> The Buddha Speaks the Sutra on Bhikshuni Manifestations and Transformations, Chapter 43

> Long ago, in the city of Śrāvastī, there was a kingdom called Kauśala. Within this land, there was a band of dissolute and wanton ruffians who devoted themselves to violence and evil. They refused to follow the proper path, and the entire nation suffered because of them, considering them a cruel plague. They banded together in gangs, chasing after one another, and committing wicked deeds. When the authorities sought to arrest them, they fled and could not be caught. At that time, the nuns of the kingdom traveled together. Beneath the trees, they concentrated their minds, contemplating the true Path to Cessation without faltering. Among them, one nun was foremost in Wisdom; her name was Cāmā. Another was foremost in spiritual powers; her name was Padumā. Each possessed virtue, and their majestic power was vast and awe-inspiring. One day, the weather grew somewhat hot, and as they walked together, they wished to bathe, so they went to the side of a flowing stream. The wicked gang spotted them from afar, and vicious thoughts arose—their lust surged intensely—and they sought to assault them. They waited until the nuns removed their robes and entered the water to bathe. Then, sneaking forward, they snatched the robes and carried them far away, intending to seize and violate them.

> At that time, the nun saw the attackers' rebellious intent. Her heart ached with sorrow, pitying them for their ignorance. She then plucked out both her eyes and held them in her palms, showing them to the violent men. "What you love in me is only my appearance. Now that I am blind, what is there left to admire?" She then showed them her intestines, stomach, body, organs, and limbs, placing them separately on the ground, and said to the mob: "Where is the beauty now?" Seeing this, the violent men were struck with terror. They realized that the world is impermanent, and that life in the three realms is like a temporary lodging. The body transforms and decays—blood, bones, and filth—nothing worth clinging to. They immediately returned her robes and clothing, bowed down, and repented: "What we have done is unspeakable—wicked and unjust. We beg to be released from this wrongdoing." Kneeling with palms pressed together, they each received the Five Precepts. They then went to the Buddha, prostrated on the ground, and confessed their faults: "We were blind and ignorant, lost in delusion for a long time. We did evil without stopping, unaware that we would suffer calamities life after life. Now, thanks to the Holy One's grace in saving us, and the nun's awesome virtue in showing us her eyes, our offenses are diminished, and we draw closer to liberation."

> The Buddha said: "Excellent! You have already escaped the realms of suffering, and now you shall advance toward attainment. Just as a tree with blossoms and branches will bear abundant fruit, so too does your practice yield results." Overjoyed, the people sought to become monastics. The Buddha readily granted their request, saying: "A righteous mind is the foundation." They were ordained on the spot, guarded their sense faculties, and forever eliminated all misfortunes. The Five Hindrances no longer remained, and the Three Poisons were extinguished. As children of the Buddha, they transcended birth and death, attained natural supernatural powers, and only then came to recognize the Buddha's great kindness.
