Sutra on the Dharani for Dispelling Thieves and Calamities, Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by Tripitaka Master Faxian of the Western Heaven, Presented by the Court

Thus I have heard:

Once, the Buddha was traveling through the kingdom of Magadha, walking in meditation surrounded by a large assembly. They arrived at a cave on Mount Vaitṛhī, located near the Mango Grove, which was known as the Citadel of Indra.

At that time, the venerable Ananda suddenly saw a large band of violent criminals approaching from afar. Seeing them, he was filled with terror, his heart troubled with anxiety, and the hair on his body stood on end. The venerable Ananda quickly went to the Buddha, and upon arrival, he bowed with joined palms and said, "O Blessed One, I see in the distance a great horde of vicious criminals. I beg you, O World-Honored One, to protect us."

At that time, the World-Honored One, upon hearing Venerable Ananda's words, said to Ananda, "Are you afraid of the thieves?" Ananda replied to the Buddha, "I am very afraid, World-Honored One." The Buddha said, "Ananda, do not be afraid. I have a dharani that can remove the danger of thieves." Then Venerable Ananda, hearing the Buddha's words, felt joy in his heart and said, "I pray that the World-Honored One will teach it to me."

At that time, after the World-Honored One had spoken this Dharani, he addressed the venerable Ananda: "You may go now. With this Dharani, create a boundary of protection extending twelve yojanas around. This will bring safety and peace, warding off calamities caused by thieves, so that even swords, blades, and other weapons cannot harm. Furthermore, it will cause those evil bandits to be unable to leave their place, spinning around like a potter's wheel. Moreover, Ananda, if someone faces danger from thieves, they should take a pure white thread, recite this Dharani seven times over it, and tie seven knots. Once this is done, their ordeal will be resolved. All the bandits will be bound as if under restraint and will be unable to cause harm."

At that time, after the World-Honored One had spoken this sutra, the Venerable Ananda and the entire assembly, having heard the Buddha's words, were filled with great joy, faithfully accepted them, and respectfully put them into practice.
