Teachings of Master Jue of Tiantong Temple in Mingzhou

Preface to the Collection of Bhikkhu Puchong

A mind as clear as a polished mirror, reflecting everything without omission. A grasp of the profound pivot, where every insight strikes true. Such is the one who possesses the true eye and vast eloquence.

The master dwelled beneath Mount Taibai, where dragons and elephants tread, and hammers and chisels strike. His words and meanings flowed freely, all reaching the essence. Whether lay followers sought the Way and knocked at his gate, or wandering monks came for instruction, he would set out a scroll and respond with swift brushstrokes. He spoke in accordance with names, answered in line with questions. Thus were his Dharma words recorded. Here, I have gathered a few, roughly arranged.

Ah, the vast emptiness of the azure sky, the boundless flow of the great river—none can reach their deepest depths. These records are but a brief account, awaiting those of wondrous accord and spiritual awakening to strike the rhythm and appreciate the sound.

The mind-ground is originally empty and vast. This is its inherent nature from the very beginning. You must diligently cleanse and polish it, removing all deluded thoughts and habitual illusions. Then, you will naturally arrive at a state of purity, clarity, and perfect illumination—empty and without form, standing alone without relying on anything. Only by fully illuminating your true nature and letting go of external realms can you realize this.

Thus, it is said: "See clearly that there is not a single thing." This ground of mind is where birth and death cannot reach—the deep, clear source of illumination. From here, light can shine forth, and responses can manifest. All phenomena appear distinctly, yet they are hollow and without any counterpart. The wonder of seeing and hearing transcends sound and form. In all places, its functioning leaves no trace, and its mirror-like awareness encounters no obstruction. Naturally, mind and phenomena arise together in perfect balance.

The ancients said: "With a mind of no-mind, realize the Way of no-mind. Having realized the Way of no-mind, rest at ease."

Minister Jin Ke, with a serene mind sitting in silence, you have entered the wondrous circle of the center. This is how you must investigate deeply.

The true practice lies solely in quiet sitting and silent investigation, deeply reaching its essence. Externally, one is not swept away by the flow of causes and conditions. When the mind is empty, it can contain all; when its illumination is subtle, it is precise. Internally, there are no thoughts of grasping or clinging—vast and solitary, yet never dull; luminous and independent, yet naturally attained. This attainment is not a matter of emotion; one must be open and free, with nothing to rely on, standing alone and spiritually awake. Only then can one avoid being stained by defilements.

When this place of rest is reached, it is pure and bright; bright and penetrating. Then one can respond smoothly to whatever arises, facing all matters without obstruction—like clouds drifting freely from the mountain peaks, like the moon shining clear over the stream. In every situation, there is radiant spiritual transformation, entirely free from stagnation. Everything corresponds perfectly, like an arrow fitting its bow.

Then, through further cultivation, one becomes adept and steady, clearly aware in every place, without edges or corners, beyond doctrines and principles—like a white ox or a black cat, simply being as it is. Such a one is called a person of complete attainment. Thus it is said: "Those who embody the Way of no-mind can be like this; but for those who have not yet attained no-mind, it is exceedingly difficult."

Vast and boundless, without limits. Pure and clear, radiating light. Its spirit is unobstructed, Its brightness illuminates without effort. It can be called empty yet self-luminous, Its light naturally pure. Transcending cause and condition, beyond subject and object, Its wonder remains, Its illumination vast. Yet it cannot be grasped through words, concepts, or comparisons.

Here, at the pivot point, the mechanism turns freely, Responding effortlessly, its great function unhindered. In all places, it rolls along smoothly— Not bound by circumstances, not falling into categories. When you can rest securely within it, There, you merge with that; here, you merge with this. Here and there blend into one, without distinction.

Thus it is said: Like the earth holding up a mountain, unaware of the mountain’s towering height; Like a stone containing jade, unaware of the jade’s flawless purity. If you can be like this, that is true renunciation. Those who renounce the world must realize it in just this way.

For a monk, the mind must be cold and austere, letting go of all other distractions, and solely focused on polishing this field of the heart. It's like weeding a piece of land, clearing away every blade of grass and root, so that the boundaries are clean, without a speck of impurity. Then the spirit becomes bright and clear, shining through, so pure and smooth that not a single speck of dust can cling to it.

Once you've reached this state, you can lead the ox by its nose. Naturally, its horns will stand out proudly. You move among different kinds of beings without trampling on their crops. You move freely, at ease, with no need to restrain or arrange anything. This is what it means to plow through the field of emptiness.

When you come to this realization, everything becomes clear and vivid, present in every moment. A single thought spans ten thousand years, yet there is no fixed dwelling. As it is said:

The heart's soil holds all seeds, When the rain falls, all sprout. Once the flower's nature is understood, The fruit of enlightenment ripens on its own.

He does not cultivate to attain it—it is originally complete within him. He is not stained by defilements—utterly pure through and through. Right at the place of original completeness and purity, he gains an eye that sees through, breaks free, realizes clearly, and treads steadily.

Birth and death have no root or stem; coming and going leave no trace or sign. The original light shines from the crown; empty yet luminous. The original wisdom responds to conditions; still yet radiant.

Truly arriving where there is no center or edge, beyond before and after, only then does it become one whole.

Every root and every dust, every place and every situation, speaks with a broad, long tongue, transmits the endless lamp, radiates great light, accomplishes the great Buddha-work—

without borrowing the slightest external dharma. Truly, this is the affair of one’s own household.

In the midst of the bustling world, one manifests in many forms. Present in every encounter, there is not a single speck of external reality. Heaven and earth share the same root; all phenomena are one body. Adapting to change and accepting transformation, one is never bound by fleeting circumstances—this is true liberation. Like the wind blowing and the moon shining, one moves through the world without obstruction. Only then can one step back and return to take up the burden. Wisdom turns, principle is perfected; effort forgotten, position fulfilled. Not clinging to honor or status, one merges with the flow and blends with the dust, yet shines alone, transcendent. Only then does one realize: to inherit is the merit, yet once inherited, it is no longer one's own merit.

Shedding all superficial layers, the inner radiance shines through. Where countless mechanisms cannot reach, what a thousand sages never transmit— Only by deep, personal realization can one intimately connect.

The fundamental clarity shatters darkness; True illumination sees beyond. All dualities—existence and non-existence, feeling and measure— Are completely transcended.

The wonder lies before embodiment; The merit transforms beyond kalpas. Thus, in accord with conditions, one merges with awakening, Without obstruction from any dust of the senses.

Mind after mind does not cling to objects; Step after step does not dwell on the path. This is called one who can carry on the family work.

Since you’ve penetrated through, It’s time to draw close.

Void yet tranquil, without fear. Cold and simple, pure and genuine. In this way, the accumulated habits of many lifetimes are stripped away. When the stains of these habits are gone, the original radiance manifests clearly, Shining through the skeleton, leaving no room for anything else. It becomes vast and open, like autumn skies merging with water, Like snow and moonlight sharing the same color.

This ground has no boundaries or limits, No direction or location. It is a vast, seamless expanse— But you must still withdraw completely into the core to realize it fully.

At the very moment of full withdrawal, The mind’s thoughts and the mouth’s words are a thousand miles away. There is no principle to articulate, No place for pointing or annotating.

Only a person whose bucket bottom has fallen out Can truly trust this. Thus it is said: *Only realization corresponds.*

When that point of correspondence is turned, You enter the world, Playing in samadhi, Everything vividly present before you— Sound and form, influence and shadow— Have no trace at all.

Self and other do not come and go, Because within, there is no place of grasping. And this very *no-place of grasping* Contains the entire universe, vast emptiness, and the myriad phenomena— Nothing is left out.

A true person Should investigate in this way.

The true monk's practice is utterly free from the slightest attachment. Vast and luminous, clear as a mirror reflecting a mirror— no outer realms, no separate dusts of circumstance. Self-illumination is clear and present, yet nothing is grasped. This is called carrying the burden from within.

Once you carry it like this, wisdom shines even in darkness without dimming, the Way unites with reality yet dwells nowhere. From this dwelling-free place, you respond to situations appropriately— perfectly fitting, never leaking, truly unstained.

Like an echo in a valley answering a call, like wind moving through empty space— unhindered, at ease, no managing, no trace left behind. Yet, alive and aware—you cannot obscure it.

When you have traveled all the way to such a state, you are steady everywhere, at ease everywhere— like a white ox in an open field, pure and of one color. You cannot be driven away, nor can you be chased off. You must realize it yourself, arrive there personally.

Abiding silently in oneself, resting freely from all conditions. Clear, bright, unstained by dust—directly penetrating through. This place where we arrive is not something newly found today. From the vast, boundless eon before time, it has always been vividly clear, never dim, and alone in its radiant brilliance.

Even so, action is still necessary. When we act, let not a single thought arise, not a speck of dust obscure. Be utterly still, vast and tranquil, completely clear and open.

If rest and cessation are not complete, it is impossible to reach this realm and transcend birth and death. Only by directly seeing through— free from thinking and defilement, pure and devoid of worry, stepping back and letting go— can we be completely done.

Then we can shine forth and respond to the world, connecting with all things, fitting perfectly in every situation. Thus it is said: “Each phenomenon conceals nothing; from ancient times to now, it is constantly and clearly revealed.”

The true place of a monk lies in actual practice. One must penetrate deeply, illuminating the source, the subtlety within subtlety. It is wholly clear and radiant, one hue without trace. Yet you must turn around and go beyond this point—only then will you attain it. Thus it is called “being able to carry on the family enterprise.” No thread of the loom is hung; light and shadow vanish completely. Return to the father—one path; the wonder lies in the essence. Dust and dregs are ended, categories dissolve. Knowledge cannot reach it. Turn back and realize it directly. See through the skull. If you can awaken within, you will emerge and transform. Reed flowers under the bright moon, an ancient ferry, the boat sets sail. Jade thread, golden needle—at that moment the pivot turns. Enter the world, respond to conditions; each dust mote is thus, each phenomenon is non-dual. With the wind to fill your sails, naturally there will be no obstruction.

All Buddhas and Ancestral Masters have realized the same truth—they all arrive at that place of complete rest. The past, present, and future are cut off; all activity comes to stillness. In that direct moment, there is not a single thing to oppose you.

The Buddha-mind illuminates itself, penetrating wondrously to the very root. When you fully recognize this essence, you understand its depths completely. Then you manifest in countless forms to respond to situations. Every gate radiates light; every object reflects its image.

Then you realize: everything flows from this very source. At the tips of a hundred blades of grass, in every single place, there is nothing that creates causes or conditions for you. The entire body and being, utterly and completely, just goes on in this way.

Emptiness leaves no trace. Awareness is not entangled by objects or mental dust; its light penetrates stillness and depth, utterly free of flaw or stain.

To know this for yourself, to realize this in your own experience— this pure, wondrous field of clarity and insight is what has always been your own.

Yet for many lives you have failed to recognize it— only because doubt, obstruction, and dullness have created a veil of separation.

When wisdom opens vast and unbound, you forget even the merit of effort. Let go completely in this very moment, shoulder the burden fully.

Turn around and settle into place, borrow the path beneath your feet. The subtle function of awakened mind moves with ease— every encounter becomes genuine.

There is nothing whatsoever, not even a single hair or speck of dust, that comes from outside.

Dharmas are as they are. The mystery transcends words and paths; it is ever-present without interruption. Even the mountains, forests, grasses, and trees never cease to proclaim this truth. Only when you see through this will you realize that the vast, eloquent tongue cannot be concealed anywhere—it appears everywhere. The speaker is the listener; the listener is the speaker. Roots and sense-objects merge, wisdom and suchness unite; self and other share one mind, all dharmas are one reality. Where, then, can you draw distinctions? Yet even so, once you have penetrated what is directly before you, you must quickly collect yourself and return. Tend to the work within your own home; only then can you sit in stable peace.

The Way roams in the center of the cycle of existence. Reaching ultimate emptiness, it forgets all forms. When purity is complete, it naturally shines. This brilliance illuminates only itself.

Turning toward the realm of objects, before any sense organ or mental trace has formed, the subtle essence grasps that the traces of birth, decay, flow, and change have vanished. It stands alone at the root of creation. In that space, not even a hair's breadth of shadow or matter is held— only realization corresponds.

From here, with a single strike, the great thousand worlds open. Every thing, every object, becomes a place where I radiate light and speak the Dharma. My body manifests in a hundred billion forms, shining alone and numinous, yet never falling into names or forms.

It responds perfectly without effort. Like a pure mirror that reflects, like an empty valley that echoes, it is never burdened by seeing or hearing.

This is true freedom, unobstructed, the blissful play of Samadhi. If you can realize it in this way, wherever you go, will anything not be beneficial?

Those who are connected to the one lineage have a gaze tuned to the world and responsive to conditions. They are utterly unmistaken, never falling into error. Though myriad conditions arise, they cannot bury this gaze. Under the moon, in the water, to the wind through the pines – the shifting light and shadow do not confuse it, the sounds of the world do not distract it. It responds serenely, transcending even the shadow of an image. It goes along with circumstances, flowing into everything, yet never fails to hit the mark precisely. Still, this is merely slipping through the net of worldly dust—it has not yet returned to the original home. When you set aside all distractions, sit empty of worldly concerns, are silent yet shining, empty yet receptive, expansive yet responsive, no longer opposing external conditions, and are utterly clear and uniquely awake—only when you reach this state can you recognize our original patriarch.

Contemplate the true nature of the body, and do the same for the Buddha. If you can truly realize that your own self is without any external boundary, then you will directly arrive at a state without comparison, beyond thought. Buddha after Buddha, mind after mind—their essence is utterly unified without duality. A monk silently abides in stillness, yet his empty spirit is wondrously responsive, equal to the vastness of space, enduring through countless kalpas. He stands alone, utterly unattached, clearly beyond conceptual thought. This is the original place of abiding. When functions arise and transformations occur, he engages with the world through the ages, acting without effort, leaving no trace. Like idle clouds drifting or flowing water passing, nothing ever obstructs him. Cultivate until you are thoroughly stable and unwavering, so that nothing can move you. Only then will you no longer be turned by conditions. Truly embody this.

The place where a branch is born is called its root. The place where a stream flows from is called its source. When you see through to the source and recognize the root, you realize that before any flowing ever began, there was only stillness — solid, unmoving, not following the cycles of arising and vanishing.

Even though you do not follow them, you still possess all kinds of shadowy experiences. Call them forth, and they appear vividly — senses and objects drop away, insight transcends. Nothing can wrap you up or enclose you. When emotions are empty and thoughts sever, naturally you understand with perfect clarity, floating freely among countless appearances. Yet not a single thing can mix with you. Among all sense objects, you remain vast and untouched.

Hundreds and thousands of meditative states (samadhis) — each door is adorned, every teaching complete. But still you must gather yourself and return — to that original place, that former home. Recover the source, honor the root, let them merge into one. Only then will you see: the whole body has returned.

In the silent illumination, the sky is clear as autumn. Illuminating without a trace of effort, light and shadow both cease. This is the moment of complete transcendence, where true realization is attained.

The source is pure, the essence spirit-like; The pivot is empty, the function alive. Clearly and vividly, the original brightness appears.

Once it manifests, you can directly take hold of it. On the very tip of every matter, it is perfectly complete. It is one with heaven and earth, equal to the ten thousand phenomena. Open and free, unhindered in all directions. Heaven is heaven, humans are humans.

Responding to each being, you take on their form and appearance, And thus teach the Dharma.

If you can realize this fully, thoroughly— vast and open, with nothing obstructing you—

The wind accompanies the tiger, the clouds follow the dragon— they move in perfect unison, naturally attuned. There is no deliberate intention involved; this is simply the way of nature.

A monk who has realized this principle of universal interplay, can harmonize with causes and conditions, just as they do. When the tiger appears, the wind does not announce it. When the dragon departs, the clouds do not hide it.

This subtle truth enters all places perfectly, yet no place can contain it fully. It floats freely above the ten thousand forms, and is clearly seen within every shadow and shape— without even a hair’s breadth of separation.

Blending seamlessly, it responds to every occasion. Landing precisely, every phrase reaches home. But you must deeply penetrate this through thorough practice.

Only when the clouds scatter and the wind ceases, when the autumn sky is clear and the moon has set, when water and sky merge without boundary— only then does the single radiance of this truth begin to shine.

The Way is not something passed down by ancestors. Before any ancestors came, it already filled all things completely. Naturally, it is empty—leaving no trace. Subtle, luminous—standing alone beyond duality. It shines uniquely, beyond causes and conditions. Ever-living, free of form and limitation. That is why it is called the Ancestor. It can only be personally realized; it cannot be handed over from one to another. The ultimate attainment of all Buddhas is this point. Their compassionate manifestations and transformation bodies bloom like flowers and leaves, every root and every speck of dust. Wisdom enters the three times, and ten thousand phenomena do not disturb me. Not a single speck of dust exists outside my; mind. The wondrous teachings beyond the great universe appear—where else could there be any trace of illusion?

Profound, still, and silent, it illuminates the very source. This place is empty yet numinous, vast yet clear. Though there is a pristine image that reflects itself, it has no shadow or echo—no counterpart. If one can break through to see this, there is still the power of discernment and bearing the burden. Yet one must step back further to reach the center of the circle. Light radiates within it, standing alone and distinct. Yet it knows how to borrow function—this is called "birth." Here, it emerges and vanishes in subtlety, discerning finely. Once able to manifest multiple bodies, one can handle affairs. There is a seal that imprints all phenomena, yet the seal leaves no mark. Moving through the world, responding to conditions, you naturally enjoy the samadhi of each particle of dust. This enjoyment is self-emptying; it cannot be filled. Like the empty valley receiving clouds or the cold creek washing moonlight—neither present nor absent, it is untouchable beyond transformation. Furthermore, let go, free of gain and direction. Everywhere and anywhere, return it to its original place—not a hair's breadth has moved. Stumbling and awkward, a hundred uglinesses and a thousand clumsinesses, yet naturally rounded and smooth. Master Zhao Zhou washed his bowl and drank tea—no need for arrangement; it's always been right here, present. If you see with such an eye, penetrating each thing thoroughly, only then can you be considered a true monk's practice.

To study Buddhism and explore the subtle essence of the tradition, you must clear your mind, quiet your spirit, silently wander within, and look inward. Penetrate to the very source of the Dharma, where no tiny obstacle—not even a speck—remains as a hindrance. A vast openness appears, formless, like autumn waters reflecting the sky. It shines with a pure brilliance, like moonlight overcoming the night. In that very state, clarity does not dim; stillness remains untainted. It is naturally thus, always tranquil yet constantly luminous. Its stillness is not the emptiness of annihilation; its radiance stirs none of the mind's shadows. It is an empty, white, perfect purity, unchanging and unshaken through countless ages, neither moving nor darkening. In this state, one can be silently aware; one can step in the world with stability. Turn the jade vessel, and with a single flick, the mind shifts. Then you manifest in the world through diverse forms. Every realm, every location, every conditioned phenomenon—all are established by your own nature. They arise together with your own four elements. What could obstruct you? Since nothing is an obstacle, self and other have no separate forms; I and they bear distinct names no longer. Amid the noise of sounds and sights, you drift through freely, clearly meeting all that arises. Hence it is said: "No mountain or river separates; the light penetrates everywhere." In that moment, realize it directly.

The field of inherent awareness is luminous and clear, ancient and unchanging. You cannot grasp its boundaries, nor can it be marred by any stain. To wander and step within it is like wild clouds resting against mountains—a natural, tranquil way. It is like autumn water reflecting the moon—a state of pure clarity. When you truly arrive at this place, you will realize that the field of mind, the ground of Dharma, is the source from which all forms emerge. Its nature never withers; its flowers and leaves fill every realm. Thus it is said: "When a single seed lies in the untilled field, without tending, the sprout naturally flourishes."

The true person has no fixed abode. White clouds obscure the roots of green mountains, and the bright moon lies in the belly of flowing water. When the clouds part, the mountains reveal themselves; when the moon shifts, the water grows cold. An autumn scene stretches vast and boundless—no conditions can reach me, and the stillness of myriad transformations cannot disturb me. Those who can sit steadily within this space can stride forth, turn around, respond to circumstances, and enter the world. There is a saying that transcends all directions: "The six doors are not shut, yet the crossroads leave no trace." Everywhere you go, you cannot be mixed with the ordinary; quietly, not a thing has stirred. A complete person knows where to go.

A mind as vast and open as space itself—equal to the boundless sky. Yet its means of engagement move in harmony with all phenomena. Not a single speck of dust remains outside its reach, which is why it can respond to change. Not a trace stays lodged within, which is why it can dwell in stillness. When the center is empty, it can respond freely—receiving or not receiving, there is no difference. When the outer world is engaged yet always recognized as empty, abiding and non-abiding become one. This is the way of the monastic practitioner. One who enters samadhi in every situation should proceed just like this.

The ten directions and the three realms arise from this one mind. When the mind is still, all appearances cease. Where is "that"? Where is "I"? In that moment, there is no distinction. Directly—not a single dust mote established, not a single thought arising. Passing through what is before the womb and after the body, a single point of wondrous clarity, round and rolling, without direction or trace—utterly undeniable. Where it cannot be denied is called "self-realization." That very point of self-realization is called "inherent attainment." There is not a hair’s breadth of anything attained externally. Vast and open, vast and open— wondrous presence without form, true hearing without sound. Thus it is said: "Beyond the reach of ears and eyes." This is the place of wondrous accord, the ultimate point. From within it, light shines forth, and a thousand realms appear. Every head, every thing is that very thing— all are the monk’s realm of personal enjoyment. And yet, it borrows nothing from another’s house. One must personally and truly realize it to attain it. We of this family lineage should practice in this way.

Realizing that all things are empty by nature, the mind becomes free in every moment. In each particle of experience, the original radiance shines through—illuminating everything, nowhere excluded. Thus, one adapts skillfully to circumstances, meeting each situation with wisdom. This is the wondrous reflection on all conditions, utterly beyond opposition or comparison.

The wind in the pines, the moon on the water—both are clear and gentle, naturally in harmony. There is no mind of coming or going, no trace of clinging or lingering. The key lies in the heart being empty yet receptive, responsive to the outer world without being disturbed.

Just as spring adorns flowers, just as a mirror reflects images, in the midst of bustling activity, one naturally stands apart—rising above it all with clarity and ease.

In the place where the field is firm and solid, when livelihood becomes cold and still, you then witness the emptiness of kalpas. There is not a single hair's breadth of anything that creates an entanglement of conditions, not a speck of dust that creates an obstruction or veil. Emptiness reaches its ultimate, and there is light; purity becomes round, and it shines radiantly. Clearly, there is a matter that has never dimmed throughout countless ages.

If you nod in recognition that it exists, you do not follow arising and ceasing, nor do you dwell in permanence or annihilation. When you need to respond and adapt, you transform together with the myriad appearances. When you need to abide in stillness, you share the same Way as heaven and earth that cover and support all things. Emerging and disappearing, rolling up and unfolding — everything is within your control.

A genuine person of true nature must handle things this way — only then can they truly gather and release.

Daylight shows the sun, and night shows the moon—this is the moment of mutual non-deception. This is the steady, peaceful footing of the monk. Naturally, there are no gaps or seams. If you wish to walk with such stability, you must completely uproot the subtle, hidden weaving of your conditioned mind. Do you want to avoid this subtle agitation? Then you must cut off all attachments, let go completely, penetrate thoroughly, and illuminate everything. When both light and shadow are forgotten, when the skin and shell fall away, when the root defilements are purified—then, naturally, your vision will become clear, your daily needs will be fulfilled. You will not be burdened by any circumstance, yet respond appropriately at all times. In the bright, there is darkness; in the dark, there is light. A single boat carries the moon; at night, one rests among the reeds. A radiant clarity—truly, this is so.

Pure and luminous, the eye cannot reach its bounds. Still and vast, the mind cannot fathom its extent. Those who have truly penetrated to the depths confirm that this is indeed our original ground. Neither buddhas nor demons can intrude, no dust or stain can defile it. Perfect in square and circle, fitting measure and step, its wondrous functions number like the Ganges' sands, perfectly complementary. From this ground arises, from this ground it is exhausted. Such reality is present in everyone—but go ahead and seek it for me, will you? Those who know will nod in mutual recognition.

A talisman kept up the sleeve can respond to all situations. The eye on the crown of the head naturally illuminates the solitary, liberated self. They take in and release together, neither inside nor outside. The great universe and I arise together; the three times are naturally transcended. Infinite and boundless, the true illumination is solitary and bright. At that moment, all images vanish completely, yet that which is beyond vanishing remains. The mysterious spirit is independent of all conditions; birth and death cannot reach it. Having arrived at this state, one is vast and free, without anything to rely on, untouched by the dust of sense objects. At that moment, the state and the mind are perfectly aligned, like a lid fitting a box or an arrow hitting its target—without the slightest discrepancy. To play freely in samadhi is the natural enjoyment of one who has realized this. The eye on the crown and the talisman up the sleeve represent a direct transmission between monastics. Realize it fully, just as it is.

Truly, this is the very foundation of a true monk's practice: It does not freeze, nor does it drift. It is not rigid, nor is it mixed. When you've passed through the dry ground, you know how to turn the pivot. When you enter the noisy world, you have clear eyes. You adapt and interweave, with everything clear and unhindered.

The moon drifts along with the stream; the wind bends the grass. Shining bright and flowing freely, yet I am never confused by it. That's why it's said: Though things seem alike, they are not the same; Surpassing them, there is a path.

When the right moment comes, you may go in that way. Gather it all back, from the tip of every blade of grass. Now what should you do? Sit down, put on your robe, and look within— From now on, see for yourself.

This entire matter has no fixed rules to learn. The key is to open and empty your body and mind, making them equal in measure to the great void itself. Then naturally, you will be complete and full in every situation.

The spirit is clear and cannot be obscured; it is distinct and cannot be mixed up. The moon follows the flowing water; the rain chases the passing clouds. There is truly no such mind that can create such things. Simply do not use your ego to obstruct things, and naturally, no thing will obstruct you.

Body and mind are one. There is nothing outside the body. They share the same essence and function, the same nature and form. Every sense organ and every object is immediately free from all relative distinctions.

That is why it is said: The sage has no self, yet there is nothing that is not of the self. Seeing it clearly here and now, you will understand: whether gathering in or letting go, it becomes a single white ox exposed in the open field. Even if you try to drive it away, it cannot be driven away.

A practitioner’s conduct is like drifting clouds—without intention—and like the full moon shining everywhere, unobstructed by anything. It is clearly present within all phenomena, yet stands out beyond them. Encountering conditions as they arise, it remains unstained and unmixed. It shares the same function with all things, the same essence with oneself. Words cannot transmit it; thoughts cannot reach it. It transcends dependence, moving freely without contrivance. It is wondrously realized beyond the mind’s perceptions and feelings. Applied on the path, it is received at home. It ends birth and death, transcends causes and conditions. True insight is ever-luminous, originally abiding nowhere. Thus it is said: “The mind pervades the ten directions; yet it abides in no place at all.”

When at rest, it is like the great ocean receiving a hundred rivers—everything converges here into one single flavor. When in motion, it is like a high tide riding a swift wind—everything comes forth to journey together. Is this not reaching the true source? Is this not realizing great function right before your eyes?

A renunciant practitioner responds and adapts to conditions freely, exactly like this. When has it ever involved deliberate thoughts or clinging to worldly conditions? One must embody this fully and completely.

True purity leaves no trace. When all merit and accomplishment are exhausted, there is then no place for discrimination. Though nothing can be distinguished, this is the whole body. The eye cannot see itself, yet it cannot be deceived either. Where the ground shines forth, it illuminates with pure clarity—like reed flowers blending with snow, or the bright moon cleansing autumn. Then there arises the opportunity for interreflection and the path of mutual gazing. Vigorously bring it forth, and apply it perfectly. Nothing can confine me, yet nothing can possess me. I stand one step beyond all phenomena. Juzhi’s one-finger Zen was enjoyed for thirty years without exhaustion. Those who attain the subtle are simple, so in silence they do not engage with words. Those who realize the function are at ease, so in response they do not cling to objects. The Way roams with the spirit and rides on principle—such is its nature. But if even a grain or a speck is introduced into it, the pivot becomes blocked and cannot move, the latch sticks and cannot turn. Emptiness itself contains all existence; existence itself merges with a portion of emptiness. What more is there to do?

The origin of all origins is empty, beyond form— quiet yet responsive when stirred.

You must see through it completely: solitary, towering, utterly exposed; alone, numinous, radiantly clear— not yet touched by a single external condition.

This is what is called the time of singular illumination.

When it emerges and submerges with the ten thousand forms, when all sense-objects arise in samadhi— pure as the ocean's reflection, turning like a pearl on a tray— it falls effortlessly, pervading everything; firm and unshaken, not a separate condition.

This is truly the time of solitary radiance, free from partiality.

The night moon rises, and the water gleams; the spring breeze blows, and flowers bloom. No need for effort— naturally, it is complete.

Causes and conditions, effects and retributions— within this, nothing is outside its bounds.

Yet you must still know: When both light and its objects vanish, what remains?

In the rustic way of a forest monk, a single bowl serves as one’s entire livelihood, and all things in the world are one’s property. This relationship between self and things is like an image in a mirror or the moon on water—interfused without any separation. As long as we do not first set up a concept of a self, then no object is truly separate from us. When we see that all appearances are without fixed nature, there is simply this—nothing else at all. If we can be thoroughly like this in every way, then we are truly capable of putting it into action.

Before the functioning of the moment, the pathways of conceptual thinking are cut off. Beyond appearances, the sense faculties and their objects both vanish. At such a time, we must step back and return home—only then do we have a share in the deep realization.

Clouds blur the single color; snow covers a thousand mountains. It is only by seeing through them that we finally glimpse the moment when the whole body manifests.

Those who walk the Way transcend words and thought. In direct reality, there is naturally a path of recognition. Yet do not cling to doctrines. Vast and empty, merging seamlessly — like moonlight flowing across waters, like wind moving through the sky. Naturally, nothing obstructs or hinders. This transcends the duality of illumination and function. Though it illuminates, there is no trace; though it functions, there is no mark. Enter samadhi amidst all sense objects. Gather the ten thousand phenomena into a single seal. No leakage, no movement. This is what is called a "completed" monk. Yet you must also remember the path home. When clouds vanish, the sky grows cold. In late autumn, mountains appear sparse and bare. This is the place where the original self dwells.

A monk’s own field of awareness is vast, open, and level, with no cliffs or boundaries. There, one plucks clouds and plants moonlight—clear, empty, and spacious. It is one’s own to use freely: emerging or disappearing, letting go or gathering in. The two forces of yin and yang arise and grow together with it; all phenomena appear and vanish with it.

Soaring and towering, whence does it come? Quiet and still, where does it go? It can be said that even space cannot contain it, and the great earth cannot support it. Its wondrous presence has no form; its ultimate emptiness has no name. Both existence and non-existence have exhausted their functions; the paths of ordinary and holy are cut off. Only then does one reach home.

At that very moment, what does one obtain? A thousand miles of cold water, clear as snow under moonlight— Look well at the one who plows within.

The body and mind, withered and cold, Cultivate the field like washing and grinding. When dust and turmoil are cleared away, A single realm opens — empty and bright.

Moon on water, sky after rain, Cloudy mountains in autumn light. Deep and still, dark and clear, Luminous, numinous, aware.

Shining back to its own root, Not clinging to branches and leaves — At that very moment, you transcend All bonds of emotion and time.

Unlimited by ages, One thought spans ten thousand years, Never shifting, never changing. From this place, you respond to the world —

Like clouds drifting through empty valleys, At ease in motion and stillness alike. Gently entering every realm of dust, Always abiding in samadhi.

Thus it is said: The naga is always in calm absorption; There is no time when it is not.

Marvelously present, yet wondrously still. Radiantly aware, shining alone. You cannot grasp it; it cannot be named as existence. You cannot wear it away; it cannot be named as non-existence. It escapes conceptual thought, and leaves no trace of images. Where there is emptiness, that very emptiness is the wondrous. Awaken to the wondrous, and you find the radiant. Find the radiant, and you call it back. The mind is like the moon, the body like a cloud, Appearing wherever conditions take you. In the present moment, there are no traces. Yet everywhere, it radiates light. It responds to things without conflict, Enters the mundane without being tainted. It pierces through all obstacles, And illuminates the emptiness of all phenomena. Within the realm of differing conditions, It enters the pure awareness. Playing in samadhi—what is not possible? Thus should you truly and honestly investigate it.

One transcends form and forgets conditions, reflecting clearly beyond shadows. A single point of spiritual presence, luminous and unobscured.

The mind of past, present, and future is cut off; the four great elements have exhausted their bonds. Empty and clear, wondrous and bright, it shines alone through countless ages.

If a monk practices like this, he is not bound by birth and death. At the very moment of practice, he lets go over a precipice—nothing to hold. The thread at his feet breaks; he leaps completely beyond.

All the Buddhas and patriarchs cannot reach this true, wondrous, illuminating ground. Call it "yourself." This is the time of inheriting the family tradition.

As soon as a thought stirs, you drift again in the cycle.

Empty, yet ever spiritual; pure, yet ever clear. Reeds and bright moon— undivided whiteness and clarity.

A single boat drifts in with the oar— nothing prevents its graceful turning.

At this very moment, truly, tell me—who is it that urgently discerns with open eyes?

Walk the ten perfections fully, with no center or edge, no corners or angles— perfectly round and rolling.

Even more, be hollow and empty, without sediment. Like an autumn sky cleared after rain, cold and bright; like moonlight washing the night. Like brocade clouds and blooming flowers— the atmosphere turning to spring.

The vital gate opens through emptiness. The mechanism of the mind turns and responds— all these are the personal experience of a true practitioner.

No sense object obscures you. All phenomena are just the light of the mind. Step by step, you transcend dimensions; the birds' path has no obstruction.

Clearly responding to the world, the valley spirit never tires. Yet within it all, you cannot be mixed with the mundane. The hidden meaning cannot be compared to anything.

In every land, every speck of dust, every thought, every moment— there is fundamentally no different appearance, only pure, single true luminosity.

This is the time of returning, the moment of finding the wondrous within function.

If instead you roll up all conditions, focusing only on yourself, polishing until flawless, sweeping clean all traces— then you shine alone in solitary awareness, silently savoring the utmost wandering.

Knowledge reaches the hub of the circle, but matters remain outside the gate. This is a unique, unborn essence— but you must step back and return home, and speak of this gently, with care.

A wandering monk moves through the world. They must keep their mind open and empty, with not a speck of dust inside. Only then can they respond skillfully, unhindered by things, unbound by teachings. They move freely through it all, with true ease. As soon as you start to think or grasp, you bury yourself. You need to cultivate this until it’s natural and pure, then you can move effortlessly through ten thousand situations— neither opposing nor clinging, like an arrow piercing its target, perfectly fitting every lid. If you can truly let go of all leaks and flaws, you are someone capable of building a real legacy. But then you must return from that place— white clouds entering the valley, the bright moon circling the mountain, a time when you merge with the source. That’s why it’s said: “Three people share one staff, sleep in one bed—inside and out, no trace remains.” All is blended into one whole, calm as rain clouds clearing, clear as autumn waters. All you good people, remember this matter well.

My family has a field of land, open and vast, clear and luminous, naturally reflecting itself. It is empty yet responsive, still yet aware—this is the very ground where all Buddhas and patriarchs appear and transform, are born and enter nirvana. Wonderful indeed—everyone possesses it. Yet few polish and purify it to brightness; most remain dull and unaware, their wisdom overshadowed by delusion as they drift along. If a single thought can shatter this ignorance, you transcend the dust of countless eons. Radiant, clear, and pure, it cannot be altered by past, present, or future; it cannot be scattered by the four marks of existence. Alone, shining, still and full, it spans all ages, unites all distinctions, and is the mother of all creation. When insight arises from here, the entire universe manifests—every appearance is but a reflection within this realm. Realize this directly.

Adapt to the world through the senses. Move through the world with the body. Empty yet spiritual, still yet illuminating— from within the ten thousand phenomena, emerge one step ahead. Do not be buried by dust and filth. Do not be entangled by conditions like a silkworm’s cocoon. Like the moon moving through space, like clouds drifting out of a valley— see without intention, act without self-interest. To illuminate, to moisten— this is to be fully realized. Free yourself entirely, clean and pure. Use it with ease and elegance. This is called “breaking out from inside the gate.” Yet you must also realize the moment of inheriting the family legacy from within. Emptiness is your seat, stillness your home. Wondrous existence is not a thing— it does not depend on conditions. True illumination is not nothing— it does not fall into categories. Shining alone within the center of the ring, deep and clear beyond measurement. The ultimate spirit roams freely in the infinite— nowhere is outside. From this ground, activate your potential. Naturally, you will attain unobstructed, free, and responsive use.

A practitioner navigating the world responds to events with graceful detachment, untethered yet purposeful—like clouds forming rain, like the moon following the current, like an orchid thriving in seclusion, like spring permeating all things. Their actions arise without deliberate intention, yet their responses are precisely attuned. This is the conduct of one who has seen through reality.

Yet one must go further: turn back to recognize the source, plant your feet on steady ground, and rest your being in pure stillness. Stand alone, without companions, breaking through the path before the dawn of distinction. Only then can you fully penetrate both center and periphery, reach the summit and the depths, and freely exercise the power to kill or give life, to roll up or unfold—truly sovereign and unbound.

Boundless yet intrinsically luminous, pure yet naturally clear— It can pervade all without the effort of perceiving, Can discern all without the burden of conceptual thought. It emerges beyond existence and non-existence, Transcends the realm of thought and discussion. Only realization corresponds to it; it is not received from another.

Buddha after buddha, patriarch after patriarch— Leaf after leaf, flower after flower— This is the unbroken lineage passed down. When responding, do not grasp at appearances; When perceiving, do not cling to conditions. Then you can dwell clearly, without confusion— This very family tradition. It is manifest everywhere, complete in every moment— Yours to take in and embody.

Gaining the skin or the marrow is still just setting up steps and ladders. Adding leaves and flowers has led to widespread dissemination. If a Chan practitioner sees through this, why blame the patriarchs for coming from the West and doing so many things? It's like growing branches beyond the main stem, putting dust in the eyes. There are even those who plunge themselves into endless contrivances, carving marks on the boat to find a lost sword—when will they ever be in tune? Now, let go directly, let it all fall away. Let it fade completely—don't let a single hair or a single grain remain. Cleanse it all thoroughly, and naturally there will be a place of liberation: perfectly integrated yet clear, spiritually penetrating yet wondrous. Then you'll realize—originally there is no lack, no excess. Words cannot reach it, hearing and seeing cannot grasp it. Like the rhinoceros's horn-sense, like the pearl in the clam—this radiance is where you truly dwell and walk. Devote your spirit to realize it.

From the time of the Buddha, there has never been any distinction between monks and laypeople. Each person has their own truth to realize—when they clearly experience this truth for themselves, they gain the direct penetration into the true heart of Buddhism. This is called "entering the Buddha's mind-seal," reaching the very bottom of the Dharma.

The Old Lu (the Sixth Patriarch, Huineng) was originally a woodcutter. When he first arrived at Huangmei Monastery, he simply said, "I want to become a Buddha." There, he worked the pestle in the rice mill until his "mind-mirror" was free from defilement, shining clearly by itself. In the middle of the night, he received the robe and transmission, and fled over Dayu Ridge. When the robe was put down, Senior Brother Ming tried with all his might to lift it but couldn't. Only then did he understand that each person's direct realization is truly their own.

Now, do not be so humble as to defer to the ancient sages. Just as you wear clothes and eat food, let every thought be free from distracting speculation, let every moment of mind be free from defilement. Free yourself from the realm of empty time; let go at the edge of the cliff. Pierce through to the absolute depths of sense faculties and sense objects. Then, in solitary brightness, you shine alone; vast and clear, the wondrous presence remains. Naturally, the flower of the mind blooms, revealing itself in all realms. When have there ever been any gaps or changes? Thus, you can enter the path of all beings, walk the "bird's path," unfettered and free.

All of you young monks, who seek to transcend birth and death, must make your bodies withered and your thoughts cold. You must utterly penetrate to the deepest fathomless depths, gather your mind in empty stillness and perfect illumination, and break through the four elements and five aggregates. Go back to the time before causes and conditions had come together, before the sense doors had been completed, before the womb had wrapped itself around you, and before emotional consciousness had begun to drift and flow. If you can set one eye down right there, how could you possibly fail to understand? When you understand in this way, the Ancestor's own nostrils and the lifeblood of the monk are both in your grip—to hold fast or to let go, it is up to you. Therefore it is said: When deluded thoughts cease, stillness arises of itself; when stillness arises, true awareness manifests; when awareness arises, stillness dissolves by itself—clear and brilliant, there remains only true insight.

Great stillness, great rest. Around your mouth, mold gathers; on your tongue, grass grows. Let it all completely drop away. Cleanse it until pure, polish it until bright— like autumn in water, like the moon reflected in empty space.

In such crystal clarity, you must also know the path of turning around. When you turn, there's no face left for you to recognize. Where nothing can be discerned, you cannot be ignorant either. This is the moment of breaking through to the very top, penetrating to the very bottom, tracing to the root, reaching the source. All the countless enlightened ones have walked no different path.

The wonder lies in returning along the road, borrowing it to set your feet. In brightness, there is hidden darkness—its function leaves no trace. At the tip of a blade of grass, in the bustling marketplace— your body drifts freely, your steps move with dignity. Naturally riding sound, transcending form, surpassing hearing, leaping beyond sight— this is the matter within the gate of a true practitioner.

The mind originally has no attachments. The Dharma originally has no words. The Buddhas and patriarchs, with no other choice, Spoke from the second level of truth, Using questions and answers to awaken A few dull-witted people.

As Deshan said: "Our school has no words or phrases, And gives not a single teaching to anyone." It is simply that each person must realize and confirm this for themselves. Only then can they speak of it.

But if you directly wash away the dust of deluded thoughts, When that dust is cleansed, The mind becomes vast, clear, and luminous— Without boundaries, without center or edge. Round and whole, radiant and bright, It illuminates the ten directions and cuts through the three times. In this state, no conditions, words, or concepts can leave a single speck of dust. It is only a silent knowing, A solitary brilliance shining on its own. Not greater than the sages, not less than ordinary people— It is just that one thing you always had. What could ever be gained from outside?

This is called the true ground. One who realizes it can respond to all situations and enter any condition. Their wondrous function is naturally unobstructed and ever radiant.

A pure and undefiled body is your true body. A perfect, unconditional awareness is your true eye. The eye within the body does not rely on the senses. The body within the eye is not an aggregate of form. Thus it is said: There is no wisdom independent of Suchness that realizes Suchness, nor is there a Suchness independent of wisdom that is realized by wisdom. It can be said that the Buddha is the Buddha within the realm of Dharma, and the Dharma is the Dharma within the realm of Buddha. When a practitioner arrives at this understanding, they truly know they are born from the mouth of the Buddha, born from the flower of the Dharma, and have attained the essence of the Buddha's teaching. Is this truly the case? Let go of both extremes—only then can one embody this timeless, universal person. Contemplate it in such a way.
