Thus have I heard:
At that time, the Buddha was at the Great Spring of Aruṇa, accompanied by a great assembly of five hundred bhikkhus. All were Arhats, possessing the six supernormal powers and spiritual mastery—except for one bhikkhu, Ānanda.
At that time, the Buddha said to Shariputra: "In the distant past, in the city of Rājagṛha, there was a wealthy elder named Sudatta, who possessed great riches—abundant treasures, elephants, horses, the seven precious things, servants, attendants, and complete estates. He had a son named Sumati. When his father Sudatta passed away, Sumati had a younger half-brother named Suyaśa. Sumati thought to himself: 'How can I devise a plan so that I do not have to share the inheritance with Suyaśa?' Then he thought: 'Only by killing him can I avoid sharing it.' Sumati said to Suyaśa: 'Dear brother, let us go to Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa to discuss some matters.' Suyaśa replied: 'Very well.' Sumati then took his brother's hand and led him up the mountain. Once they reached the summit, he pushed him off the highest cliff, buried him with stones, and thus ended his life."
The Buddha said to Shariputra, "Do you know who the elder Sudatta was back then? He is none other than my father, King Śuddhodana, today. And who was his son, Sumati? That is myself. And his younger brother, Suyaśa? That is Devadatta today."
The Buddha said to Shariputra, "At that time, I was greedy for wealth and harmed my brother. Because of that sin, for countless thousands of years, I was burned and boiled in hell, crushed by iron mountains. The remaining karmic traces from that time—even though I have now attained perfect enlightenment—still could not spare me from this past retribution. While I was walking on Vulture Peak, Devadatta lifted a cliff rock, six zhang long and three zhang wide, and hurled it at the Buddha's head. The mountain deity of Vulture Peak, named Jinpiluo, caught the rock with his hand. A small fragment from the edge of the rock flew off and struck the Buddha's foot, breaking his big toe and drawing blood."
Then the World-Honored One spoke this verse about past lives:
"In the past, for wealth's sake, I killed my half-brother, Pushing him off a high cliff, and piling stones upon him. Because of this deed, I suffered long in hell, Where in that realm, I was crushed by iron mountains. As a remnant of that karma, Devadatta hurled a rock, And a falling shard struck my foot, breaking my big toe. Karma never fades, nor does it vanish in the void. Guard the three gates—do not transgress with body, speech, or mind. Now I have become a Buddha, a guide for the three worlds, At the great lake of Anavatapta, I speak of this past-life tale."
After the Buddha had spoken these words, Shariputra and the five hundred arhats, along with the dragon king Anavatapta, the gods, dragons, spirits, celestial musicians, demigods, garudas, centaurs, and mahoragas, all heard what the Buddha had said. They rejoiced and put his teachings into practice.
