> Chapter 26

> Once, in a past life, the Bodhisattva lived as a wandering monk, always dwelling in the mountains and forests. With a compassionate heart, he grieved for the countless beings who endlessly suffered through the cycle of birth and death in the three realms. How could he save them? He calmed his mind and reflected deeply, seeking the great path of liberation to rescue all beings. One day, he noticed a louse on his robe. The itching disturbed his mind and disrupted his resolve for the spiritual path. He reached for it and caught it. His heart filled with sorrow and compassion, and he sought a way to care for it. Finding a piece of animal bone, he gently placed the louse upon it. The louse fed for seven days before moving on. Through countless cycles of birth and death, the Bodhisattva eventually attained Buddhahood and taught the Dharma to guide all beings. At another time, a great snowstorm fell, blocking all travelers on the road. A wealthy householder in the kingdom invited the Buddha and several thousand monks to his home, offering them support for seven days. The householder was reverent and sincere, as were his entire family. Yet the snow had not stopped. The Buddha said to Ananda, "Tell the monks to return to the monastery." Ananda replied, "The host is reverent and sincere, his devotion has not waned. The snow is heavy and has not ceased, and there is nowhere to beg for alms." The World-Honored One said, "The host's intention has been fulfilled; he will no longer offer support." The Buddha then departed, with the monks following him back to the monastery.

> Ānanda said: "How fortunate are these householders! They have had the opportunity to meet and receive the compassionate care of the Thus Come One—the fully awakened, the rightly enlightened, the master of the path, the teacher of gods and humans—along with the monks, some of whom have attained the stages of stream-entry, once-return, non-return, or full arhatship, and some of whom are bodhisattvas, who embody great compassion and guide living beings. Such merit is immeasurable, vast as the ocean; it is beyond praise, as expansive as the earth."

> The Buddha said, "Excellent, Ananda! Just as you have said. It is rare to encounter a Buddha, rare to hear the Dharma, and rare to find a community of monks worthy of offerings—like the udumbara flower, which blooms only once in a great while."
