Secret Methods for Curing Meditation Sickness Sutra

Songs, Chants, Verses, and Praises

"Furthermore, Shariputra, if a practitioner enjoys composing verses and hymns with beautiful sounds to praise and celebrate, resembling the wind stirring the leaves of the sala tree, producing a harmonious melody, and sounding like the heavenly voice of Brahma to delight others' ears, crafting pleasing words to bring joy to others—because of such influences, they become arrogant and conceited. Their mind becomes like tangled grass, carried away everywhere by the wind of afflictions. They raise the banner of pride, beat the drum of self-importance, and play with trivial matters. This leads them to become intoxicated, like a foolish monkey picking fruits and flowers, never pausing even for a moment, unable to practice mindfulness of breathing—this should be immediately corrected.

The method to cure this is: first, visualize a towering seven-jeweled pillar. At its top stands a celestial musician, whose body gleams like white jade. As they move, they chant verses of praise. From the pores of their body emerge great lotus blossoms, upon which sit hundreds of thousands of monks. Their voices produce ten thousand kinds of sounds, surpassing one's own by a hundred thousand times. Through this practice, one gradually calms their arrogance.

The wise teacher should further instruct the practitioner to carefully observe the top of the banner. There, on the banner's peak, they will see a clear crystal mirror. Those monks who are arrogant because of their good voices and whose minds are impure will appear as *rakshasas* (demons) emitting terrible sounds, with fire shooting from their mouths. Then *yakshas* (spirits) come from all directions, tearing out their tongues and pulling out their hearts to place on the banner's tip. Their hearts tremble and shake; they wail and cry out like the roar of a mad elephant, or make finer sounds like the moaning of *pishachas* (ghouls). Because of this, they also see all kinds of pleasant voices—but then hear people crying out, cursing their own parents and screaming abusively. Through this, they become disgusted, no longer wish to hear such sounds, and give rise to a feeling of renunciation. The wise teacher should then instruct them to contemplate the Eight Types of Suffering, as explained in the teaching on the Eight Sufferings.

He said to Shariputra: "Receive this method of chanting and praising in verse well. Take care not to forget it."

Then Shariputra, Ananda, and all the others who heard what the Buddha taught accepted it joyfully and put it into practice.
