The *Human and Celestial Eye* is an important Buddhist scripture compiled by the monk Zhizhao during the Song Dynasty, completed in the Southern Song period. This work systematically organizes the essential teachings, ancestral sayings, and key practices of the Five Schools of Chan Buddhism (Linji, Caodong, Guiyang, Yunmen, and Fayan), making it a crucial document for studying Chan thought in the Song Dynasty. Zhizhao presents the distinctive features of each school's Chan methods in a concise and clear manner, including gong'an (public cases), songgu (verse commentaries), and pingchang (critical remarks), providing later learners with a clear lineage of Chan transmission. As a classic among Chan scriptures, the *Human and Celestial Eye* not only preserves invaluable historical materials on Chan Buddhism but also serves as a key text for understanding the development and evolution of Chinese Chan. It holds a pivotal position in Buddhist history, bridging the past and the future.
