The Sutra of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas Spoken by the Buddha

如是我聞：
This is what I heard:
一時，佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園，與大苾芻眾千二百五十人俱，復有八大菩薩摩訶薩，其名曰：
At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Park in the city of Shravasti, accompanied by a great assembly of 1,250 bhikkhus. There were also eight great bodhisattva-mahasattvas present, whose names were:
妙吉祥菩薩摩訶薩、聖觀自在菩薩摩訶薩、慈氏菩薩摩訶薩、虛空藏菩薩摩訶薩、普賢菩薩摩訶薩、金剛手菩薩摩訶薩、除蓋障菩薩摩訶薩、地藏菩薩摩訶薩，以為上首。復有諸大菩薩摩訶薩，其名曰：
Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Maitreya Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Ākāśagarbha Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Sarvanīvaraṇaviṣkambhin Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, and Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva Mahāsattva served as the foremost leaders. Following them were the other great Bodhisattvas and Mahāsattvas, whose names are:
無能勝菩薩摩訶薩、龍相菩薩摩訶薩、喜意菩薩摩訶薩、無垢藏菩薩摩訶薩、無垢稱菩薩摩訶薩、智王菩薩摩訶薩、無邊軍菩薩摩訶薩、智光菩薩摩訶薩、慧光菩薩摩訶薩、慧燈菩薩摩訶薩、智燈菩薩摩訶薩、梵授菩薩摩訶薩、天冠菩薩摩訶薩。如是等諸大菩薩，皆來會坐。
The Great Bodhisattva Invincible, the Great Bodhisattva Dragon Sign, the Great Bodhisattva Joyful Mind, the Great Bodhisattva Stainless Treasury, the Great Bodhisattva Stainless Reputation, the Great Bodhisattva King of Wisdom, the Great Bodhisattva Infinite Armies, the Great Bodhisattva Light of Wisdom, the Great Bodhisattva Light of Insight, the Great Bodhisattva Lamp of Wisdom, the Great Bodhisattva Lamp of Insight, the Great Bodhisattva Divine Gift, and the Great Bodhisattva Heavenly Crown—these and many other great Bodhisattvas all gathered together in the assembly.
爾時世尊告舍利弗：「汝今諦聽。過東方恒河沙數世界，有一佛剎名無能勝，彼土有佛，名善精進吉祥如來、應、正等覺，現為眾生說微妙法。
At that time, the World-Honored One said to Shariputra, "Now listen carefully. Beyond worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River to the east, there is a buddha-land called Invincible. In that land, there is a buddha named Well-Advanced Auspicious Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One. At present, He is teaching the profound Dharma to beings.
「復次，舍利弗！又過東方十恒河沙世界，有一佛剎名曰無我，彼土有佛，號普照如來、應供、正等覺，現為眾生說微妙法。
"Moreover, Shariputra, beyond this world, as many worlds away as there are grains of sand in ten Ganges Rivers to the east, there is a Buddha-land called 'No-Self.' In that land, a Buddha dwells, named Universal Light, the Thus-Come One, the Worthy One, the Fully Enlightened One. He is presently teaching the subtle and profound Dharma to all beings."
「復次，舍利弗！又過東方三恒河沙數世界，有一佛剎名曰善愛，彼土有佛，號吉祥如來、應供、正等覺，現為眾生說微妙法。
"Furthermore, Shariputra, beyond lands as numerous as the sands of three Ganges rivers to the east, there exists a Buddha realm called 'Beautiful Love.' In that land, a Buddha dwells, known by the title 'Auspicious Thus Come One,' who is worthy of offerings, fully enlightened, and is presently teaching the subtle and wonderful Dharma to all beings.
「復次，舍利弗！又過東方三十四恒河沙世界，有一佛剎名寂靜藏，彼土有佛，號印捺囉計覩特嚩惹王如來、應供、正等覺，現為眾生說微妙法。
"Furthermore, Shariputra, if you pass beyond thirty-four Ganges River sands' worth of worlds to the east, you will find a Buddha-land called the Repository of Stillness. There lives a Buddha known by the title King Indraketu-dhvaja-raja, the Thus-Come One, the Worthy of Offerings, the Fully and Perfectly Enlightened One. He is currently teaching the sublime Dharma for the benefit of all beings.
「復次，舍利弗！又過東方五恒河沙世界，有一佛剎名曰離塵，彼土有佛，號喜功德光自在王如來、應供、正等覺，現為眾生說微妙法。」
"Furthermore, Shariputra, beyond fifty thousand million worlds to the east, there is a Buddha land called 'Free from Defilements.' The Buddha there is called the King of Self-Mastery with Joyful Merit and Radiant Light, the Thus-Come One, the Worthy of Offerings, the Perfectly Enlightened One. He is presently teaching the subtle and wondrous Dharma to all beings."
佛告舍利弗：「若有善男子、善女人等，於此經中聞是諸佛如來名號，一心諦聽，或自憶念，或書寫讀誦、為他解說，彼人命終不墮惡趣，不生邊地、邪見、諸惡律儀、下賤族中，亦不生於長壽天中，亦不生於五濁惡世、飢饉、疾病、刀兵劫中，亦無王難、水難、火難、賊盜、虎狼等難；常生佛剎及天上人間，身相端嚴，諸根具足，眷屬圓滿，得宿命智，具六波羅蜜，行四無量法，通達一切甚深法藏，成最上道。」
The Buddha said to Shariputra: "If good men and good women, upon hearing the names of these Buddhas and Tathagatas in this sutra, listen with full attention, or remember them, or write, recite, and explain them to others—such people will not fall into evil realms after death. They will not be born in borderlands, among those with wrong views, in evil or degrading communities, or in lowly castes. They will not be born in the heavens of long life, nor in the evil age of the Five Turbulences, nor in times of famine, disease, or war. They will not suffer from the dangers of kings, floods, fire, thieves, tigers, or wolves. Instead, they will always be born in Buddha lands, among gods or humans, with dignified and beautiful bodies, complete faculties, and perfect families. They will attain the wisdom of remembering past lives, develop the Six Perfections, practice the Four Immeasurables, penetrate all profound Dharma treasures, and realize the Supreme Path."
佛說此經已，諸大菩薩，舍利弗及諸苾芻，天、人、阿修羅等，聞佛所說，皆大歡喜，信受奉行。
After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the great bodhisattvas, Shariputra, the monks, gods, humans, and asuras, hearing what the Buddha taught, were filled with great joy. They accepted it with faith and put it into practice.

The Sutra of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas Spoken by the Buddha
