Three Treasures Miracles Summary Record

The Buddha was staying in the Bamboo Grove. At that time, there were two great cities in Jambudvīpa: one called Puspapurī (Flower City) and the other called Indraprastha (City of Victory). These two cities experienced alternating prosperity and decline. At that time, the city of Indraprastha was prosperous and thriving. Its king was named Devarāja (Heavenly King), and he ruled the land righteously, free from enmity, suffering, and calamities. The harvests were abundant. His queen was named Cūḍāmaṇī (Crown Jewel). He had two great ministers: one named Hita (Beneficial) and the other named Apahāra (Remover of Troubles). At that time, in Rājagṛha (King’s City), the king was named Bimbisāra (Jar-Born Shadow). His queen was named Vaidehī (Fair-Bodied), their prince was Ajātaśatru (Unborn Enemy), and the minister was Varṣākāra (Rain-Maker).

One day, King Devarāja held a grand assembly and asked his people, “Is there another kingdom as prosperous and happy as mine?” At that time, a merchant from Magadha replied, “To the east lies the city of Rājagṛha, whose kingdom resembles yours.” Hearing this, King Devarāja developed affection for King Bimbisāra. He asked his ministers, “What does that kingdom lack?” They answered, “They lack precious gems.” So the king filled a golden casket with fine jewels and sent it to King Bimbisāra along with a royal decree. When King Bimbisāra received the gifts and read the letter, he was overjoyed and asked, “What does that kingdom lack?” His people replied, “They lack fine cloth.” So the king filled chests and boxes with the best local fabrics and sent them to King Devarāja, along with a letter.

When King Devarāja saw the gifts, he was delighted and asked the messenger, “What does your king look like?” The messenger replied, “He is tall and majestic, just like you. He is brave and valiant, personally leading battles.” So the king ordered a set of five extraordinary suits of armor to be made for King Bimbisāra. These were: (1) cool to wear in the heat, (2) impenetrable by swords, (3) resistant to arrows, (4) protective against poison, and (5) capable of emitting light. When the armor was finished, he wrote a letter and sent the messenger to deliver it to King Bimbisāra.

King Bimbisāra read the letter and examined the armor. He was amazed and estimated its value at one billion gold coins. Worried, he thought, “Our kingdom has nothing like this. How can I repay him?” At that time, Minister Varṣākāra saw the king’s anxious expression and asked the reason. The king explained everything. The minister said, “That king gave only a set of armor. But in your kingdom, you have the Buddha—the supreme jewel of humanity, unequaled throughout the universe.” The king replied, “Indeed, that is true. But what should I do?” The minister answered, “You can have an image of the Buddha painted on cloth and send it to him.” The king said, “If so, let me ask the Buddha.”

The king then informed the Buddha of the matter. The Buddha said, “Excellent! This is a wonderful idea. Have an image of me painted and send it to that king.” The method for painting the image was as follows: first, paint the Buddha’s likeness. Below the image, write the Three Refuges. Then write the Five Training Rules (the five precepts). Then write the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination—both their arising and their cessation. Above the image, write two verses. The verses are:

After writing, he gave the letter and the painting to the messenger and said, "When you bring this portrait to your country, hang silk banners and canopies in a spacious place. Arrange flowers and incense, and set up a grand display. Then open the image. If someone asks what this is, say, 'This is the image of the World-Honored One, who gave up his royal throne and attained true enlightenment.' Then you can explain the meaning of each word in order."

King Bimbisara left joyfully. He had the portrait and the account of the event placed in a gold and silver casket, and sent a royal letter to King Prasenajit. When Prasenajit opened and read it, he was furious. He said to his ministers, "What extraordinary and wonderful gift could that country have, that their letter tells me to clear the roads for two post stations, decorate the city walls, gather the people with flowers, canopies, and banners, and have me personally lead my fourfold army out to greet it? Seeing this picture, they clearly intend to insult me. You should assemble the four divisions of the army. I will go myself to attack Magadha."

The ministers replied, "We have heard that the king of that country is a man of great character and should not be taken lightly. Great king, you might as well follow their request. If you carry out the instructions in the letter and lay out the offerings, then lead the people to the city, open the painting, and gaze upon it, you will see."

Then merchants from central China arrived. They all chanted in unison, "Glory to the Buddha!" and so on. When the king heard this, his hair stood on end. He asked them one by one the meaning. The merchants answered fully. The king recited their words and returned to his palace. He contemplated their meaning, and by dawn, without rising from his seat, he attained the first stage of enlightenment. Joyfully he recited this verse.
