At that time, the Bodhisattva Sarvanīvaraṇaviṣkambhin said to the World-Honored One, "I have heard the Buddha speak of the past deeds of the great Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara. What is the gate of samādhi that this Bodhisattva possesses? May the World-Honored One, out of compassion, explain it to me."

Good Man! Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva possesses not only these samadhis, but in every single pore, he has hundreds of thousands of millions of samadhis. Good Man! Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva, although dwelling at the bodhisattva stage, has such merits that even the Buddhas and Tathāgatas praise them as unprecedented. Good Man! In a past life, when I was a bodhisattva, I once traveled with five hundred merchants to the land of Siṃhala. We loaded our carts with camels, oxen, and other beasts of burden, seeking wealth and treasures, and set out on the road. Passing through villages, camps, towns, and settlements, we eventually reached the seashore, intending to board a great ship. We all climbed aboard. I asked the ship's captain, 'You should observe the wind—from which direction does it arise? To which country shall we go? Shall we head for the jewel island, or to Java, or the land of rākṣasīs?' The captain then observed the wind and said, 'This wind is favorable for the land of Siṃhala.' So we set sail with the wind toward Siṃhala. In that land, five hundred rākṣasīs suddenly conjured a violent great wind, stirring waves and tossing the ship until it was wrecked. All the merchants fell into the water, drifting and struggling, until they floated to the shore. The five hundred rākṣasīs saw the merchants and, each shaking their bodies, making terrifying sounds, appeared in the form of young maidens and approached the merchants, giving each one clothes. The merchants put on those clothes, wrung out their wet garments, and spread them to dry. Then they left that place and rested under a campaka tree.
After resting, they said to one another, 'What shall we do now? What means do we have?' Finding no plan, they fell silent. At that moment, the rākṣasīs returned and said to the merchants, 'We have no husbands. Will you take us as wives? Here we have food, drink, clothing, treasuries, gardens, and bathing pools.' Then each rākṣasī took a merchant to her own dwelling. Among those rākṣasīs, one was the chief mistress, named Ratikalā. She took me to her dwelling. She offered me fine food and drink, abundant and satisfying, and I enjoyed pleasures no different from the human realm. I stayed there for two or three weeks, when suddenly I saw Ratikalā break into a delighted smile. I was puzzled, thinking, 'I have never seen or heard of this rākṣasī smiling like this.' So I asked her, 'Why are you smiling now?' The rākṣasī replied, 'This is the land of the Siṃhala rākṣasīs. I fear for your life.' I then asked, 'How do you know this?' The rākṣasī said, 'Do not go south. Why? There is an iron city there, surrounded on all sides, top and bottom, with no gates. Inside are countless merchants, many of whom have already been devoured, leaving only skeletons. Some are still alive, some dead. If you do not believe me, just go along that path and see for yourself.'
So I waited until that woman fell into a deep sleep. Then, toward the night, the bodhisattva took up a moon-light sword and went south along the path. Arriving at the iron city, I walked around it and saw there was no gate, no windows. Beside the iron city stood a campaka tree. I climbed up it and called out loudly. The merchants inside the iron city said to me, 'Noble great caravan leader, do you know? We were put here by the rākṣasīs, and every day they devour a hundred of us.' After they told me all that had happened, I climbed down from the campaka tree and hurried back south along the path to the rākṣasī's place. When I returned, she asked me, 'Noble great caravan leader! Did you see the iron city I spoke of? Speak truly now.' I said, 'I saw it.' Then I asked her, 'What means can get me out of this place?' The rākṣasī said to me, 'There is indeed a great means that can let you leave this land of Siṃhala safely and return to the southern continent of Jambudvīpa.' Hearing this, I asked her, 'By which road can I leave this country?' Then Ratikalā said to me, 'There is the holy Horse King who can rescue all sentient beings.'
I then went at once to where the holy Horse King was. He ate the white medicinal grass, and after eating, rose from the golden sand, shook his mane, and said, 'Who wishes to reach the far shore?' He said it three times: 'If you wish to go, say so yourselves.' So I said to the holy Horse King, 'I wish to go there now.' Having said this, I returned to the rākṣasī's dwelling and stayed the night with her. When the rākṣasī woke from sleep, she felt regret and asked me, 'Caravan leader! Why is your body so cold?' I knew then that she did not intend to let me go. So I used a skillful means to tell her, 'I just stepped out of the city to relieve myself and have only now returned, so my body is cold.' She said to me, 'You should go back to sleep.' At sunrise, I rose and gathered the merchants, saying, 'You should all leave this city now.' When all the merchants had come out of the city, they gathered in one place to rest and said to one another, 'Whose wife among us now shows the most affection? What did you see? What happened?' Some said, 'She gave me fine food and drink.' Others said, 'She gave me various clothes.' Others said, 'She gave me crowns, earrings, and garments.' Others said, 'I received nothing—she did not please me.' Others said, 'She gave me various fragrances of dragon musk and sandalwood.' After the merchants had spoken in this way, I said to them, 'You will be hard to free. Why do you desire these rākṣasīs?' Hearing this, the merchants were terrified and asked, 'Great caravan leader! Is this really so?' I told them, 'This land of Siṃhala is inhabited by rākṣasīs. They are not human. They are indeed rākṣasīs.' And I made this vow: 'May the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha know this to be true of these rākṣasīs.' Hearing this, the merchants said to me, 'What means can save us from this calamity?' So I told them, 'This land of Siṃhala has a holy Horse King who can rescue all sentient beings. He eats the great white medicinal grass, rises from the golden sand, shakes his body, and says three times, "Who wishes to go to the far shore?" I have already told the Horse King, "I wish to go to the far shore."'
The merchants then asked me, 'On what day shall we leave?' I told them all, 'In three days, we will certainly depart. You should prepare your provisions.' With these words, they all returned to the city and went each to his own rākṣasī's dwelling. When the rākṣasīs saw them return, they greeted them, saying, 'Are you tired now?' I then asked my rākṣasī, 'I have never seen your delightful gardens and bathing pools. Are they real?' The rākṣasī said to me, 'Great caravan leader! This land of Siṃhala has many pleasant gardens and bathing pools.' I said to her, 'Prepare provisions for me accordingly. I will wait three days and then go to see the various gardens, ponds, and famous flowers. I will bring various flowers home with me.' The rākṣasī said, 'Great caravan leader! I will prepare the provisions for you.' At that time, fearing that the rākṣasī would discover my plan and kill me, I remained silent in my thoughts. The rākṣasī gave me excellent food to eat. After eating, I sighed. She asked me, 'Great caravan leader! Why do you sigh like that?' I said to her, 'I am from the southern continent of Jambudvīpa. I miss my homeland.' She said to me, 'Great caravan leader! Do not miss your homeland. This land of Siṃhala has all kinds of food, drink, clothing, treasuries, and many pleasant gardens and bathing pools. You can enjoy all kinds of pleasures here. Why think of that southern continent of Jambudvīpa?' I remained silent.
After that day passed and the second day came, she prepared food and provisions for me. All the merchants likewise prepared their provisions. On the third day, at sunrise, they all left that place. After leaving, they said to one another, 'We should hurry now and not look back at the land of Siṃhala.' With these words, I and the company swiftly went to where the holy Horse King was. Arriving, we saw the Horse King eating grass, rising, and shaking his mane. At that moment the very ground of the land of Siṃhala trembled. The Horse King spoke three times: 'Who now wishes to go to the far shore?' The merchants said, 'We wish to go to the far shore now.' The holy Horse King, rousing himself, said, 'You should go forward and do not look back at the land of Siṃhala.' Having spoken thus, I mounted the Horse King first, and then the five hundred merchants all climbed onto the horse. Then all the rākṣasīs of the land of Siṃhala, hearing that the merchants had left, cried out in anguish and rushed after them, weeping, wailing, and shouting in pursuit. When the merchants heard those sounds, they looked back, and without realizing it, they slipped and fell into the water. The rākṣasīs then seized their bodies and devoured the flesh. Only I alone reached the southern continent of Jambudvīpa. The holy Horse King reached the shore, and after dismounting, I circumambulated the holy Horse King three times, then left that place and journeyed on to my homeland, returning to my own home.
When I reached home, my parents saw me come back. They embraced their son, joyful and yet weeping with sorrow. Because they had always wept for me, their eyes had grown dim, but now with that weeping their blindness was cured, and their sight became clear as before. Then my parents and I were together, and I told them all the hardships I had endured. Hearing it, my parents said to me, 'Today you have escaped with your life and returned safely. This brings us great comfort, and we have no more worries. We do not need whatever riches you have acquired. Now we know our years are many, and we are frail with age. We need you to support us, to help us in and out, and to wait on us. When death comes to us, you will be the one to give us a proper burial.' Thus did my parents, in those days, comfort me with kind words. O Sarvanīvaraṇaviṣkambhin! At that time, as a caravan leader, I endured such dangers and sorrows."
