> The Buddha Speaks the Sutra on Solitude, Chapter 44

> Once there was a person who, orphaned and poor from childhood, lived all alone. He cultivated broad fields and acquired ploughs and cattle, harvesting the five grains, milk, cream, and butter, along with countless fruits and vegetables. He provided for those who came from near and far to eat, always giving to the poor wherever he went. His reputation for virtue spread in all ten directions. From time to time he would tell parables to help people understand, saying that one should gather companions, for one cannot succeed alone. People all came and settled together with him, and the households around him multiplied, eventually growing into a town. He took a wife and had children, and as his children grew numerous, the father grew older. He instructed his children, saying, "You should practice this: guard your body, speech, and mind, and spread kindness and virtue." But each of the children went astray and did not follow his teachings. They said, "Father, you are old now. Why not be quiet? You teach us nonsense—who would accept it?" The father, troubled by his children, thought to himself, "I was once just one person, and I generously gave to those near and far, even to those who could not repay. Now I have these children, and they disturb my body and mind and will not follow my teachings. It would have been better to have no children at all."

> The Buddha said: "People originally establish their spirit, and when the whole body is clear and bright, they can benefit themselves. Practicing what is right and earnestly cultivating insight, yet failing to understand that all things are originally empty, one perceives a self and a body, and thus gives rise to the confusion of the five aggregates and the six sense-fields. Instead, one becomes deluded by them and does not reach the true path. Only later, upon understanding that all within the three realms is empty, are the five aggregates completely removed, and the three poisons naturally cease—until one reaches the supreme, true path of enlightenment."

> Thus spoke the Buddha, and everyone rejoiced.
