Chapter 1: The Prologue

Thus have I heard:

At that time, the Blessed One was staying near the city of Gaya, not far from it, beneath the Bodhi tree, together with a great assembly of seven thousand monks, all of whom were great Arhats—those who had exhausted all defilements, free from all afflictions, having done what needed to be done, accomplished what needed to be accomplished, with minds well liberated and wisdom well liberated, like great dragons who had attained the knowledge of past lives, having laid down the heavy burden, having achieved their own good, having severed the three bonds of existence, with no further rebirth, having realized true wisdom regarding all phenomena, deeply entered the nature of reality, reached the other shore, skillful in the Dharma, born from the Dharma, unaffected by favorable or unfavorable conditions, speaking gently and kindly, greeting others with warmth, pure in conduct, brilliant in mindfulness, and fully accomplished in the path to liberation—except for Ananda, who was still in the stage of learning.

Furthermore, there were eighty-four thousand great bodhisattvas present. All of them were destined to attain enlightenment within a single lifetime. They had effortlessly penetrated the very depths of all-knowing wisdom, and the buddhas of the ten directions constantly appeared before them. They had mastered the dhāraṇī gate of non-attachment and abided in the samādhi gate of heroic progress. They enjoyed great freedom and played freely within the gates of liberation. Having already transcended all afflictions and obstacles, they spread great compassion universally across all worlds in the ten directions, traversing the boundless oceans of realms throughout the Dharma realm. Dwelling in non-abiding forms, they entered the nature of emptiness, and constantly worked to benefit all sentient beings. They had already skillfully mastered the realm of buddhahood. Their minds and wisdom were vast and immeasurable, like space; deep and boundless, like the great ocean; steadfast and unmoving, like Mount Sumeru; unstained and pure, like a lotus flower; inwardly and outwardly clean, like a mani jewel; radiant and blazing, like refined gold. They possessed immeasurable and boundless stores of merit such as these.

Their names were: Samantabhadra Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Universal Eye Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Universal Contemplation Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Universal Light Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Universal Flame Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Supreme Intention Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Ever-Growing Intention Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Boundless Intention Bodhisattva, Vast and Expansive Intention Bodhisattva, Great and Broad Intention Bodhisattva, Exhaustless Intention Bodhisattva, Earth-Holding Intention Bodhisattva, Sentient Being-Holding Intention Bodhisattva, Attaining Superior Intention Bodhisattva, Skillfully Discerning Intention Bodhisattva, Sovereign King of Dhāraṇī Bodhisattva, Torch-Bearing Bodhisattva, Jewel-Seal Hand Bodhisattva, Jewel Crown Bodhisattva, Jewel Topknot Bodhisattva, Jewel Accumulation Bodhisattva, Jewel Birth Bodhisattva, Jewel Peak Bodhisattva, Jewel Banner Bodhisattva, Vajra Treasury Bodhisattva, Auspicious Treasury Bodhisattva, Stainless Treasury Bodhisattva, Pure Treasury Bodhisattva, Tathāgata Treasury Bodhisattva, Wisdom Treasury Bodhisattva, Sun Treasury Bodhisattva, Samādhi Treasury Bodhisattva, Lotus Treasury Bodhisattva, Liberation Moon Bodhisattva, Universal Moon Bodhisattva, Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva, Universal Vision Bodhisattva, Lotus Eye Bodhisattva, Vast and Adorned Eye Bodhisattva, Universal Dignified Conduct Bodhisattva, Universal Splendor Bodhisattva, Universal Practice Intention Bodhisattva, Wisdom Intention Bodhisattva, Dharma Intention Bodhisattva, Vajra Intention Bodhisattva, Lion's Play Bodhisattva, Great Cloud Sovereign King Bodhisattva, Lion's Mighty Roar Sound Bodhisattva, Vast and Profound Wondrous Sound Bodhisattva, Non-Attachment Bodhisattva, Separated from All Defilements Bodhisattva, Moonlight Flame Bodhisattva, Sunlight Flame Bodhisattva, Wisdom Light Flame Bodhisattva, Wisdom Auspiciousness Bodhisattva, Moon Auspiciousness Bodhisattva, Lotus Auspiciousness Bodhisattva, Virtuous Auspiciousness Bodhisattva, Jewel Auspiciousness Bodhisattva, Wondrous Auspicious Youth Bodhisattva, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, Maitreya Bodhisattva… and others, who were the leaders. All of them were destined to attain enlightenment in the present virtuous eon. Together with these eighty-four thousand great bodhisattva mahāsattvas, they were present.

There were countless beings from the Realm of the Four Great Kings, led by the Four Great Kings themselves. There were countless beings from the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, led by Shakra, their king. There were countless beings from the Suyama Heaven, led by the Suyama Heavenly King. There were countless beings from the Tusita Heaven, led by the Tusita Heavenly King. There were countless beings from the Heaven of Enjoying Creations, led by the King of that heaven. There were countless beings from the Heaven of Freely Enjoying Others' Creations, led by the king of that heaven.

Also present were the Sun God, the Full Moon God, and the Merchant Leader God, each accompanied by countless celestial attendants. The great Brahma King arrived with his vast assembly of Brahma deities. The deities of the Pure Abodes and Maheshvara, the Great Lord, also came, each with their own countless followers.

Thus, countless celestial beings, dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, each accompanied by hundreds of thousands of their followers, gathered together.

There were also countless monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen, each accompanied by their followers.

Thus, countless assemblies from all directions came to the Buddha's presence, bowed their heads at his feet, withdrew to sit on one side, and respectfully gathered around him.

At that time, the Tathāgata sat among the assembly on the Vajra Throne—his majestic presence towering above all, like Mount Sumeru rising from the great ocean. His radiant light outshone everything, like the bright sun ascending into the sky. Those who beheld him felt refreshed, like gazing upon the full autumn moon. His body and mind were utterly serene, like the great Brahmā King. He was revered and feared by all, like Indra, lord of the gods. Endowed with the seven sacred treasures, he was like a wheel-turning monarch. He decisively proclaimed the Dharma's emptiness and non-self, roaring like a lion. His light illuminated all worlds, like a great fire blazing in the darkness of night. He emitted countless rays that shone universally upon all worlds in the ten directions, like celestial jewels and heaps of precious gems. Without discrimination, he subdued demonic forces and crushed all false views, like a mighty elephant king. Toward favor or disfavor, his mind remained unstained, like a clear, pure pond. He stood fearless among the multitude, like a lion. His wisdom was deep and vast, boundless and immeasurable, reaching to no bottom, capable of giving rise to every treasure of merit, like the great ocean. He poured forth the rain of Dharma, moistening and maturing all beings, like a great dragon. He possessed such countless virtues, beyond all measure.

At that time, all those gathered in the assembly, with one mind and joined palms, gazed up at the Tathagata, thinking how rare it was to encounter him. The Tathagata, with great compassion, looked upon all with his kind eyes, and the radiance of his body shone universally.

At that time, the Bodhi tree stood in the center, and for seven yojanas in all four directions—on the ground and in the sky—gathered gods, dragons, and all beings of the eight divisions. They filled every space completely, leaving not even the smallest speck of dust where no sacred being was present.

The Tathagata's Vajra Seat rises one yojana in height, with its length and width each measuring half a yojana. It is draped with countless kinds of exquisite celestial garments, numbering in the hundreds of thousands and millions. Above, precious canopies hang suspended, adorned with networks of bells and tassels. Multi-colored silk banners and streamers are arranged and erected, hanging all around the four sides of the seat. The ground beneath is made entirely of vajra, smooth as the palm of a hand—pure, moist, fragrant, and soft. When stepped upon, the foot sinks slightly; when lifted, the surface returns to its original state. All beings who behold it feel joy and delight without end.

At that time, the gods, wishing to make offerings to the Buddha, rained down exquisite celestial flowers—such as champaka flowers, atimuktaka flowers, varshika flowers, mandarava flowers, great mandarava flowers, manjushaka flowers, and great manjushaka flowers—scattering these various heavenly blossoms over the Buddha and the entire assembly. The flowers blanketed the ground, and a gentle breeze stirred them, releasing a wondrous fragrance that cleansed away all impurity.

Suddenly, from the ground, countless precious lotus flowers emerged, each as large as a cartwheel. Their petals were made of pure gold, with hundreds of thousands of layers. The stems were crafted from beryl, the platforms from indigo gems, and the filaments from a rare precious stone. These flowers released a subtle fragrance that surpassed even the heavens. They were soft, radiant, and smooth to the touch. Anyone who saw them found endless delight, and those who touched them found their heat and worries dispelled, leaving both body and mind refreshed and serene. All these wonders appeared as an offering to the Thus-Come One.

At that time, not far from the Vajra Seat, at its four corners, precious trees sprang up from the ground. Each tree was made of the seven treasures, with trunks rising two and a half yojanas high, and their branches and leaves spreading to cover one yojana.

At that time, the Dharma Prince Manjushri Bodhisattva Mahasattva, seated within the great assembly, gazed upon the Tathagata seated upon the vajra throne—his majesty and virtue supremely honored, his radiant light blazing brilliantly, overshadowing the entire multitude, surpassing a hundred thousand suns, eclipsing all other brilliance. The entire assembly beheld him without ever growing weary, their minds awakened to purity. Then, arising from his seat, Manjushri knelt with palms pressed together and praised the Buddha with wondrous verses, saying:

佛身如鎔紫金山, 光明映蔽於大眾;

The Thus-Come One's majestic form cannot be measured, Surpassing humans, devas, and all sages. Like a full moon shining in the clear sky, Outshining every star's faint light.

The Buddha dwells in a vast ocean of compassion, Emitting a hundred thousand rays that illuminate all. As Mount Sumeru rises from the mighty sea, Where devas reside and radiate their glow.

He abides in the meditation of liberation, His sovereign light illumines everything. Like the great Brahma lord of the triple world, His tranquil radiance exceeds all lesser gods.

Merit and wisdom adorn his mind, His jeweled features grace his body with universal light. Like Indra's splendor and his wisdom, Transcending all the devas of Trayastrimśa.

Great compassion naturally adorns him, Establishing beings upon the sacred path. As the Four Heavenly Kings protect the world, He comforts, guides, and teaches all living beings.

The Buddha-sun forever radiates the Dharma's light, Illuminating all beings and dispelling false views. As a thousand suns blaze with brilliance, Dimming the glow of gems and fire.

The Buddha's face is perfect, features sublime; All who see it rejoice with pure hearts. Like the clear full moon at midnight, Beings delight in its refreshing coolness.

The Great Sage ever shines with wisdom's light, Eradicating all the darkness of ignorance. As a great fire blazing on a mountain at night, Its brilliance reaches far without exception.

The Buddha teaches non-self and the emptiness of all dharmas; All heretics are struck with terror. As a lion's roar resounds from a mountain cave, All beasts who hear it lose their very spirit.

The Buddha's body shines like molten gold mountain, His light outshines the entire assembly. Like a radiant mani jewel's glow, It surpasses the brilliance of every other gem.

The gates of merit, wisdom, and skillful means— All his diligent practices are perfectly adept. Surveying the world, none can compare, How could anyone transcend the World-Honored One?

I behold the Great Hero, compassionate toward the world, An ocean of wisdom radiating light. I prostrate my whole body at the Buddha's feet, My joy and rapture beyond all control.

I praise the Thus-Come One, the world's lamp, Source of merit and supreme wisdom. May this store of goodness benefit all beings, That they may swiftly attain great Enlightenment.

At that time, the young prince Manjushri, a great bodhisattva, having spoken this verse in praise of the Buddha, joined his palms in reverence and gazed upon the Tathagata without ever looking away. With a focused mind, he contemplated the subtle nature of the Dharma in which the Tathagata abides—so profound and difficult to enter, not a visible form, hard to see, hard to comprehend, beyond the reach of ordinary fools and outside teachers. It is subtle, still, and inconceivable, giving rise to the unequaled wisdom of all Buddhas—inconceivable; flowing forth the distinct teachings of the Dharma realm—inconceivable; only the Tathagata fully understands and illumines it, abiding in the state of non-abiding, the realm of emptiness, directly realizing the fundamentally pure and true nature of all phenomena. He attains the unobstructed liberation of all Buddhas, abiding forever, unchanging, peaceful and serene. His body fills all realms, appearing before all sentient beings, entering the equal source of the three times. This is beyond the scope of mental measurement; even thinking and speaking about it for countless eons cannot exhaust it.

Mañjuśrī, having thus examined and profoundly contemplated the deep nature of reality with subtle observation, remained silent and still.
