Juzhi Raised His Finger
Master Judi, whenever anyone came to ask him a question, would simply raise one finger.
Later, a young attendant was asked by a visitor, "What is the Master's teaching?" The boy also raised one finger.
When Master Judi heard about this, he took a knife and cut off the boy's finger. The boy ran away screaming in pain.
Master Judi called out to him. The boy turned back. Master Judi raised one finger. And suddenly, the boy understood.
As the Master was about to pass away, he said to his assembly: "I received the 'One-Finger Zen' from Heavenly Dragon. I used it all my life and never exhausted it."
With these words, he entered final Nirvana.
Wumen says: The realization of Juzhi and the young boy did not lie in the finger itself. If you can see this point clearly, then you can string together Tianlong, Juzhi, the boy, and yourself all on one thread.
The verse says:
Juzhi humbled old Tianlong, With a sharp sword alone he tested the young lad.
Juling raised his hand without much fuss, Splitting Huashan's ten thousand peaks apart.
