Essential Regulations for the Chan Monastery (禪林備用清規)

盈 嗣法師忌

Memorial for Master Ying Si

Ancient masters only keenly promoted the essential teachings of their tradition to awaken people to their own true nature. They guided future generations, ensuring that there was authentic transmission as an expression of gratitude. Baling's three turning phrases, used during the death anniversary ceremony, did not follow worldly customs. Later generations fell short of the ancients, focusing instead on lavish banquets and abundant offerings—should this not cause shame? In recent times, Dachuan hosted the death anniversary for Zhejiang Monk, and Hengchuan hosted the death anniversary for Tianmu Monk. The abbot set out a seat, placed one portion of food, lit one stick of incense, and performed nine full bows, but did not allow scripture chanting. These two great masters had deep intention in this practice.

Naturally, honoring one's teacher and respecting the Way are rites that should not be neglected. On the anniversary of a teacher's passing, offerings must be prepared. These should be placed in the vestment cabinet, with funds set aside in advance and allocated to the monastery's permanent assets. The offerings are to be arranged in the Dharma Hall, where the ceremonial seat is adorned with a portrait of the deceased. The same procedures apply for the anniversary of Bodhidharma's passing.

Having a special meal prepared, the abbot invites a respected elder to serve as the ceremonial leader, seated to the right of the abbot. If no such elder is available, they do without. The abbot then performs the formal greetings, strikes the drum three times, and then steps back to his seat.

The shrine attendant announces the sutra-chanting schedule in advance, posting notices in the various dormitories. They also inform everyone that at the midday meal the following day, all must maintain proper demeanor for the memorial sutra recitation. When the evening bell rings, the community gathers for chanting. The attendant instructs the abbot's guest to invite in advance the two administrative officers and senior monastics to accompany the memorial tea ceremony. Seats are arranged in the upper area of the Dharma Hall. The shrine attendant sets out the appropriate number of seats. Dharma relatives who are elders or fellow disciples should all be invited, but junior disciples and grandsons in the Dharma should not sit at the same table.

無量壽禪師設忌。第三座小師。伴真湯果。非禮也。

Master Chan Master Wuliangshou held a memorial ceremony. The third seat, his junior disciple, accompanied him with offerings of soup and fruits. This was improper conduct.
