, solitary and unique."
The Master said, "Turning and meeting, what matter should be discussed?"
The monk said, "A clear breeze brushes the white moon."
The Master said, "At that moment, a single phrase must be clearly pointed out."
The monk said, "If so, then it penetrates ancient and modern, encompassing heaven and earth."
The Master said, "Again, it's before the donkey, behind the horse."
The monk said, "What about that which does not fall before the donkey or behind the horse?"
The Master said, "The ancients and moderns cannot encompass it; heaven and earth cannot contain it."
The Master then said, "Good Chan practitioners, originally perfect, originally luminous, existing since ancient times, formless within the great void. The family style beyond the kalpas is simple and plain; the field within the pot is level and even. Gazing, the eye's power nearly breaks; contemplating, the mind's conditions have yet to sprout. Clouds hold the intent of snow, the crane's dream distant; heaven creates autumn's countenance, wild geese fly into the deep. Only in silent self-illumination is it pure and clear. Thought congeals and forms the realm of objects; awareness flows and becomes sentient beings. Emotions, many or few, divide into the six paths; wisdom, great or small, distinguishes the three vehicles. When the realm is true, everywhere one sees the Buddha; when the Way is wondrous, one breaks through dust to reveal the sutras. Like a bright pearl responding to colors, like an empty valley transmitting sound. As for transcending the ordinary and entering the sacred, shifting positions and following conditions—tell me, where is the path? Can you understand?"
After a long pause, he said, "The dawn wind wipes away the dim mist, faintly, a line of blue mountains lies horizontal."

When the sounding block has not yet been struck, in what land do all Buddhas dwell? Before the wheel of opportunity has turned, the One Vehicle lies beyond words. When guest and host merge into one, why should the lay practitioner bow again? When the family tradition is settled, the National Teacher need not call thrice. If you can be like this, within, no effort is required; without, no sharp edges remain. Do you understand? The clay ox that bellows at the moon can enter the sea; The wooden horse that neighs in the wind knows how to roam in spring.
The monk Shanquan Zhi. He received the Dharma transmission and ascended the hall. A monk asked, “I recall a monk once asked Caoshan, ‘What is it like before the sun rises?’ Caoshan replied, ‘Caoshan has also been like this.’ I wonder, what does this mean?”
The master said, “Where wisdom cannot reach, it is difficult to put into words.”
The monk pressed further, “Rolling the silk reel, distant mountains appear faintly; turning the boat’s bow, the ancient shore draws near, intimate and familiar.”
The master said, “What happens when you reach the shore?”
The monk replied, “The sail fills with a clear breeze, the oar pierces through the bright moon.”
The master said, “Again, you are just drifting with the waves.”
The monk asked, “What about after the sun rises?”
Caoshan said, “Still half a month’s journey behind Caoshan.” What does this mean?
The master said, “When clarity first emerges, the path of life and transformation is revealed, and within it, the message is already accomplished.”
The monk said, “The descendants gain strength, yet those within the room do not know.”
The master said, “But how do those within the room draw near?”
The monk replied, “The empty brightness illuminates itself, without effort or exertion of mind.”
The master said, “Still separated by clouds and water.”
The monk asked, “How can one attain perfection?”
The master said, “Only by not clinging to treasures and defenses.”
The master then said, “Traveling ten thousand miles west to sit at Shaolin, the lamps have passed on continuously to this day. Mud oxen fighting in the sea return together; when the jade thread connects, it wondrously meets the needle. The lineage of our ancestors remains unbroken, the earnest, heartfelt mind of the old woman never forgotten. Before the wind, a tune played on a stringless zither—there will be those in the grove who appreciate its sound. But as for the lamps passing on continuously, mind meeting mind, the bloodline unbroken—how does one practice there? Do you understand? The kingfisher overturns the lotus leaves in the rain; the egret breaks through the bamboo grove’s mist.”
That evening, a small gathering was held. A monk asked Jiufeng, “What is it that has been passed down from patriarch to patriarch?” Jiufeng said, “Shakyamuni was stingy, Mahakashyapa was rich.” The monk asked, “What do you mean by ‘Shakyamuni was stingy’?” Jiufeng said, “He had nothing to give to others.” The monk asked, “What do you mean by ‘Mahakashyapa was rich’?” Jiufeng said, “He was like Lord Mengchang of the state.” The monk said, “I still don’t understand—what exactly is this thing that has been passed down?” Jiufeng said, “A hundred-year-old man dividing the lamp at night.”
The master said, “Everyone is complete; each one is perfectly accomplished. Sometimes, when the point is made, it doesn’t reach—I cannot do it for you. Sometimes, when it reaches, the point isn’t made—I cannot obstruct you. O meditators, in clarity, you take your place and shed every trace of attachment; in darkness, you borrow effort and add radiance. Do you understand? The azure dragon sheds its bones as the moon turns through the night; the dark leopard changes its stripes as clouds play with the dawn.”
The master ascended the hall. A monk asked, "What is a person who is going forward?" The master said, "Silent and solitary, leaving no trace."
The monk pressed, "What is a person who is coming back?" The master said, "Bright and clear, full of vitality."
The monk asked further, "What is a person who neither comes nor goes?" The master said, "Only when your tongue is still will you see my nostrils."
The monk said, "Thank you for your answer."
The master then said, "The ancestral teachings through the ages are like lightning striking a dull blade—it cannot be opened. The wisdom of the Buddhas of the three times is like a waterfall pouring into a leaky cup—it can never be filled. Do you know the way to guide others with ease? The days are cold and short—two people sharing one bowl."

The master ascended the platform and said: The Bodhi tree is no tree; the mirror is no stand. Empty, pure, and luminous—it gathers no dust. When it shines, it’s easy to tell snow from powder; When it turns, it’s hard to distinguish ink from soot. The bird returns to the shadowless tree to roost; The flower blooms on the branch that bears no bud. When the moment of meeting wind and cloud arrives, A cold shuttle emerges from hibernation—a single clap of thunder.

The master ascended the hall and said:
Yunmen found peace and ease in body and mind, naturally understanding how to go with the flow. Linji employed flexible and skillful means, able to probe with a shadowy staff and a hidden pole.
Now tell me, what should the disciples of Tiantong do?
Dig the pond without waiting for the moon—once the pond is complete, the moon will come of itself.

On the tenth day of the first month, the master ascended the hall and said: Every year, the day we open the stove is today. The warmth silently connects us, my fellow practitioners. What a pity—Danxia burned the wooden Buddha, Yet it only made the monastery’s abbot lose his eyebrows.
O fellow meditators, The abbot only knew to eat when hungry, But he did not know there were so many things to consider. Danxia only knew to warm himself by the fire when cold, But he too did not know there were so many things to consider.
Now, if someone in our Tiantong lineage Were to act so rashly, so impulsively, He too would be struck on the back. Why is that? When you should cut, but hesitate, You only invite chaos.

The Master ascended the platform and said: "Where a snake cannot burrow through, and a bird cannot fly across— I say: Everyone is right there within it. At the third watch, the bright moon sinks behind the western hills; A sudden gust of pure frost shakes free from the cold tree."
The master ascended the hall. A monk asked, "What is the discourse that surpasses the Buddha and transcends the patriarchs?"
The master said, "When high, respond high; when low, answer low."
The monk pressed, "A flavorless talk blocks people's mouths."
The master replied, "Then why hasn't it blocked yours today?"
The monk said, "You must believe that words fill the world, yet no mouth is at fault."
The master said, "Be careful not to get them stuck between your teeth."
The master then brought up a case: A monk asked Manjushri, "Was Bodhidharma a patriarch or not?"
Manjushri said, "He was not a patriarch."
The monk asked, "Since he wasn't a patriarch, why did he come from the West?"
Manjushri said, "Because you do not recognize the patriarch."
The monk asked, "What about after recognizing him?"
Manjushri said, "Then you will know he is not a patriarch."
The master said, "So, who is the patriarch? The honored position in the family lineage, the root of heaven and earth, the mother of all phenomena. Before the gate of transformation turns its pivot, how do you take a step on the ground of reality? A single path threads through the green mountains; where the moon sets and the cold ape's cry breaks off."

On the day of the Winter Solstice, we gather in the hall. In the realm of illusion, the three times shift anew. Within the solid earth, the first yang energy stirs in secret.
Dwelling yet not dwelling, the wheel of dharma turns in hidden ways. Born yet not born, it transcends all shadowy phenomena with wondrous ease.
Thus, it takes emptiness as its essence, and the myriad phenomena as its function. It responds universally to offerings across the four directions, yet never demands. It gathers all within a single seal, empty yet boundless.
But tell me— what does it mean to be "born yet not born"? How do you grasp this?
Do you understand? If you wish to ask of spring’s arrival, even the plum blossom itself does not know.

The master ascended the hall. A monk asked, "When the hundred bones all crumble and scatter, there is one thing that remains eternally luminous. What is this eternally luminous thing?"
The master said, "Serene, it exists beyond all forms; standing alone, it precedes the ten thousand workings."
The monk said, "If so, then when the house is poor and robbery comes, it cannot be taken away completely."
The master said, "Before the skull, behind the skin bag."
The monk said, "Right at such a time, what is its true face?"
The master said, "A bleary-eyed fellow—what is there to discuss with him?"
The master then said, "The fleshly mass has no master; the empty kalpa has a home. A perfectly pure and lively undertaking; a level and peaceful stretch of life's journey. The moonlit window, the high wind—clouds congeal on the ancient road. The river of stars, waves still—night sails the spiritual raft. O virtuous Chan practitioners! From mind alone the ten thousand dharmas arise; from the transformation Buddha, a thousand blossoms appear. Quickly you must pull back the nose of the fragrant elephant; above all, avoid touching the dead snake head-on."
The master ascended the platform and said: When the conflagration of the kalpa blazes, all things turn to ashes. Yet within the emptiness of the kalpa, there stands the spiritual terrace. Here, beauty and ugliness leave no trace, no stain; For both beauty and ugliness arise from this very source.

The Master ascended the platform and said:
The one nature is clear and complete, the fundamental ground's radiance shines forth. The six senses interpenetrate and function together, the whole body's hands and eyes respond freely. Thus, one can perform the Buddha's work with the ears at the place of the eyes, And with the nose at the place of the ears. Therefore it is said: If a stone man's mind were like yours, even he could sing a rustic tune. If you were like a stone man, even a song of snow would find harmony.
If one can be like this, Then in every speck of dust, all wisdom is accomplished. Do you not see in the teachings it is said: Whether the realm of form is pure, Or the perfection of wisdom is pure, Or the wisdom of all wisdom is pure— There is no duality, no division, No separation, no interruption.
Do you all understand this?
After a long pause, he said: Father and son among cloud-capped mountains know no outside, The friendship of water and moon arises from its own affinity.

The Master ascended the platform and said:
When the mind of clinging and conditions comes together, It's like a puppet show on stage, putting on its tricks. Break through the painted screen and return home— The fields of your native land remain vast and clear.
Sweep away the dust of emotions, Drain dry the waves of consciousness. In empty brightness, wander freely—a single pot of wind and moon. When dreams grow cold and you turn around—a thousand fathoms of snow and cloud.
The master ascended the hall and brought up a case: A monk asked Caoshan, "When the son returns to the father, why does the father pay him no attention?" Caoshan said, "In principle, it should be so." The monk asked, "Then where is the kindness between father and son?" Caoshan said, "Only then is the kindness between father and son fully realized." The monk asked, "What is the kindness between father and son?" Caoshan said, "Not even an axe can split it apart."
The master said, "The bright moon at the crossroads, the green mountains above the rooftops. Stepping back to turn effort around, sharing the same body and the same life. Only when you reach this point will you understand the principle of 'not even an axe can split it apart.' So how do you grasp this? Do you see it yet? When illumination is exhausted, the body has nothing to rely on; the whole being merges with the great Way."

The Master ascended the hall and said: The tongue is a lump of flesh, The lips are two flaps of skin. Between them there is no fixed certainty, Beyond them, do not speculate or doubt.
Zhaozhou, the ancient Buddha, Yunmen, the sagely master— On the loom of their teaching, not a single thread is hung. Naturally, Peach and plum trees form their own paths; Who says the spring wind blows with intention?

The Master ascended the hall and said:
"The depths are unfathomable, the spirit has no root. You may search the mountains to their end, yet find no home. You may drain the waves of consciousness dry, yet find no self. The stone maiden draws open the golden lock, The wooden man stirs the jade wheel. Only then can you truly believe: Born from the Buddha's mouth, Nourished by the Dharma, You gain a share of the Buddha's truth.
Have any of you ever walked this path? Have you ever practiced accordingly?"
After a long silence, he added:
"When the rod is lifted with the hook, The water's surface ripples wide, Scattering the moonlight's glow."

The master ascended the hall. A monk asked, "Jiashan said, 'The ape embraces its child and returns behind the green peaks; the bird drops the flower before the blue cliffs.' Fayan said, 'For thirty years I understood this as words about scenery. If not understood as words about scenery, then what?'"
The master said, "The waning moon sinks through sparse woods; white clouds embrace secluded rocks."
The monk advanced and said, "Going forward, merit is not preserved; turning back, the wondrous is still attained."
The master said, "You stump-rooted fellow, off you go again like this."
The monk advanced and said, "If not going like that, then how?"
The master said, "A stream of spring water flows between the flowers."
The monk advanced and said, "What about Fushan saying, 'The rhinoceros, from gazing at the moon, grows horns with patterns; the elephant, startled by thunder, has flowers enter its tusks'?"
The master said, "You're squeezing juice on a sesame cake again."
The monk bowed.
The master then said, "Willow threads hang golden, orioles' speech is smooth; flower trellises spread brocade, butterflies flurry in flight. Within seeing and hearing, a message is conveyed—who has the master's touchstone to turn iron to gold?"
He then raised his staff and showed it to the assembly, saying, "Do you see?" He tapped it once and said, "Do you hear? Remove the reed head; the weight is evenly divided."

The master ascended the platform and brought up the case of a monk asking Yunmen: "Killing one's father and mother—one repents before the Buddha. Killing the Buddha and killing the patriarchs—where does one repent?"
Yunmen said: "露 (revealed)."
The master remarked: "露—it surpasses the ancestors and transcends the patriarchs. Some say he burns the incense that revives the soul, I say he beats the poison-smeared drum.
Painful, painful! If you still bite on words and chew on phrases, follow rules and tread in measured steps, echo what is chanted above and glance ahead and behind— Zhang San wraps his hat, newly rich with money— a wealthy man does not do it like that."
The master ascended the platform and said: "Use the light of the original source to wash away the long night's darkness. Use the wisdom of the Dharma realm to shatter the doubts of countless kalpas. Birth and death are a chaotic swirl, yet you do not reach the home of true purity. Causes and conditions are a tangled disturbance, yet you do not arrive at the realm of perfect clarity. Let external things change as they will; within me alone is emptiness. Step into the ring of the Way; let the body forget illusory affairs. Therefore, the ancients said: 'There is a thing that precedes heaven and earth, formless, fundamentally serene. It can be the master of all phenomena, yet does not fade with the four seasons.' Now tell me, what is this thing?"
After a long pause, he said: "When the whale swallows the sea dry, the coral branches are revealed."
The master ascended the hall and said:
The nest knows the wind; the cave knows the rain. No need to arrange anything— It naturally forms its own pattern. Clear, without cause; Spacious, without counterpart. How joyful— Forest birds, deep-water fish, With one smile, forgetting you and me.
Now tell me, How do you truly understand this kind of accord?
Do you get it? If you get it, what’s so special? If you don’t, it still allows you.

The Venerable Abbot ascends the platform to give a teaching.
Colorless, yet all colors honor it as foremost. Tasteless, yet all flavors find it supreme. The Way has no root or stem, yet it fills heaven and earth. The Dharma has no fixed form, appearing now here, now there.
The valley is always empty, yet echoes respond to every call. The mirror is naturally clear, yet reflections follow each form accordingly.
When a monk truly realizes this very body and mind, their great function flows freely, unconstrained by any vessel.
O assembly of Chan practitioners, tell me: Who is this one who cannot be contained by any vessel? Can you grasp this?
After a long pause, he said:
"Wondrously transcending the very first thought, Standing alone before the ten thousand phenomena."
The master ascended the hall. A monk asked, "When the eye that grasps heaven and earth is so continuous that not a single hair's breadth is missed, what then?" The master said, "Clear and vast as the whale's sea, cold and piercing as the toad's wheel is narrow." The monk pressed, "The wondrous brightness does not extend its illumination; before patterns and colors are born." The master said, "What then is the eye with which you see through this?" The monk said, "A single star of the rhinoceros horn pierces the toad's shadow; the divine pearl's nine bends are threaded by an ant's silk." The master said, "You must still shift your position to accomplish the work, and study the mutual turning from the side to succeed." The monk said, "Just when the jade maiden beckons, the wonder lies in the return journey." The master said, "At the very moment of returning, what is the wonder?" The monk said, "Everywhere the green willows are fit to tether horses." The master said, "This is the matter of the journey." The monk said, "When not involved in the journey, how can it be used?" The master said, "A straw raincoat and bamboo hat sell for gold; everywhere you meet, yet do not know how to call." The monk bowed.
The master then said, "True emptiness is not empty; wondrous existence is not existent. It is the root from which all phenomena arise, the mother from which the two principles of creation unfold. Directions cannot fix its dwelling; eons cannot exhaust its lifespan. The gate and courtyard are vast and pure—the wind's hue is like autumn. The field of mind is empty and bright—the moon's radiance is like day. To penetrate the single thought before it sprouts is to hold the great work yet not cling to it. At the crossroads, the wooden horse neighs; within the four avenues, the stone ox runs. Everywhere you meet, everywhere is the path; the whole body is eye, the whole body is hand."
The master ascended the platform and raised the case: A monk asked Shoushan, “What is Buddha?” Shoushan said, “The bride rides the donkey, the mother-in-law leads it.” The master said: “A patch-robed monk’s tongue is truly free—in the whole lump, not a hook or awl. Wheelwright Bian’s skill was not passed to his son; Butcher Ding’s blade moved where no whole ox remained.”
The master ascended the platform and said: The body is not a heap of dust—it stands alone, wondrously existing. The mind is not entangled in emotions—it dwells in deep stillness, solitary and learned. Its essence transcends all obstacles; Its function attains great freedom. It neither comes nor goes, Neither manifest nor hidden. It responds to forms and sounds, Yet is free from opposition and dependence. Steamed buns, sesame cakes—all are Guanyin. Now return to me the trade of my own household.

The master ascended the hall and said: "Abundant with ten thousand virtues, yet all phenomenal appearances are but shadows. Swept clean without a speck of dust, firmly grasping silence where words and thoughts vanish. The style of serene stillness naturally illuminates itself; the realm of true constancy is wandered alone. When you pick it up, it's clear and distinct—the thousand differences and myriad distinctions cannot be confused. When you put it down, it's free and unhindered—nowhere to be found throughout the ten directions and three times. Thus the ancients said: 'It won't stay even when you try to catch it; it won't turn back even when you call out to it.' The ancient sages made no arrangements for it, and to this day it has no fixed abode. Now tell me, how should one practice to attain such harmony? Do you understand?"
After a long pause, he said: "Walk until the stream ends; sit and watch the clouds rise."
The master ascended the teaching seat. A monk asked: "The wind through the pines, the flowing streams—these are Guanyin's gateway into truth. Wild grasses and quiet blossoms—these are Samantabhadra's field where inspiration stirs. But what about us monks? What should we do?"
The Master said, "Let go and walk freely on the long road of peace. In every thing and every moment, there is natural ease."
A monk asked, "If so, then the six gates are not closed, and the four crossroads leave no trace?"
The Master replied, "When eyes and ears are not brought along, one can receive and use things as they come."
The monk said, "Guanyin buys a flatbread, but when she lets go, it becomes a steamed bun."
The Master asked, "What about from your own perspective?"
The monk answered, "Let it fill the valleys and ditches, mixing with mud and water."
The Master said, "Confusion and darkness do not know each other."
The Master then said, "All forms do not hinder the eye—this is the gateway of Manjushri, where insight arises. All sounds do not defile the ear—this is the gateway of Guanyin, where clarity penetrates. All actions are not bound by the body, all responses are not opposed by circumstances—this is the gateway of Samantabhadra, where one moves freely. To take away the external world is like a donkey looking into a well; to take away the self is like a well looking at a donkey. The three thousand worlds and a billion bodies—no need to arrange anything, just this is the practice."

Flowers and birds do not come—spring passes in vain. On Ox-Head Mountain, a man of ease and leisure. Since the mind is pure, there is nothing to be done. Lay down all that idle toil and striving.

During the Summer Retreat, the master ascended the hall and said:
"Dwelling without attachment to a dwelling place—who can trace the coming and going? Attaining without attachment to attainment—the distinctions between self and other naturally dissolve. This complete envelopment has no exterior; the entire universe is one temple. All is equal without difference; every living being is your kin. A hundred rivers merge into the sea, becoming one flavor; all phenomena return to their true nature, becoming one family.
Now, what is the meaning of protecting life and refraining from harm? Do you understand? The partial and the complete never depart from their original ground; The unborn does not depend on spoken causes.
---
**Note:** - **結夏** (jié xià) refers to the beginning of the traditional summer monastic retreat (Vassa) - **上堂** (shàng táng) means ascending the hall to give a Dharma talk - **無生** (wú shēng) is a key Chan term meaning 'no arising' or 'the unborn', pointing to the nature of ultimate reality"

The Master entered the hall, raised a case:
Jingqing asked a monk, "What sound is that?"
The monk replied, "It's the sound of raindrops dripping from the eaves."
Jingqing said, "Sentient beings are confused and upside-down, lost in objects and forgetting themselves."
The monk asked, "What about you, Master?"
Jingqing said, "I am precisely not confused about myself."
The monk asked, "What does 'precisely not confused about myself' mean?"
Jingqing said, "Stepping out of the world is still somewhat easy; explaining it directly in reality is truly difficult."
The Master said:
The sound of raindrops from the eaves— It asks you: Are you truly awake? Right now, right here, complete your own work; On the path, become the master.
In every moment, see the Buddha; In every dust, the sutras emerge. Split open Mount Huashan, merging with the sky's color; Release the Yellow River, its roar reaching the sea.
As for Jingqing's words— "Stepping out of the world is still somewhat easy; explaining it directly in reality is truly difficult"— What does that mean? Do you understand?
Before the wind, all the sages can’t fool the eye. There will be one from Caoshan who recognizes Jingqing.

Addressing the assembly, I say: This very tradition is open and radiant on all sides. The handle of the Dipper moves sideways, and the river flows calm; the dream crane takes flight, leaving its nest empty. In practice, one withdraws from effort to settle into position; from that position, one shifts, borrowing effort. In the clear and lucid place, there is difference within sameness; in the serene and still place, there is sameness within difference. Responding to circumstances, the mechanism turns freely; in wondrous response, the pivot point opens, empty yet penetrating. Thus it is said: When the child of Buddha abides here, that itself is the Buddha’s enjoyment—walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, always dwelling within it. Good practitioners, tell me: What is this matter within it? After a long silence: For ten thousand years, reflected in the clear deep pool is a moon in the empty sky; only after many attempts to fetch it will you come to know it at last.

A monk asked the Master during a sermon: “When a pearl emits light, yet the light shines back upon itself, what is this like?”
The Master said: “A coral branch, and the moon at midnight.”
The monk said: “In that case, it is empty yet aware, void yet wondrous.”
The Master said: “Elder, have you drained the skull dry?”
The monk said: “But what can I do? My sincere heart is in pieces.”
The Master said: “Tell me, what kind of person existed before the very beginning?”
The monk said: “A blind Zhang, a dark Li.”
The Master said: “Exactly—you haven’t drained it dry yet.”
The monk said: “How can I reach the ultimate?”
The Master said: “Don’t force a name.”
The Master then addressed the assembly: “When the mind is pure and unstained—like the clear sky without clouds, or autumn waters without wind—uphold clarity and purity, like a jade vase without dust, or an ice mirror without stain. Even when you reach such a state, you must still borrow light to function, borrow a path to pass through. Unite your mind with space, harmonize your use with the myriad forms. In noisy places, ride the ox backward; in chaotic times, wear your socks inside out. All of you—how do you grasp this? Every move, every turn is wondrous. This person has come from beyond the ordinary.”

A teaching from the Master:
When Master Luzu saw a monk approaching, he would always turn to face the wall. Master Nanquan said, "I usually tell people, 'Take it up before the empty eon, embody it before the Buddha came into the world.' But still, I haven't found a single person who gets it. For someone like you, it'll be donkey years before you understand."
The Master commented: "Luzu's teaching gave rise to trickery; Nanquan's command spawned deception. Tiantong is not here to nitpick the ancients, but to make you all understand yourselves. Do you get it?
'He who plays with the fishing rod at the tip of the pole Is different—clean waves untouched, his mind his own.'"

Even if you possess great spiritual powers and can receive great benefits, you still haven't aligned with that person. Tell me: who is the one who does not rely on any mental objects or circumstances?" After a long pause, he said: "Where words and silence cannot reach—there, the past and present are endless."

"Within the honored seat of the ninefold majesty, Stars in brilliant patterns circle the North Star. The four seasons' work adjusts the jade candle of harmony, Through countless ages, the family tradition turns the golden wheel. He distinguishes all beings, spreading pure transformation; He embraces heaven and earth, holding profound benevolence. The teacher addressed the assembly, saying:
"When people are at peace, there are no words. When water is level, there is no flow. When the wind settles, the flowers fall. When birds cry, the mountain becomes more still.
In this natural state, nothing is lacking, and nothing remains. Do not add even a single thread of intention to it."

A monk asked during a formal assembly: "If the principle of empty clarity ultimately has no body, what then?" The master said: "Before any trace of pattern appears, when the message is hard to convey." The monk continued: "When one step shifts secretly and the mysterious path turns, the whole body lets go and the kalpa pot is empty." The master said: "When birth meets the father, the whole merges without remaining illumination." The monk pressed: "Since the principle is thus, what about the practical side?" The master said: "Clearly returning, the work of manifestation begins; how could the ten directions' responses be hindered?" The monk said: "In every atom, the original body appears." The master said: "Penetrating all forms, transcending all mind." The monk asked: "What about embodying both principle and phenomena?" The master said: "If you meet a dead snake on the road, don't kill it; carry it home in a bottomless basket." The monk said: "Entering the market, I can whistle long; returning home, I wear a short shirt." The master said: "The wooden man sings on the mountain ridge; the stone woman dances by the stream." The monk bowed.
The master then said: "Pure illumination is spirit; it clearly sees the original nature. Empty penetration is wonder; it constantly perceives the self-existing body. Standing alone without support, numinous and free from dependence, it lasts endlessly—hence the name 'Measureless Life.' Abiding thus persistently, it is called the 'Immovable One.' Neither existent nor non-existent, neither aging nor dying, it shines like a golden wave breaking the night, clear as a jade well holding autumn. Only realization can attest to it; words cannot reach it. So what is the moment of true realization? After a pause, he said: "Do you fully understand? The snow deeply covers the path of ten-thousand-year pines; a range of peaks is further veiled by clouds."

[The Master entered the hall and raised a case:] A monk asked Jianshan, "What is the Buddha?" Jianshan said, "This position has no host or guest." The monk asked, "Then with whom do you usually converse?" Jianshan said, "Manjushri has gone with me to fetch water; Samantabhadra has not yet returned from picking flowers."
[The Master then] said: Not clinging to merit, not keeping company— Just pass completely through it once. Awaken: a boat drifts on moonlit waves; Eyes cold: snow piles on reedy shores.

For the Heavenly Longevity Festival's concluding ceremony, the master ascended the hall and said:
"The vast sky covers all—the ultimate transformation is effortless and unforced. The subtle and enduring presence—the radiant holy spirit transcends thought. It expands across the entire universe, bringing peace to every land. It extends for countless years, elevating the realm of longevity. Dwelling in a position of supreme honor, borrowing the conditions of birth, moving like a sharp blade, responding to circumstances, ruling with effortless grace—do you understand how this person experiences such blessings?
The sage's benevolence and filial piety spread pure virtue; may the earth endure and the heavens last forever, as we look up to the holy brilliance."

Master Yangshan sent a Dharma kinship letter to his junior Dharma brothers. He addressed the assembly, saying:
"The Patriarch's blossom spreads five petals from the spiritual root— Only those who truly know grace can repay it. The Great Yang Mountain never forgot the assembly at Dongsi, And Xuansha continued the legacy of Xuefeng. Where the shuttle of mind is passed, the path is hard to travel, But when needle and mustard meet, there is a subtle gate. The nostrils radiate light, the breath comes swiftly— A single cut in those days removed all traces of mud.
But consider: When teacher and student are perfectly aligned, and the bloodline of the mind flows freely—at such a time, in such a place, what is this matter transmitted from hand to heart? How do we truly comprehend it?"
After a long pause, he said:
"To be free, you must see the position beyond attainment. To reach wondrous perfection, you must return to the home before form arises."

Teaching Assembly:
A monk asked Zhaozhou, "All things return to the One. Where does the One return?"
Zhaozhou said, "I was in Qingzhou and made a linen shirt that weighs seven catties."
Another monk asked Manjushri, "All things return to the One. Where does the One return?"
Manjushri said, "The Yellow River has nine bends."
The Master said: "The Yellow River's nine bends, the seven-catty linen shirt— A Tartar horse neighs to the north, a Yue bird nests to the south. A patch-robed monk arrives precisely at the place of true constancy. His words don't deceive, his face knows no shame."

The Master took the high seat. A monk asked: "When the void yet ever radiant, the original light shines of itself, what then?"
The Master said: "The subtle function stirs not, yet it is marvelously bright. In this very place, you fully perceive what lies before the first sign."
The monk pressed: "Heads crowned with the midnight moon, feet treading on golden ground."
The Master said: "At such a time, how do you turn and shift?"
The monk said: "A jade person breaks the dream—a rooster cries. In an instant, life's scenes all line up perfectly."
The Master said: "You only know how to come this way; you do not know how to go this way."
The monk asked: "What about going this way?"
The Master said: "You too must pierce and probe deeply into this very place."
Then the Master addressed the assembly: "The four elements are free of dust; pure and original essence is inherently complete. The six senses have no companion; vast and luminous awareness roams spiritually. Like a swift wind traveling through space, like an empty boat riding the waves—in the waves, there is originally no avoiding or seeking; in me, there is marvelously no welcoming or sending away. Therefore it is said: 'The sage empties his heart, yet the myriad things are nothing but his creation.' To recognize all things as oneself—is that not the sage alone? But when faced with the towering, the rugged, the open, and the clear—how can you realize them as yourself? Can you still discern it? 'A mind that fills the ten directions dwells in no place at all.'"
The teacher addressed the assembly, saying:
Truly understanding means realizing the ultimate emptiness, clearly seeing your own nature. Not falling into concepts of existence or non-existence, you transcend birth and death. Like a night boat carrying moonlight, casting a line into the vast blue—this is how a pure legacy is passed down, no more than this.
On the Summer Liberation Day, the Master ascended the hall and said: Take the Dharma as your boundary, and you can see through everything without limits. Take wisdom as your body, and you can harmonize all things, forgetting self and other.
When roots have grown beneath your cushion, and you have exhausted even the slightest thread of attachment, then dwell in no-dwelling mind. When clouds arise at the tip of your staff, and you travel throughout the four continents, then act in non-action form.
One who moves like clouds or a crane—that person must know that there is a self, so that in serving he may be honored. One who sits in stillness and wears the robe—that person must recognize the true source, so that in the host he may see the function.
Thus the ancients said: “Borrowing function clarifies the position—the function lies within the substance. Borrowing position clarifies the function—the substance lies within the function.”
A monk who can do this has body and mind fully liberated, and is free from both movement and stillness. Cloud and water are the venerable ones; the venerable ones are cloud and water.
Have any of you ever practiced like this? A goose drinking water can taste the pure flavor. A bee gathering honey does not harm the remaining fragrance.

A Dharma talk in the hall. A monk asked Yunmen: "In early autumn, after the summer retreat, if someone suddenly asks a question, how should one respond?" Yunmen said: "The assembly, step back."
The Master said: "The assembly steps back—this marvelously transcends all patterns and conventions. No need for deliberate arrangement; why force it into fixed categories? When the strings are plucked in a new tune, who truly knows the melody? Only when the other opens their mouth can their heart and guts be revealed.
Practice communities must not recklessly debate this. Even the Buddhas of the three times do not know it."

On the Mid-Autumn Festival, the master addressed the assembly:
This is a realm of pure clarity—a pot of refreshing energy that holds the essence of autumn. The mind and body become clear and bright, like the hazy face of the moon cradled in the midnight mist. It is naturally alive, vast and always empty. Cut off the conditions of birth and death; step beyond the judgments of existence and non-existence.
Can each of you arrive at this state? Can you walk and dwell in it?
After a long pause, the master said:
When all the laurel is cut from the moon, the pure light should shine even more.

During the Tianning Festival, the master ascended the hall and said:
"The lord of lords is the heaven within heavens, A family's golden wheel passes through ten thousand generations. Stepping back, one does not dwell in the honored seat; Borrowing effort, one becomes the cause for birth. The vast seal of emptiness has no flaw or stain; Clear awareness contains its own turning points. Kalpas cannot measure one's lifespan; Still existence beyond forms radiates endlessly.
O venerable practitioners of Chan, can you see the path within this? After a long pause, he said: 'Uniquely rooted in the pivot of the Way, one becomes father and ancestor; The world is entrusted to children and grandchildren to uphold.'"

Minister Fan went into the mountains and requested an address from the master. He offered the following story: Minister Pei once visited Chan Master Huangbo. Pointing to a painted mural, Pei asked, "The portrait is here. Where is the honored monk?" Huangbo called out loudly, "Minister Pei!" Pei responded, "Yes?" Huangbo said, "What is it?" In that moment, Pei had a breakthrough. The master then said, "Tell me: What exactly did Minister Pei understand?" After a long pause, he continued, "Don't blame me for repeatedly urging you to drink—since we parted, I seldom see you anymore."

The master addressed the assembly, saying: Attachment forms the body; conceptual thinking shapes the world. From this, beings drift through the ocean of birth and death. Only when the clear source of pure awareness is fully illuminated—undisturbed and transparent—does one realize that illusions and bubbles are equally unobstructed. The six sense doors exude an autumnal stillness; the four elements meet their natural decay. Yet the one true essence remains ever-present and free. Beneath the mingling moonlight, the snowy reeds blur the vision; With the gentle escort of the clear breeze, the night boat swiftly returns home.
The teacher ascended the hall and said: "Hide a mountain in a marsh, hide a boat in a valley— yet the One Truth cannot be hidden. It fills the vast emptiness—can you bear it? The family lineage is pure and clear, with its own tradition, Round and whole, without edges or corners."

The teacher entered the hall and raised a case:
A monk asked Xiangyan, "What is the Way?"
Xiangyan replied, "A dragon's roar within a dead tree."
The monk then asked, "What is the person of the Way?"
Xiangyan replied, "Eyes within a skull."
The teacher said, "If you can go in such a way, then words cannot reach it, and thinking cannot grasp it. But tell me: how must we conduct ourselves to accord with it? Do you understand?
The wind brushes through sand and reeds, snow covers them; a boat lies sideways at a wild ferry, water holds the autumn."

The Master addressed the assembly:
"When the north wind blows, autumn has passed. In the chilly season, it's time to sit by the fire. In silent reverence, we wander beyond the world. At leisure, we sit in the hall like withered trees. When the eons of dust are empty, we find our home. Where the Way revolves in emptiness, there's no self. Luminous and never dim, quiet yet knowing – this is the robe and bowl passed from Shaolin to Huike.
Monks in meditation, this is the moment when Bodhidharma passed on the teaching to the Second Patriarch. Now tell me: does Tiantong have something to pass on, or nothing?"
After a long pause, he said:
"People pity the poor man who has nothing left but bones. I say: when the mechanisms are sparse, one doesn't spare the eyebrows."
The master ascended the hall and said:
"A single point of spiritual light is never concealed; It is like an old oyster swallowing moonlight in the night. At that moment, when the inner mechanism turns, Essence and function are ever unobstructed."
A monk asked: "What is it to illuminate the position by borrowing the function, where function resides in essence?"
The master replied: "When light is in essence, it is ever bright and clear; When essence contains light, it becomes subtly alive."
The monk asked further: "What is it to illuminate the function by borrowing the position, where essence resides in function?"
The master replied: "Amid chaos and disturbance, it is ever quiet; In the midst of clamor and noise, it remains completely at ease."
The monk then said: "The moonlit night shines with radiance over the ancient ferry; No rain falls from the white clouds wrapping the autumn hills."
The master replied: "That is like someone from Handan trying to imitate the way people walk in the Tang capital."
The master continued: "The green mountains need no white clouds to pay homage; The white clouds need no green mountains to manage them. Clouds always abide in mountains, mountains abide in clouds; The mountains are naturally at peace, the clouds naturally unhurried.
Monastics, if you can realize it in this way, you will understand: To illuminate the position by borrowing the function: function resides in essence. To illuminate the function by borrowing the position: essence resides in function. When essence and function are without partiality, only then can one sing the path.
Tell me, what is the moment when essence and function are without partiality?
Water flows green as it passes by bamboo; The wind carries fragrance as it comes through flowers."

The Master addressed the assembly, saying:
"Elegant patterns fill the void, bearing the seal of the Buddhas and Patriarchs to transmit the tradition. Brilliant light dispels darkness, continuing the lamp that illuminates the world for gods and humans. In that moment when thought is surpassed, the underlying truth can yet turn with grace. Hence, the Master Chuizi said: 'Where the body hides, no trace is left; where no trace is left, the body must not hide.'
I spent thirty years at Medicine Mountain, only to understand this matter. You practitioners of Chan—tell me, what exactly is the matter understood? Are you all fully aware of it?"
After a long pause, he continued: "The great turtle returns to the undersea palace as evening tides recede; the hare crosses the galaxy, and the night sky's light becomes pure."
The teacher addressed the assembly, saying:
"Departing is like arriving once more— The bright moon and reeds keep the night from confusion. Turning the oar, where does one go again? In autumn's glow, the eye traces the vast sky meeting the low water."

The Master ascended the hall and raised a case: A monk asked Zhaozhou, "The supreme Way is not difficult—it only rejects picking and choosing. Is this the nest of our current era?" Zhaozhou said, "Someone once asked me this, and for five years I couldn't untangle it clearly."
The Master said, "Tell me: Did Zhaozhou answer the question, or did he not? Those with clear eyes can see right through his bones. Tiantong couldn't help but add a footnote:
'For five years I couldn't untangle it clearly— One phrase originally had no seams or gaps. He only pretended to pass it off as a discussion— Who believes the price was clearly set? The sharp-witted understand each other, The clueless are baffled. Better to quarrel with an understanding person Than to talk with someone who doesn't get it.'"

The master took the seat and said:
"The essence is empty yet possesses awareness—like a mirror that remains bright without reflecting any image. Its function is subtle and effortless—like a pearl that spins on its own when placed on a tray. Conditions cannot entangle it; birth and death cannot change it. Therefore it is said: 'In brightness there is darkness, but do not seek it through darkness. In darkness there is brightness, but do not oppose it with brightness.' Consider it like steps forward and backward—how can we become fully in tune with this?"
After a long pause, he said:
"Alone beyond the world, riding a thousand-mile elephant, striking a golden bell under a ten-thousand-year-old pine."

[A solemn assembly in the hall.] A frost clears—thousand peaks wear a cold hue. Within this, who is the one turning and watching? The family style is inherited, yet inheritance is no merit; A sudden pat on the back startles the child who has shed the white. Thus, Nine Peaks said: "Inheritance is merit, but once inherited, it is no longer merit." Now tell me: How should one actually walk this path? [After a long pause] Coarse discernment of the fine is still knowable, But the subtle within the subtle—what could be rarer?

A monk asked the master in the hall: "When clouds disperse and mountains grow cold, when all works and merits are exhausted, when the pool is empty and the moon has vanished, and the honored one is hard to glimpse—at this very moment, how should one conduct oneself?"
The master said: "Illumination is exhausted, and the essence is without support; the entire body merges with the Great Way."
The monk said: "Cut off the path of the tongue, and do not fall into the gates of dualistic or non-dualistic thought."
The master replied: "The single phrase before words is utterly clear and distinct."
The monk said: "The precious seal faces the wind, wondrously; layer upon layer, the brocade seams open."
The master asked: "When the partial and the full are not yet distinguished, how do you discern?"
The monk answered: "Emptiness does not lose its illumination; illumination does not lose its emptiness."
The master said: "This is still within the interplay of partial and full. What about when you do not touch on partial or full?"
The monk remained silent.
The master said: "Outside the door, clouds arise on a broken path; inside the seat, there is no illumination, surpassing even the lamp."
The master then addressed the assembly: "Emptiness beyond emptiness—utterly devoid of traces—yet not a single point is dark. Still and silent, beyond words—yet a single pivot turns of itself. When it comes to such a moment, Śākyamuni and Maitreya do not dare to call themselves masters; when it reaches such a place, Bodhidharma, the old foreigner, does not dare to call himself an ancestor. All you Chan practitioners, do you understand? The golden needle—paired locks, perfectly prepared; the hidden path—encompassing all."
The Master ascended the hall and raised a case: A monk asked Shishuang, "What is the Master’s most profound point?" Shishuang replied, "A lock without a key, rattling at both ends." The Master said, "The one who goes first does not arrive, the one who comes last overshoots. Within this move, do you see? As soon as black and white are distinguished, life and death are set in motion. It burdens the woodcutter, ruining his axe handle."

For the Winter Solstice, the assembly is addressed:
Before the sign appears, the original essence is already clear. After all traces vanish, we return to the ancestral source. Within the reed-organ, the energy of the season flows silently; inside the pivot, the wheel of the mechanism turns unseen. It subtly arises from the depths of the ninefold abyss, and grace flows forth as the beginning of all transformations.
The family letter has been sent. Now you will see the returning geese tracing their characters across the vast sky. The cave clouds will turn to rain, and you will know that even withered trees can give rise to the dragon’s roar. Let the scenes shift and change as they may—they do not hinder the enlightened person’s way of life.
All you Chan practitioners, do you understand this yet?
The single energy, without speaking, contains all forms. Where can the ten thousand beings find words to thank this impartial gift?

The senior monk was invited to take the seat and address the assembly:
Ice forms on open waters, solemnly heralding the north wind's might. Snow breaks through plum blossoms on the creek, leaking the east wind's message. When held still, even Śūnyatā's skin would shiver in the bitter cold. When set free, even a Ganges maiden could smell the fragrance and taste the flavor.
There’s no need for rulers or knives to create order, No need for salt or plum to blend harmony. Body and mind perfectly align, equaling the capacity to perceive all things. Methods and means possess the power to unite with what is present.
At just this moment, responding to just these conditions, Who can truly understand such matters? Do you fully comprehend?
See how warmth returns so swiftly— Spring dwells on the highest branch of the grove.
The teacher ascended the hall and said:
Wisdom is empty yet clear. The spirit is still yet pervasive. The cold rain clears into the night, The frosty moon moves across the sky. A monk’s practice should be like this— Transparent and open in every direction.
Reflect on this.
Teaching Assembly:
A monk asked Zhaozhou, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" Zhaozhou said, "At year's end, no paper money is burned." The master said:
Today, Tiantong cannot spare you from analyzing this. An old, venerable master— His words had no fixed records. But then he said, "At year's end, no paper money burning"— What is there to seek in the Patriarch's coming from the West?
Polish it, and it has no flaw; Chew on it, and it has no flavor. Looking at it coldly, his tricks are lacking— Zhaozhou, the ancient Buddha, is somewhat better.
What is it that makes Zhaozhou better? Have you not heard it said: "Don't study meditation, don't discuss doctrine, Spread a worn-out mat and sleep in the sun."
Imagine even the highest Tusita Heaven Has nothing to compare to a day of sun on your back.
If someone suddenly came and said, "Can I sleep like that too?" Just say to them, "I'm afraid you haven't even yet dreamed of it."

New Year's Day Discourse
The sky spreads clear and vast, the earth receives moisture's blessing. Gentle rain helps wash away the old, and righteous winds lend their breath. The wheel of potential turns, subtly activating the primal axis; the tuned pipes produce elegant new melodies. Cold cliffs regain warmth, withered trees revive. Everywhere people tread upon spring, each person receiving a new year. Yet for a monk, from the start, there is fundamentally nothing born. Before the old rustic's hall, why need formal congratulations? How is this so? Because heaven and earth unite in the Way, unobstructed through all; grasses and trees will surely bloom again, each in its appointed time.

The master took the high seat. A monk asked: "One awakens to the Way through sound, and sees the mind through form. For those who already know this, how is such a message conveyed?"
The master replied: "Without carrying along the baggage of sense faculties and their objects, one can use it in everyday life."
The monk said: "The eyes are full of it, the ears are full of it. Not a hair's breadth, not a speck remains."
The master said: "Then how do you break through it?"
The monk said: "The frosty bell sends off the setting moon; the dawn horn drops plum blossoms."
The master said: "There you go, following sounds and forms again."
The monk said: "What about when one doesn't follow sounds and forms?"
The master said: "The bell rings, the horn sounds."
The monk said: "Thank you, Master, for this guidance."

The Master said: *Snow dazzles the eyes, veiling sight—* *Yet pure, one faces the cold hues of a thousand peaks.* *Entering the forest, the message of blossoms* *Silently conveys a single touch of spring's grace.*
*All things sprout and stir;* *True essence revolves and turns.* *What trouble is there in being born, yet not born?* *What effort in acting, yet not acting?* *It cannot be confined by motion or stillness,* *Nor fixed by rank or place.*
*Thus it is said:* *"Only the one solid, secret body* *Appears within all dust."*
*It appears as the body of empty space—vast, unimpeded.* *It appears as the body of lands—intimate everywhere.* *It appears as the body of beings—minds following worldly ways.* *It appears as the body of Buddhas—thoughts realizing truth moment by moment.*
*Gain the total retention that turns in all places;* *Perfect the perfection of knowledge in all seeds.*
*O worthy meditators,* *This is the truly free person—* *The matter of how they receive and use things:* *Do you fully understand it?*
*The power of transformation subtly lies in the hand of the Eastern Lord.* *Under the moonlight, hidden, the jade ruler and golden scissors quietly cut and shape.*

In the hall, I teach only one true mind.
When the three conditions are severed, who rises or sinks?
Thus arise the ten dharma realms.
The six paths of rebirth are self-made obstacles.
If you see not a single dharma, that is the Tathagata.
Only then can you be called Guanyin, the One Who Observes Freedom.
See the strange and not be startled—the strangeness naturally dissolves.
Where does the spirit come from? Where do the sages dwell?
When the staff strikes, the stove collapses and shatters.
A single vast clarity, cutting through inside and out.

The master ascended the hall and brought up a case: A monastic asked Master Muzhou, “What about bowing high to Shakyamuni but not paying homage to Maitreya?”
Muzhou said, “Yesterday someone asked the same question. I chased him out.”
The monastic said, “Perhaps you, Master, think I’m not being genuine.”
Muzhou said, “My staff isn’t here—but I’ll give you thirty blows with the broom handle instead.”
The master commented: “Excellent, assembly! To drive away the plowman’s ox, to snatch the starving person’s food—that is the method of a true master. Tiantong can’t help but offer praise from afar:
> The awe-inspiring general’s command has already been issued. > The eight wilds and four seas require clearing. > Lifting the sword’s energy that pierces the Dipper and Ox constellations, > Sweeping away dust and haze to behold peace.”
The spring rain washes the garden, A spring breeze stirs the bamboo blinds. People from a hundred cities have returned; With a snap of the fingers, the pavilion opens. Entering the gate, one finds it all a Buddhist breeze, A net of Indra’s jewels, shining light reflecting brilliantly.

In the hall, the thirty-six elements are simultaneously empty. Emptiness, emptiness—in that very place, light shines through. Turning sideways, the final mountain hides its peak— neither male nor female in form is the true master.
The true master, with borrowed companions comes, its function inexhaustible. On every blade of grass, the elder Jùzhī— every atom, every realm is home.
Now, as for emerging from and sinking into the source, coming and going along the path— how do you fully comprehend this? Do you understand?
Beyond forms, alone, riding the thousand-mile elephant— beneath the ancient pine, strike the golden bell. Let us go for tea.

Wearing out straw sandals, walking barefoot. What’s directly accomplished cannot be twisted or avoided. No twisting, no avoiding: The Great Dragon is not fooled by Mystic Sands. Up ahead in the tiger skin, the pattern is unmistakable.

Venerable Yanshou addressed the assembly: "When minds truly connect, like leaves on a shared branch, your own radiant clarity remains uncovered. Every realm, every atom speaks the same truth—unfolding like a vast, eloquent tongue. Good assembly, how can you be present where this truth is spoken everywhere? Do you fully grasp it? Water flows green by the bamboo grove; Wind carries fragrance from within the flowers."

A monk asked, "It's like a guest on the vast ocean, dreaming they're rowing an orchid boat—freely drifting across moonlit isles and misty waves. When they're right in that state, is that the ultimate destination?"
The master said, "Faintly, it still carries an effort; vaguely, it's still falling into form."
The monk said, "Last night the bright moon shone upon a thousand peaks—the peaks themselves were vast and never revealed."
The master said, "Turn around and look toward your home; before you, white clouds still cover it."
The monk said, "This is still just the phase of shining back. How does one arrive so stably, so directly?"
The master said, "A jade horse travels through snow at midnight; an antelope hangs by its horns, the moon sinking in the west."
The monk said, "This could be called 'effortless effort'—turning back to merge with the original source."
The master said, "When you are merging with the source, is there still any trace of news?"
The monk said, "The ancient ford's wind is clear, the night cold—in that moment, deep and unable to grasp the wonder."
The master said, "Tear off the jeweled crown, shed all noble stains."
The master then said: "Release the binding entanglements, and the white ox walks steadily. Before reaching the loom of activity, the jade maiden rests idly. Her cool, detached bearing is like clouds on evening mountains; her clear, still capacity, like the moon in an autumn pond. If you can go in this way, you will know that silence holds flavor, and that illumination holds spirit. This is what all Buddhas have transmitted, what all practitioners truly attain. So it is said: 'It's like a guest on the vast ocean, dreaming they're rowing an orchid boat—freely drifting across moonlit isles and misty waves.' O Chan practitioners, is this not your original ground? Now, how will you walk upon it?"
After a long pause, he said: "The ice pitcher has no bottom for the visitor; it clears the bowels, and the bones and hair feel refreshed."

In this assembly, the vastness is beyond grasp. Profound yet present, its wonder cannot be named. Luminous and self-illuminating, Shakyamuni thus closed his door, Vimalakirti therefore refrained from speech. Bodhidharma spent nine years making one statement. My friends, can you truly comprehend this? At midnight, the wooden boy knocks on the moonlit door; at dawn, the jade phoenix smiles upon the blossoms.

The master entered the hall and said:
One day, Changsha was reciting the Great Buddha Name Sutra when a scholar asked him, "I see the names of countless Buddhas, but I don't know which lands they dwell in."
Changsha replied, "After Cui Hao wrote his poem at the Yellow Crane Tower, did you ever write one there?"
The scholar said, "No, I haven't."
Changsha said, "There's no harm in writing one when you have nothing to do."
The master commented: "When he said 'write one when you have nothing to do'—I won't fall behind others. A little flashy, a little boastful, thinking big. Rich and full-bodied, like fine white wine. Even when drunk, they still say their lips haven't touched it. When asked about it, they strike out with their hand.
Don't strike out. Three years have an intercalary month. After winter comes the ninth day of the ninth month."

The Zen Master said to the Kitchen Steward:
A light snow falls, washing the clearing sky clean— The new spring slowly creeps across last year's scorched land. In the three thousand worlds, everything appears as itself alone. With billions of manifestations, there is a wondrous gate.
White clouds are a function of the green mountains; Green mountains are the root from which clouds arise. So I say to the clouds: Turn back toward your source now— Else the mountains will grow thin and sharp with longing.

A clear day after the rain, Sky covers, earth supports, all things are born. Peach blossoms washed clean shimmer like brocade, Willow branches dance light in the breeze. Gurgling mountain springs send forth their sound, Birds in the forest sing in harmony. In every sight and sound, true wonder appears— Where else could anything be unclear?

Teaching assembly:
Clouds part—green mountains stretch beyond the eaves. Rain stops—flowing water rises at the doorstep. Homage, Guanyin, in every home! Before you can avoid it, noses touch. But it's not just noses touching— It's seeing together, hearing together, smelling together, tasting together, body together, mind together, attainment together, wisdom together.
How do you make sense of this, everyone? As it's said: "When fulfillment is complete, the bodhi tree is perfect. When flowers bloom, a whole world begins."
Teaching Assembly. Good people of Zen virtue: When Lingyun saw the peach blossoms and awakened to the Way, it was precisely this very moment. Each of you here is a person of true spirit. Do you have the eyes to see through things? Do you have the mind to understand? If not yet, then Tiantong will add some footnotes for you.
As for Lingyun, he could recognize the peach blossoms. But these old eyes of mine now see things plainly. Sure, I can pick up the mountain right in front of me, but the path to the gate runs straight, never crooked.

A single thought merges with emptiness; the ten directions are reached to their fullest. All existence naturally balances, not a single speck of dust remains. When principle, wisdom, and mind dissolve into one, you’ve arrived home. The mouths of Buddhas and patriarchs fall idle, hanging on the wall. The true realm is vast and silent; the living function is clear and distinct. Like an ice mirror without flaw, like a jade vase without crack. The wind polishes the clear sky; it becomes a stretch of cold blue. Water reflects the moon’s glow; it becomes utterly radiant. The depths of arising and vanishing, the pivot points of success and failure—where do they originate? At what moment do they turn? When the field sprouts, warmth returns; when the garden blooms with splendor, spring enters. Without form, without partiality, without a single place—open the door, and see Maitreya.

The community offered milk porridge as an offering during the Dharma talk. Long ago, through milk porridge, the Good Birth attained awakening— his heart opened, realizing the Way upon seeing the morning star. Now, each of you may follow this same path, yet you're still half a month behind Shakyamuni.
Meditators: Could it be that the eighth day of the lunar month marks a difference? Or that the former Buddha and the latter Buddha differ? Or that the holy differ from the ordinary? If you are a true practitioner, you transcend before and after, cut off past and future, merge the holy and ordinary, unify difference and sameness. You must go exactly like this—do you understand?
Now, to awaken upon seeing the morning star is precisely where the Tathagata drank his porridge.

The Master ascended the hall and said:
In the Diamond Sutra, it is taught: "This Dharma is equal, with no high or low. This is called Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi."
The Master continued: "The high is high, the low is low. The great is great, the small is small. The blue is blue, the yellow is yellow. The square is square, the round is round. So how can we speak of a principle where 'this Dharma is equal'? In all your moments, how do you carry yourselves so that you truly experience no high or low? If you cannot yet do this, then I will press you further:
When people are peaceful, they don't argue; When water is level, it doesn't flow. The great elephant of Jiazhou, the iron ox of Shanfu— Do not blame the Fusang tree for being the first to be illuminated; Most of them dwell at the gate of the sea.

In the hall of shadows, the ancestral mirror reflects all: when the mind arises, all dharmas arise; when you step into the sacred space, when the mind ceases, all dharmas cease. Like stars shining brightly on a clear night, like flowers blooming gracefully in spring — the wooden man subtly operates the machinery of transformation, never missing a beat; the stone woman fully lifts the seal of emptiness, yet its pattern is not yet revealed. Therefore it is said: not one, not different; no coming, no going.
Fellow Chan practitioners, how must you conduct yourselves to truly align with this? The six miraculous powers are present, yet empty — not truly empty. The single perfect radiance is form, yet not form.
The master ascended the hall. A monk asked, "I recall that a monk once asked Zhaozhou, 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' Zhaozhou replied, 'The cypress tree in the front courtyard.' I don't understand—what does this mean?"
The master said, "Speak right away without deliberation."
The monk said, "If it's said that he spoke at that time, it's a pity to betray Zhaozhou's intention."
The master said, "Are you waiting to let the iron beak vent his anger?"
The monk said, "Right now, what is lacking?"
The master said, "You've missed the point entirely."
The monk said, "Master, please tell me—where is Zhaozhou at this very moment?"
The master said, "Who are you asking?"
The monk bowed.
The master then said, "The wind doesn't rustle the branches, the rain doesn't break the clods. Do you understand or not? If so, trust and accept. Vast and open, the great expanse has no boundaries. Stumbling and hobbling, great effort is not controlled. Steady and dense, the mind is as calm as the ocean."

The teacher ascended the hall and said:
"Magnificent, majestic— revealed alone among all phenomena. Clear, distinct— encountering at the tip of every blade of grass.
I see nothing outside myself in others. They see nothing outside themselves in me.
If they are not separate from me, the objects of sight and sound dissolve. If I am not separate from them, perception and thought are released.
Therefore it is said: The very world is you. Every being is you. Every particle is you. Every thought is you.
Tell me— how should you conduct yourself to truly live in accord with this?
Do you understand?
One subtle functioning moves the pivot of the Way in stillness. Ten thousand reflections flow—the mind's mirror is empty."
The Master entered the hall and raised a case: A monk asked Caoshan, "What about when the spiritual robe is no longer worn?" Caoshan said, "Caoshan's mourning period is over today." The Master said, "For a monk's practice, once all traces of achievement are shed and all emotional measures are transcended, only then is there a time to find your own way. Yet I can't help but point to it directly: In the secret place of achievement, turning is difficult. After turning, the family style feels more open. The dim old mountains, green at the edges of the eyes. The melting frost and snow wash the cold off the rush cape."

The teacher ascended the hall and said:
Words, when free from conceptual thought, are always wondrous. Sit still, and your tongue is at rest. Shed the shell of form to be uniquely aware—then you’ve truly grasped your nose.
Thus it is said: Before the empty kalpa, before the sound of awe-inspiring silence, there exists another realm—a gourd beyond the sky. Watch the royal hunt from a tower; it is not the same as cutting reeds in a field.
At this very moment, the wondrous does not touch conditions, nor does form enter the world. Tell me: In such a state, by whom can all this be discerned? Can you fully comprehend this?
—Wearing the midnight moon on your head, treading on the golden earth beneath your feet.

At the hall, it is said: One mind is the myriad phenomena; the myriad phenomena are one mind. It is neither near nor far, neither exceedingly shallow nor profoundly deep. It shares the covering and supporting with heaven and earth, and shines with the sun and moon. The moon is in the boat, and every boat has the moon; gold becomes vessels, and every vessel is made of gold. It is as bright and pure as a coral tree, as fragrant and refreshing as a garden of campaka flowers. Its great function is at ease, attaining the precious jewel of a wheel-turning king's topknot. Its proper harmonious sound resonates, playing the lion-stringed lute. Without missing a single hair, it is perfectly and interpenetratingly clear, like a mirror reflecting images. Unobstructed by form or body, it pervades emptiness, like a sound passing through walls. If one can be thus, it is wondrously transcendent, completely realized in the present moment. Virtuous ones, tell me: what is this thing that is realized? Do you understand? It is as stable as the great earth, capable of holding all things; as vast as empty space, not even a needle can be hung.

Return with the bowl. Ascend the hall.
Coming and going, arising and ceasing, are always the nature of the Tathagata— Clear, wondrous, bright; open, awake, free and flowing.
The six sense doors have stopped their grasping; In the three realms, there is no body to cling to.
On the path beyond birth, Remember the one who turns again and again— Take notice, Layman Wanhui.

The master addressed the assembly: "Do not grasp at oneness. Do not grasp at difference. I am thus, and so are you. Two eyebrows manifest a body of blazing light; atop a hundred blades of grass, the ancestral masters' intent is proclaimed. Who makes the returning clouds embrace the green mountains? Falling blossoms freely follow the flowing stream."

The teacher ascended the hall and gave a teaching.
Guo, an attendant, asked Deshan, "Where do all the sages of the past go?" Deshan said, "What? What?" Guo said, "An imperial decree summons the flying dragon horse—a lame turtle sticks out its head!" Deshan remained silent.
The next day, while Deshan was bathing, Guo brought him tea. Deshan patted Guo on the back. Guo said, "This old man finally sees clearly today!" Deshan was silent again.
The teacher said, "The one who is honored at home—unstained by even a speck of dust. Meeting each other by chance is a different kind of brilliance. Deshan and Attendant Guo were both people who had already perfected the matter. Why were they still critiqued by Tiantong? Do you fully understand? A monk seized the jewel that could conquer cities; the king of Qin and Lin Xiangru were left embarrassed."

The teacher took his seat in the hall and said:
"Still as clouds, empty as a valley, responding skillfully without limit—east, west, north, south. If you get lost on the path of life and death within the board, you'll let the ax handle rot and never return home.
If you're truly a person of understanding, you act when it's time to act, and stop when it's time to stop. When you go, you go in such a way—but there's no place you go to. When you come, you come in such a way—but there's no place you come from.
Can you all fully understand this? Raise high the black and white pieces before you; make your move clearly in advance. If you win thoroughly, you'll master the entire game of horizontal and vertical strategies."
The Master ascended the hall and said: Deeply abiding within all things, Numinous and vast—neither empty nor not empty. Just as one ox drinks water, Five horses do not neigh in the wind. Within position, all news fades away; At the pivot point, there is transformation. All the affairs of a thousand worlds— In a snap of the fingers, they enter perfect harmony.

Entering the hall.
The three realms are merely mind; mind itself is the three realms. All phenomena are empty—observe freely. Everywhere is light, everywhere is body. This time, bubbles and illusions are all unobstructed. Spit clouds like mountains, swallow rivers like seas. Not a single hair exists beyond this. The myriad forms in all their lushness are entirely our home. Only this vast emptiness has a belly so great.

On the eighth day of the fourth month, he ascended the hall: The Buddha’s body is radiant, utterly without stain; The nature of water is pure, always clear and unclouded. His birth and bathing are an auspicious event, Meant to widely open the gate of merit and virtue. Endless chatter only adds to karmic offense, Ceaseless fussing only creates more tangled knots. Let everyone wash the Buddha’s entire body, Thoroughly cleansed, bright and pure. For a long time, all Buddhas have washed my body; Today, the assembly of monks washes my Buddha. Self and other, both are equally dedicated— Om, aho, nāma saṃbhava vajra hūm.

During the Dharma assembly, when it is time to act—act directly, standing upright without leaning on anything. When it is time to stop—stop completely, silent and alone, thoroughly alive. Through endless changes, do not seek merit for yourself; dwelling in the single suchness, do not hoard your own functions. Thus, Master Zhao said: "Conceal the profound mechanism before any sign appears; hide the dark movement within the transformation that is already happening." Furthermore, we recall the Third Patriarch's saying: "The essence is neither quick nor slow; one thought spans ten thousand years. Nowhere is not present; the ten directions are right before your eyes." All Chan practitioners, tell me: How do you put this into practice? Do you understand? Digging a pond does not wait for the moon—once the pond is ready, the moon will naturally appear.

The Master entered the hall and said: Caoshan asked Elder De, “When you hear that a bodhisattva in samadhi hears the fragrance of an elephant crossing a river—which sutra does it come from?” De replied, “The Nirvana Sutra.” Caoshan asked, “Does he hear it before samadhi or after samadhi?” De answered, “You, Master, are drifting away.” Caoshan said, “You have spoken, but you have only said half of it.” De asked, “How would you say it, Master?” Caoshan said, “Catch it from the shallows downstream.” The Master commented: The crossing at the silent ford, The color of vast clarity. When in flux, the effort is equal— Look closely, and it shifts. The golden rope slips from Mount Kunlun’s hand; Dangling nostrils—unable to seize it.

A tall person embodies the Dharma body as tallness; a short person embodies it as shortness. Emptiness itself is already form, yet the great earth is not dust. The Venerable Aniruddha sees through this; the Ākāśagarbha spirit settles steadily. Gulls drift leisurely over white waters, lost in playful reverie; a butterfly dream-flutters through spring, vivid and untethered. When it presses against your face and body, if your eyes lack strength—a lifetime of poverty awaits.

Entering the hall: It cannot be grasped as existing. It cannot be grasped as non-existing. In utter stillness, all directions are cut off. In vast emptiness, the single realm is pure and clear. Beauty and ugliness cannot hide from the bright mirror. Blue and yellow cannot stain the luminous pearl. The ocean of worlds cannot lock away the moon. At night, its flowing light falls upon the coral.

The master ascended the hall and cited a story: "Master Dongshan went to Master Xingping and bowed in respect. Xingping said, 'Don't bow before an old, worn-out man.' Dongshan said, 'But I bow before something that is not old and worn-out.' Xingping said, 'That [essential nature] does not accept bows.' Dongshan said, 'It has never needed to bow either.'"
The master then commented: "This 'it' is neither old nor worn-out— neither does it bow nor accept bows. It exists before the age of Great Silence, beyond the summit of the formless cosmic Buddha. Holding fast within the gourd, the daylight stretches long; once triggered, within the box, the blue dragon roars. A good physician warns the patient: taking medicine is not as good as guarding the mouth."

The nun requested the master to ascend the hall. It is not mind, not matter. It is neither divine nor human, Neither monastic nor lay. In the south, north, east, west—do not seek me. By length, breadth, square, circle—do not measure me. A cow drinks from the River of Stars, a hare sleeps in the moon’s cave. Utter spiritual clarity shatters all murk and blockage. Mount Mo rises transcendent—its peak takes no shape. Iron Grindstone adapts with ease—its tongue has no bone.

The senior seat of the front and back halls, the head of the sutra repository, has ascended to the hall.
"Our house holds an examination every day; Those with an enlightened, empty mind have great talent. Don't break off the cassia branch piece by piece— Instead, embrace it whole, along with the moonlight."
He then cited a story: Dongshan once addressed the assembly, saying: "To understand this matter is like a household raising three sons. One must serve in the prefecture, one in the county, and one in the village. One can use the money and goods from inside the house. One can use the money and goods from outside the house. One can use neither the money from outside nor the goods from inside. Tell me: which one belongs in the prefecture, which in the county, and which in the village?"
A monk came forward and asked, "Do these three not distinguish between importance and unimportance?" Dongshan said, "Yes." The monk asked, "What is the starting point for such a person?" Dongshan said, "Knowing there is something, and yet not knowing it—that is the starting point." The monk asked, "Does this person from this day forward exist or not?" Dongshan said, "They also exist from this day forward." The monk said, "Then this belongs to effort?" Dongshan said, "Yes." The monk asked, "What kind of effort is it called?" Dongshan said, "It is called the effort of accomplishment." The monk asked, "Does this person know those in the prefecture?" Dongshan said, "If they know, only then can they begin to respect them." The monk said, "Then the person in the village fully understands the matter?" Dongshan said, "Yes." The monk asked, "What is this person's fault?" Dongshan said, "Not knowing there is something is called an idle person—that is this person's fault."
The master then said: "There is one who can uphold the rules—pure and strict within. There is one who can turn the wheel of circumstances—subtly responsive without. There is one who steps back, united with those inside the house, and steps forward, joining those outside. Only then does one embody 'knowing there is yet not knowing'—the effort of accomplishment. Do you all understand? From now on, do not be confused by appearances; Instead, you must recognize the one who borrows effort."
Summer Retreat Dharma Discourse.
All noble meditators, The great earth in all ten directions is my own body — then I can truly observe the "cessation of foot travel." All beings in the ten directions are my own self — only then do I understand how to "protect life."
When observing cessation of travel, every step is taken with mindful awareness. When protecting life, every thought is still and unmoving. Thus it is said: "Take the great perfect enlightenment as my vihāra, Abiding body and mind in peace within the wisdom of equality."
My own observance of cessation does not hinder others from doing likewise. My own protection of life does not obstruct others from doing the same. Every Buddha to every Buddha arrives at this same principle; Every person, dwelling here, abides naturally in suchness.
Can you understand this? When self and other are both empty, there is no barrier. When self and other, dharma after dharma, are originally interpenetrating.

Teaching Assembly: Ten Directions Companions Dwelling Together
Clouds and moon, body and mind—where they shine is vast. Turning and shifting by the reed-covered isle, cranes and herons take flight. Let go of contrivance in forest ravines—mix with woodcutters and fishermen. When scars and marks are entirely gone, light has no boundary. The moment a single speck sprouts, thoughts become abundant. During a Dharma assembly on the Emperor's birthday, the master said:
"The sovereign's benevolence is cultivated with sagely virtue, and divine wisdom is all-embracing. It is like the creation and sustenance of heaven and earth, embodying the natural forces of yin and yang. The entire universe, when purified, is but one family. The myriad manifestations of enlightened beings appear without any separate truth. Speaking of the emperor's lifespan, it is beyond measure by kalpas. To repay his virtue is like gazing up at the vastness of the sky.
Dear practitioners of Zen, do you understand this person's realm of great freedom and perfect ease?
When the wheel of destiny first turns, The pivotal moment is marked by the radiant light of birth."

At the formal Dharma assembly, the teacher raised this case: A monk asked Master Zhimen, “What is the Buddha?” Zhimen said, “Worn-out straw sandals, walking barefoot.” The monk asked, “What is beyond the Buddha?” Zhimen said, “On the tip of a staff, lifting the sun and moon.”
The teacher commented: Worn-out straw sandals, walking barefoot. On the tip of a staff, lifting the sun and moon. Zhimen truly embodies the ancestral style— Unleashing Yunmen’s long tongue.
Great wisdom seems foolish. Great skill seems clumsy. No matter how hard you practice, you can’t penetrate it. Don’t pile dirt on level ground. Don’t drive stakes into empty space.

While traveling long on the path, I remember the mountain home. A single winding trail leads into the cool green. Looking far, clearing clouds fold the white silk. Crossing the threshold, a waning crescent falls like a golden plate. Only when ten directions vanish does the eye truly open wide. When all three times are swallowed, the belly feels vast and open. Transforming kun and peng—what season is this? A nine-thousand-mile journey into the sky, riding the wind.

A senior monk asked during a formal address in the hall, “I recall the monk who asked Jia Shan, ‘What is the true principle of reality?’ Jia Shan replied, ‘A stone gives birth to a rootless plant; a mountain holds a motionless cloud.’ What is the meaning of this?”
The Master said, “Move in the dark; hide in the light.”
The monk continued, “Could it be said to be a state that does not fall into emptiness, leaving no trace where it responds?”
The Master said, “Even so, one must be a person of complete substance.”
The monk asked further, “I humbly request the Master to explain: what is the true principle of reality?”
The Master said, “Turn back in the dim and dark places; revolve in the bright and clear places.”
The Master then said: “At midday it is hot; deep in the night it is cool. Who can ever reach the center of the ice-jar? Let mind and body reach directly to the clouds and the moon; wash spleen and lungs with frost and snow. Do not dwell in a place of one color; do not sit on the ten-thousand-year seat. When the jade person turns, the loom-gear moves; carefully discern what is leaning and what is upright within.”

To the assembly of supervisors:
Once, when Master Nanquan was harvesting grain, a monk asked, "Which way leads to Nanquan Road?"
Nanquan picked up his sickle and said, "I bought this sickle for thirty coins."
The monk said, "I'm not asking about the sickle. Which way leads to Nanquan Road?"
Nanquan replied, "This sickle of mine cuts well. I bought it for thirty copper coins."
The path beneath Nanquan's gate is open in many directions—take care, travelers, pay attention. Pay attention? That'll deceive you. A monk's eye is blocked by the mountain before him. But now, see through it—clearly revealed: the whole earth can be grasped in a single lump.
Esteemed assembly, if you understand this, not a single grain will escape you.

The Master ascended the hall and said:
A heretic once asked the Buddha, "I do not ask about words, nor do I ask about silence." The World-Honored One remained silent for a long time. The heretic said, "The World-Honored One is greatly compassionate—He has opened the clouds of my confusion and allowed me to enter." After the heretic withdrew, Ānanda asked the Buddha, "What did that heretic realize?" The Buddha said, "It is like a fine horse in the world—it moves at the mere shadow of the whip."
The Master said:
A single phrase transcends— a fine horse, the shadow of the whip. The Way goes beyond speech and silence; principle aligns with square and circle. Such exquisite skill with the axe— host and guest are truly pitiable. The craft of the wheelwright— father and son cannot transmit it. Do not try to find patterns in a tortoise shell; the moment right and wrong arise, that matter ends up in the year of the donkey.

The teaching hall stands alone, towering— Unbound by any shape or form; Wandering freely, far and wide— Unhindered by any direction or place. Miraculously transcending the world of objects, Brightly visible within the gourd.
The white clouds, like a child— When wind clears the cold sky, the air is pure and clean. The green hills, like a father— In the mist, one strip of autumn leanness appears.
Now tell me: how can you attain such harmony? Do you understand? The master beyond the curtain of night— Does not dwell in partiality or in perfect balance.

Great King Yü the Wise, a Chan master, once gave a Dharma talk, citing Master Héshān who told the assembly, "To study and learn is called inquiry. To abandon study is called nearing the goal. To go beyond both is true transcendence." A monk then asked, "What is true transcendence?" Héshān replied, "Knowing how to beat the drum."
The master commented: "Old Héshān, seizing the moment, did whatever needed doing. Master Yùwáng, seizing the moment, stopped when it was time to stop. That's why he didn't beat that broken drum. Good Chan practitioners, right now, as you let go and move forward, tell me—where will you land?" After a pause, he said: "On the riverbank, old green reeds hold snow. By the stream, clear autumn water chills the surface."

Summer Retreat Ends — Formal Dharma Discourse
A monk asked: "The ancients said, 'Gathered from the ten directions, each one studies the unconditioned. This is the place for selecting Buddhas; with an empty heart, you return home with success.' At this very moment, what is it like?"
The Master said: "Completely purified, with nothing to rely on. The entire body is unobstructed."
The monk said: "Then this person is like a layperson going to meet an official?"
The Master said: "Ah, but now you're getting caught up in temporary forms."
The monk said: "How can one not fall into the trap of temporary forms?"
The Master said: "Transcending the vast emptiness beyond kalpas — just one point of natural lucid awareness."
The monk said: "Does such a person still fall into hierarchical ranks?"
The Master said: "There's never been a fixed image to set up in this place; don't try to give it a name."
The Master then said:
The mirror reflects forms, the valley spirit echoes. Mind like clouds, shadows of the moon. At ease, not claiming any merit. Clear and distinct, responding without partiality. Don't ask about right or partial — who talks of stillness and motion? Natural square, natural round — who lacks and who has extra? Able to walk among different kinds, Constantly abiding in the great samādhi of the Nāgas. Those who freely wander in clouds and rivers, in this assembly, If they truly realize this, they too should join in celebration.

The master entered the hall and cited a monk's question to Yunmen: "At the end of summer and beginning of autumn, if someone suddenly asks about the path ahead, how should one respond?" Yunmen said, "Everyone step back." For a monk's conduct, what need is there for schemes? What room is there for analysis? The master addressed the assembly: "The eyes born of our parents can see all the realms throughout the cosmos. But if you put aside the mountain in front of you, what obstacle remains? Even if you see the whole elephant rather than just the parts, you may still be hindered by what's in front of you.
For a monk, this is truly fortunate—when self, others, and emptiness blend into one whole. Where else could we find any basis for clinging? Right here, in this very presence, you are Guanyin, the one who freely observes."
