The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Liaotang Weiyi is a collection of the words and deeds of the eminent monk Liaotang Weiyi from the Linji school during the Ming Dynasty. It was compiled by his disciples Zongyi, Youduan, Siqi, and others. Liaotang Weiyi lived during the transition from the late Yuan to the early Ming Dynasty and was active in the fourteenth century. He received Dharma transmission from Chan Master Xiaoyin Daxin. His thought inherits the style of the Linji school while integrating the strengths of various Chan traditions of his time. The recorded sayings include Dharma talks, dialogues of opportunity, letters, verses, and other materials, vividly reflecting his direct, sharp, lively, and dynamic Chan approach. It serves as an important document for studying the development of the Linji school and the evolution of Chan thought during the Yuan-Ming transition, holding a pivotal position in the history of Buddhist Chan.
