Chapter 8: Coming and Going
The Buddha told Manjushri: "What comes is toward meaning; what goes is away from meaning. When there is neither toward nor away, neither coming nor going, that is the realm of the holy practice. What comes is ignorance; what goes is non-ignorance. Neither ignorance nor non-ignorance is the realm of the holy practice. What comes is conditioned; what goes is unconditioned. Neither conditioned nor unconditioned is the realm of the holy practice. What comes is consciousness; what goes is non-consciousness. Neither consciousness nor non-consciousness is the realm of the holy practice. What comes is name-and-form; what goes is non-name-and-form. Neither name-and-form nor non-name-and-form is the realm of the holy practice. What comes is the six sense bases; what goes is non-six sense bases. Neither sense bases nor non-sense bases is the realm of the holy practice. This applies likewise up to sorrow, lamentation, weariness, and exhaustion."
Manjushri, what comes is the idea of self; what goes is the idea of no-self. Neither self nor no-self, with no coming and no going—this is the sacred practice. What comes is the idea of permanence; what goes is the idea of impermanence. Neither permanent nor impermanent—this is the sacred practice. What comes is the idea of ending; what goes is the idea of not ending. Neither ending nor not ending—this is the sacred practice. What comes is the idea of existence; what goes is the idea of non-existence. Neither existence nor non-existence—this is the sacred practice. Manjushri, such is the meaning of coming and going.
The Buddha spoke this verse:
