The Method of Music for Healing and Joy

"Furthermore, Shariputra, if members of the four assemblies delight in music and performances without end, this stirs up the winds of attachment, like a horse let loose, like a dog in autumn, or like the stag king of the Iṇi lineage—bewildered and foolish, their minds stuck like glue, following after everything with no restraint. They should urgently correct this."

The method for counteracting this is to first visualize a celestial maiden of unparalleled beauty, with all kinds of musical instruments naturally appearing in her hands, producing ten thousand kinds of sounds. When the practitioner sees this, they perceive this celestial maiden as surpassing ordinary worldly beauty by billions of times, and hear celestial music beyond compare in the mortal realm. Because of this, they become attached, gazing at her form and listening to her sounds.

At this point, they should be taught to contemplate the states arising from this woman's six sense faculties and their objects. Through the power of breath counting, they see that from the lovely eyes emerge six poisonous snakes, which crawl out from the eye faculty and enter the ear faculty. They also see two creatures, shaped like owls, making terrible sounds, breaking through the head and fighting over the brain to eat it. In the remaining four faculties, they see cats, rats, dogs, and jackals fighting to devour one another.

Through this, they come to see all female form as consisting of thirty-six impure and filthy substances—exposed and unclean. The womb and its parasites appear as the woman's ornaments, and the various musical instruments she holds are seen tumbling in excrement. The insects wriggle and make sounds like jackals howling, and what they speak is monstrous and impossible to listen to, like the weeping of demons.

Through this, the practitioner becomes disenchanted and turns away. They then approach a wise teacher, confessing the evil and unwholesome deeds done in the past with a sincere heart, seeking repentance. The wise teacher should then instruct them in the contemplation of impermanence.

Shariputra, I tell you: "Receive this method of healing through music with care, and be sure never to lose it."
