The "Zen Forest Compendium of Implements and Instruments" is a Buddhist scripture authored by the Japanese Rinzai Zen master Mujaku Dōchū during the Edo period. Mujaku Dōchū was a renowned 17th-century Zen scholar, well-versed in Zen rituals and monastic regulations. This work systematically categorizes the various ritual implements, utensils, architectural features, and daily tools found within Zen monasteries, meticulously documenting their names, functions, forms, and historical origins. It stands as an encyclopedia of Zen monastic culture. As an essential text for studying the institutional systems of the Zen monastic community, it not only preserves a wealth of invaluable firsthand materials but also reveals the unique material culture traditions of Zen Buddhism. It holds irreplaceable scholarly value for understanding the history and monastic life of Zen Buddhism in China and Japan, and is regarded within the Buddhist community as a classic reference work for researching Zen monastic regulations.
