The Viyāsa Sūtra, translated into Chinese by the monk Gautama Prajñāruci during the Yuan-Wei period, is a Mahāyāna Buddhist scripture. This sutra records the great Brahmin Viyāsa inquiring of the Buddha about the retribution of good and evil deeds and the path to cultivation and liberation. The Buddha elaborately expounds the law of cause and effect, the practices of a bodhisattva, and the truth of the cycle of rebirth for sentient beings. The sutra encompasses practical teachings such as giving, upholding precepts, and meditation, while emphasizing the equal importance of wisdom and compassion. This scripture reflects the exchange between Indian Buddhism and Brahmanical thought and holds a significant position within Chinese Buddhism. It provides authoritative basis for the study of early Mahāyāna concepts of karma and ethical thought, offering guidance for Buddhist practitioners.
