Secret Methods for Curing Meditation Sickness Sutra

Practitioners overcome lustful desires.

Furthermore, Shariputra, if a practitioner enters meditation and lustful thoughts arise, the winds of desire stir the four hundred and four channels. From the eyes to the base of the body, all are shaken at once. The senses become blocked, disturbing the heart-mind, causing it to go mad. Driven mad by this, as if possessed by ghosts, day and night they crave desire like one whose head is on fire. This must be treated quickly.

Here is the method for healing: teach the practitioner to meditate on the womb. The womb lies below the stomach and above the intestines, wrapped in ninety-nine layers of membrane, like the sac of a dead pig. From the womb extend four hundred and four vessels, spreading out like the roots of a tree reaching to every part of the body. It is like a bag of excrement, with one thousand nine hundred sections resembling banana leaves. Eighty thousand worms surround it, circling the four hundred and four vessels and the womb itself. It is like a horse's intestine, extending all the way to the birth canal, shaped like an arm bracelet—round and compact, wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, like a conch shell tooth.

Within the ninety-nine layers, between each layer there are four hundred and four worms. Each worm has twelve heads and twelve mouths. When a person drinks water, the essence of the water enters the channels and spreads throughout these worms. It enters the crown of the Vaira worm and travels down to the birth passage. Every half-month, impure water comes out, and each worm spits out matter like rotten pus. It enters the mouths of the ninety worms and emerges from the six openings of the twelve worms, like foul crimson fluid. There are also worms finer than an autumn hair, playing within all of this.

"Because of the evil deeds and sins accumulated in past lives, these men have four hundred and four veins that spread from the eye roots throughout the four limbs, flowing into the intestines, reaching below the stomach and above the bowels."

In the lungs and kidney channels, on each side, there are sixty-four worms. Each worm has twelve heads and twelve mouths, coiled and clinging together, shaped like finger rings, filled with greenish pus, like wild boar semen, foul and unbearable. At the hidden place below, it divides into three branches; two branches are above, like banana leaves, with one thousand two hundred channels. In each channel, wind worms are born, as fine as autumn down, resembling the beak of the Biranda bird.

Inside the bodies of all beings, there are sinew-colored worms(These worms resemble sinews in shape, linking and supporting the reproductive organs. They activate various meridians, absorbing and discharging vital essence. The male worm is blue-white, the female worm is red-crimson.) numbering seventy-eight thousand, all interwoven and entangled together, forming shapes like stacked rings, appearing like the eyes of a kapinjala bird. Ninety-eight meridians surge upward toward the heart and then reach the crown of the head.

"Listen, men. The eye touches form, and the mind is stirred by the winds of sensation. The four hundred and four channels are driven by these winds, moving without rest. Eighty thousand tiny creatures open their mouths at once, pus flows from the eyes into the channels, reaching the tops of these creatures. They writhe wildly, unaware, and touch the woman's body—male essence, pale and white, is their tears; female essence, yellow and red, is their pus. This is the working of the ninety-eight defilements that have been cultivated over time. These eighty thousand creatures, made of earth, water, fire, and wind, all act together to produce this."

Shariputra, I tell you: “If any of the four assemblies—monks, nuns, laymen, or laywomen—take up the robe of shame and remorse, and take the medicine of shame and remorse, seeking liberation from the suffering of this world, they should learn this Dharma, like drinking the nectar of immortality.”

Those who practice this method should visualize the womb and female reproductive organs, as well as the male body. Imagine all kinds of worms and insects, with mouths open, ears upright, glaring eyes, and pus oozing out. Turn the hand over and place it on the left knee, then steady the breath and count—observe this for one thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine cycles. Once this visualization is accomplished, place the hand on the right knee and observe in the same manner as before.

Then, turning the hand over and placing it on top of the head, all these worms and filthy things first reach the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth—there is nowhere they do not go.

After seeing this, when encountering attractive women or handsome men—even celestial kings or heavenly maidens—the eyes perceive them as one would see a leper covered with sores and crawling maggots, like arrows from hell, like the terrifying forms of half-multi-headed ghosts, like the raging fires of the deepest hell. One should closely observe both one's own body and the bodies of others, recognizing that all beings in the realm of desire possess impure physical forms, just the same.

Shariputra, do you understand this? The fundamental roots and seeds of sentient beings' bodies are all impure—this cannot be fully described. Simply focus on counting your breaths and observe with a single mind. If you take this medicine, you will become a great man, a teacher of gods and humans, a tamer of minds. You will escape the mire of desire, no longer swept away by the river of craving or harmed by the illusions of lust and deceptive, enchanting forms.

"Know that this person has not yet transcended birth and death, yet their body is fragrant and pure like the blue lotus. Neither the fragrant elephant among men, nor the dragon king, nor mighty warriors, nor even Maheshvara can surpass them. This great powerful being is revered by gods and humans alike."

Then Shariputra, Ananda, and all the others who heard what the Buddha taught accepted it joyfully and put it into practice.
