Chapter 12: The Supramundane Precepts
At that time, Mañjuśrī said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! What is the supreme transcendental Precepts—untainted, inconceivable, and free from any place or attachment?"
"Manjushri! Moral discipline, for those beings, is neither self nor non-self; neither action nor cause; neither teacher nor taught; neither practice nor non-practice; neither path nor destination; neither name nor form; neither form's appearance nor formlessness; neither stillness nor non-stillness; neither graspable nor ungraspable; neither real nor unreal; neither body, speech, nor mind; neither worldly nor non-worldly; neither worldly phenomena nor their absence. It neither praises one's own discipline nor condemns others', seeks no faults in others, and does not look down on anyone because of discipline. It neither perceives discipline nor contemplates it, for there is nothing to contemplate and nothing to perceive. Manjushri! This is called the supreme transcendental noble discipline—untainted, unborn, unattached—transcending the three realms and free from all clinging."
The Buddha spoke this verse:
無內寂外寂, 亦無內外寂;
One who upholds the precepts of liberation, Is pure, lacking nothing.
Pride, attachment, Ignorance, and bondage— All such defilements Are completely absent.
No inner stillness, no outer stillness, Nor stillness of both; No inner or outer awareness— The one who knows attains liberation.
