Master Yongming Yanshou, a Chan master of the late Tang and early Song dynasties, was honored posthumously by our Shizong Xian Emperor for his dedicated practice of Pure Land teachings and for broadly benefiting sentient beings. He was conferred the title "Wondrous and Perfect, Right and Cultivated, Wisdom-Awakening Chan Master," and was established as an orthodox figure in the Buddhist tradition. His works, such as *The Mirror of the Source-Mind*, *The Collected Treatises on the Myriad Good Deeds Returned to the One*, and *The Mind-Verse*, have already been included in the Buddhist canon.
Mr. Huang Songshi of Wulin searched for scattered writings and also found the master's *Mountain-Dwelling Poems* and *Traces of Yongming's Way*. These were already printed in Weiyang. Additionally, the *Record of Self-Practice*, a text detailing the master's 108 actual practices, serves especially as a raft for ascending from lower learning to higher understanding.
Mr. Huang once brought this text to the capital. The Grand Minister of Justice, Mr. Zhang of Yunjian, regretted that he discovered it too late to submit it for inclusion in the canon. After Mr. Zhang passed away, his son, Mr. Ren Bojing, requested that the text be edited, printed, and distributed to help accumulate merit for his father's afterlife.
Those who read this text with reverence, faith, and a commitment to practice will each receive the master's seal of the Amitabha tower. This may well be the subtle guidance of Mr. Zhang's spirit.
Respectfully recorded by the Western Hermitage Layman Jiang Gongfei, on the first day of the fifth month of the summer of the tenth year of the Qianlong reign.
