> Instructions for Wu Guangshou

既不疑生死。不疑古德公案。何得生大怖畏。何得尚慮疑箭入心也。是所云不疑者。猶有疑也。昔二比邱犯淫殺。維摩一言之下。罪滅無餘。今若能如二比邱。則不必論。否則另有一法。經云。至心念佛一聲。滅八十億劫生死重罪。若䖍誠念佛十萬八千。無罪不滅。所罰之呪。如風捲雲。如日銷露。如一滴投於大海。如片雪點於紅爐。淨盡滅除。更無踪跡矣。

> If you neither doubt life and death nor question the ancient masters’ koans (paradoxical teaching stories), then why do you experience such great terror? Why do you still worry that the arrow of doubt might pierce your heart? This so-called “no doubt” still contains doubt. In the past, two monks committed the offenses of killing and sexual misconduct. With a single word from Vimalakīrti, their sins were completely erased without a trace. If you can be like those two monks, then there is no need for further discussion. Otherwise, there is another method. The sutras say: If you recite the Buddha’s name with wholehearted sincerity, even a single recitation eliminates eighty billion eons of the heavy karma of birth and death. If you reverently recite the name one hundred and eight thousand times, no fault remains unerased. The curse of punishment will dissipate like wind sweeping away clouds, like sunlight melting morning dew, like a single drop cast into the vast ocean, like a single snowflake landing on a blazing furnace — utterly purified, entirely eliminated, without any trace left.
