Secret Methods for Curing Meditation Sickness Sutra

Treating the Wound of Profit and Gain

«Furthermore, Shariputra, if a practitioner is burned by the fire of greed, shot in the heart by the poisonous arrow of gain, and blown by the evil wind, then his mind becomes distorted. Day and night, in the six periods, he constantly thinks of ways to satisfy his greed—like a cat watching a mouse, never satisfied; like a seven-step snake spreading poison over its body. Such a wicked person, driven by the desire for profit and sensual pleasures, has five hundred poisonous snakes gathered within his body. At every moment, the poisonous fire of his mind blazes without cease. In the six periods of day and night, the fierce wind of afflictions fans the fuel of profit-seeking, causing it to burn fiercely within his heart. The various snakes compete with each other, burning up the roots of goodness. Because of this, the raging darkness of black demons grows intensely toxic. When he sees others gaining benefits, it feels like an arrow piercing his heart, like a thorn stabbing his eye, like a nail driven into his ear. His senses become blocked. Then the five hundred and five snakes, the four great poisonous dragons, the five bandits with knives, and the six village demons all arise at once. This drives him to madness, and it must be urgently cured.»

Then, the World-Honored One, having spoken these words, fell silent. He allowed the practitioner to see his own body lying within a seven-layered iron city. He saw five rakshasas with mouths gaping open, using eighty iron tongs to pull out his tongue. Countless iron plows, shaped like a forest of swords, plowed his tongue. Between the iron cow's armor, molten copper flowed. Within the bodies of the iron wardens, there were hundreds and thousands of colors of pus, and in that pus, countless maggots beyond measure.

Witnessing this sight, the practitioner's mind was terrified and his hair stood on end. Whether emerging from or entering meditation, he saw that the clothes he wore were like a mixture of pus, excrement, and blood, adorned with iron-beaked insects, a forest of knives, and swords and halberds. He saw the food he ate as resembling tapeworms, with hundreds and thousands of tiny insects growing pus from their ears—pus, urine, and blood. There were eighty beaked insects, wind insects, fire insects, water insects, earth insects, hell insects. All these insects spewed pus and poison, filling his alms bowl. Iron balls, swords, and halberds appeared as his fruits and melons.

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses:

Life and death never cease Because of craving and attachment to flavors. Nurturing these defilements leads one to the grave, Suffering in vain through countless hardships.

The body stinks like a corpse, Nine orifices oozing impurities— Just as dung beetles delight in filth, The ignorant cling to this body the same way.

The wise should contemplate the body, Not crave or stain themselves with the world. Free from burdens, free from desires— This is called true Nirvana.

As all Buddhas have taught, Practicing with single-minded focus, Counting breaths in a quiet place— This is called the path of austere practice.

The Buddha said to Shariputra: "Greed for offerings harms the body and destroys one's foundation of goodness. Its full consequences can hardly be described—you should simply settle your mind and observe this truth clearly. Whoever takes this medicine [of awareness] is a true great person, a teacher of gods and humans, a master who guides and tames. They escape the mire of desire, are not swept away by the currents of craving or the great river of love, nor burned by the misfortune of grasping after profit. Know that such a person has transcended birth and death. Their body is fragrant and pure like the blue lotus, and even the mighty elephant of the world, the naga king, the powerful warrior, or Maheshvara himself cannot compare to them. They are a person of great strength, revered by gods and humans alike."

Shariputra, I say to you: "Uphold this teaching well, and proclaim it to the fourfold assembly. Be careful never to forget or lose it."

Then Shariputra, Ananda, and all the others who heard what the Buddha taught accepted it joyfully and put it into practice.
