Human and Celestial Eye Sutra

Preface to the Eye of Humans and Gods

During my travels, I always approached with utmost sincerity, seeking guidance from venerable masters on the essential teachings of the Five Schools. Among these topics, there were often points I did not fully understand. Reflecting on this, I thought: If one holds the position of a teacher yet does not even know the names of the key phrases and principles of the schools, how much less would they grasp their deeper meanings? How then could they guide later generations and clarify doubts? Thus, for nearly twenty years, I set my mind on compiling these essentials.

Sometimes I found them in forgotten texts, sometimes on broken stone tablets; sometimes I heard them mentioned by venerable elders, or received them from aged monks in verses of instruction. Whenever I encountered teachings related to the essentials of the Five Schools, I recorded and preserved them. Though this grew into a substantial collection, I had not yet found the time to organize it in detail.

Later, when I arrived at Wannian Mountain Temple in Tiantai, I finally fulfilled this aspiration. I arranged and categorized the material, dividing it according to the Five Schools, and named the collection *The Eye of Humans and Devas*. The wording strictly follows the original works of earlier masters—I did not dare to add or subtract. However, this compilation is based on the teachings of past great masters, meant to benefit beings; it is not my own personal opinion. If it circulates in the world, what fault could there be?

For those who hold the teaching staff and occupy the seat of a master, without this, how could they distinguish the true from the false? May those with deep understanding and broad learning grant their approval.
