The *Mañjuśrīparipṛcchā Sūtra* was translated in Jinling during the Tianjian era of Emperor Wu of Liang by the eminent Indian monk Saṅghapāla. This sutra unfolds in the form of dialogues between the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī and the Buddha, elucidating the core teachings of Mahāyāna Buddhism, encompassing topics such as precepts and practice, the bodhisattva path, the wisdom of emptiness, and the true nature of all phenomena. Its content is profound yet accessible, integrating prajñā thought with skillful means, highlighting the Mahāyāna wisdom represented by Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī. This scripture is a significant canonical text in Chinese Buddhism, having profoundly influenced the development of Buddhist doctrine in China. It is particularly esteemed by the Chan and Huayan schools and stands as one of the authoritative classics exploring the relationship between buddha-nature and spiritual cultivation.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Thus I have heard:

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was staying at Vulture Peak in Rajagriha, together with a great assembly of 1,350 bhikshus. They were all Arhats—those who had extinguished all defilements with no more afflictions. Their body and mind were at ease, their minds and wisdom were well liberated, and all their senses were tamed. Like noble elephants, they had done what needed to be done, completed their tasks, laid down their heavy burdens, and attained their own true purpose. Their paths to rebirth were exhausted; by perfect wisdom, they were fully liberated. Their minds had arrived at complete freedom.

Their names are: the elder Ajnata Kaundinya, Shariputra, Mahamaudgalyayana, Mahakashyapa, Revata, Subhuti, and Ananda. These are the one thousand three hundred fifty arhats.

There were also one thousand three hundred ordinary monk disciples. And there were Vajrasattva, Mahāsthāmaprāpta, Guanyin, the Great and Virtuous Brave One, the Endless Intention Bodhisattva, the Great Intention Bodhisattva, and the young Manjushri. There were countless such great bodhisattvas.
