Curing Headache, Eye Pain, and Ear Pain Caused by the Fire Element
"Furthermore, Shariputra, if a practitioner enters the fire meditation, flames arise from every joint, and the large and small intestines simultaneously ignite with fire, stirring and burning the fire channels. When emerging from this state, the head may slightly ache, the channels may contract, the eyes may become red, and the ears may ring—if illness arises as a result, it should be treated promptly."
The practice to heal this is as follows: First, visualize a crystal vase filled with water of various colors, adorned with precious flowers. On each flower there are hundreds of thousands of transformation Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, each emitting a white hair-ray of light that illuminates the flames and transforms them into golden dragons. After seeing this, the practitioner should feel joy and contemplate: "The vase is now placed beneath the fire, and the flower seat above it. I go to the Buddha's presence and reach out my hand to grasp the vase. My hand immediately feels cool." Then you prostrate yourself fully before the vase, bowing to the Buddha. Thereupon, the transformation Buddhas release light from between their brows, and sweet dew falls like rain, permeating every joint. Where it drips turns into crystal, irrigating the large intestine. Both the large and small intestines become filled with sweet dew. Gradually, the fire subsides, and jeweled flowers emerge—these flowers radiate light, colored red and white.
"Again, visualize a Great White (Maheshvara). He rides a golden ox and holds a precious vase of water before the practitioner. Within that water are many medicines; one is called 'Poison Destroyer,' which he gives to the practitioner to drink. He also places a jewel called Candro-maṇi^[Skt. 'Moon Crystal']^ upon the practitioner's crown. From this jewel, various medicines flow, entering the ears, the eyes, and the nose. Merely by seeing this once, all illness is cured.
Maheshvara is a Great Bodhisattva who always delights in the Samādhi of the Heroic March (Śūraṅgama Samādhi). From between his brows, he radiates a great light, which transforms into the form of a Buddha. Five hundred celestial beings wait upon this World-Honored One, who then teaches the practitioner the 'Gates of Sweet Dew' (Amṛta) — methods for curing illness."
He said to Shariputra, "Receive and hold this well. Be careful not to forget it."
Then Shariputra, Ananda, and all the others who heard what the Buddha taught accepted it joyfully and put it into practice.
