洪武十一年七月初十日，天界善世禪寺住持(宗泐)、演福教寺住持(如玘)，持奉新註《楞伽經》，同考功監令李永等官，於西華樓進呈御覽。當日欽奉聖旨：這經好生註得停當，可即刊板印行，教天下眾僧每講習。欽此。

Preface to the New Annotations of the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra
(臣)聞：法運之興，雖曰在人，亦必有其時焉。有其人而無其時、有其時而無其人，雖欲興之，其可得哉？是故必有聰明聖智之君、當天下又安之時，以興之也。至若《楞伽》一經，我大覺世尊說之於二千年之前，而今上皇帝行之於二千年之後，豈非有其人而有其時乎？不然，何此經東流中國千有餘載，前代帝王未曾有如我聖天子之留神注意，究其旨趣，勅僧徒咸隷習之，有如此之盛也。然吾佛之所以說此經者，蓋欲除眾生之妄心，俾歸於真正之道。而皇上之心，欲天下後世之人皆捨妄歸真、去惡從善，以躋乎仁壽之域，其有契於佛之心乎！且此經之要，不出五法、三自性、八識、二無我，而該乎真妄修性、聖凡因果，皆不外乎一心。能究此心者，則畏惡而遷善、捨妄而歸真，得至自覺正智之地。不能究此心者，則縱情肆欲，流而忘返，至于失其忠孝，敗俗亂常，甘蹈刑辟，如履水火。此吾佛所以興大悲心而拔濟之，亦猶帝王之仁育黎庶若保赤子者也。
(臣)僧(宗泐、如玘)昨於內廷欽承聖諭，以為《心經》、《金剛》、《楞伽》三經，實治心法門，遣情離著，具在是矣，爾輩可不勉乎？(臣)等受命以來，夙夜兢惕，懼無以上副宸衷，於是竭誠殫慮，註釋《心經》、《金剛》二典，已於洪武十一年正月二十八日奏準行世。而《楞伽》以今七月初十日始克註成，謹熏沐繕寫，拜手稽首，詣闕進呈。重念(臣)等才識庸陋，學術空疎，固不敢叨於註釋之列。然承雨露之餘澤，依日月之清光，庶幾少裨流通之萬一云爾。
Your servant, the monk Zongle and Ruki, humbly received your sacred decree in the inner court yesterday. You stated that the Heart Sutra, the Diamond Sutra, and the Lankavatara Sutra are the true gateways to cultivating the mind, dispelling attachments, and letting go of clinging—all are contained within these teachings. Should we not strive to uphold them?
Since receiving your command, we have been diligent day and night, fearful of failing to live up to your profound intentions. Thus, with utmost sincerity and exhaustive effort, we have prepared commentaries on the Heart Sutra and the Diamond Sutra. These were submitted for approval and published on the 28th day of the first month in the 11th year of Hongwu. As for the Lankavatara Sutra, only today, the 10th day of the seventh month, have we finally completed its commentary. Reverently, after bathing and purifying ourselves, we have transcribed it in a clean copy, prostrating with utmost respect at the palace gate to present it.
We are deeply aware that your servants are of mediocre talent and shallow knowledge, lacking in scholarly depth, and we do not presume to rank among those who write true commentaries. Yet, by receiving the abundant grace of your favor, like the lingering moisture of rain and dew, and basking in the pure light of your virtue, like the sun and moon, we hope this effort may contribute, however slightly, to the spreading of these teachings.
