Wind-Curing Method
"Furthermore, Shariputra, if a practitioner enters the wind samadhi, they will see their own body's nine orifices, like great mountain streams, emitting five-colored winds. They will also see their own three hundred thirty-six joints, white as Snow Mountain, with wind issuing from each joint, creating all kinds of aggijīva beings. These aggijīva beings, holding iron clubs and adorned with a thousand skulls as necklaces, come to the practitioner together with ninety-eight kinds of dragons and spirits. Upon seeing them, the practitioner's mind is startled and their hair stands on end. This may cause them to go mad or develop leprosy. This must be treated quickly.
"The way to remedy this is to first visualize the four great sages of the Snow Mountains and Fragrant Mountains. Know that they are all great bodhisattvas. Imagine these sages have golden bodies, sixteen zhang tall, holding a flower in one hand and a vajra wheel in the other. Their mouths carry fragrant medicine to shield the practitioner and prevent the wind from rising. The sage holds the flower and recites a mantra over the water. The dragon inhales all the wind, its body swells up, and it lies on the ground unable to rise. Observe that this dragon is like a banana plant: one layer of skin wraps another, and it cannot breathe."
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a mantra, saying:
Homage to the Buddha. Homage to the Dharma. Homage to the Sangha. Homage to the Great Lion of the Shakyas, the All-Knowing One, the Perfectly Awakened One. The Vajra wings of the Great Being, swift and powerful, descend and protect. Return, return. Great one, return. All-pervading, all-illuminating, You who hold all mantras, Pure in heart, surrounded by the assembly of adepts, Come forth, come forth, come forth, come forth. So be it.
At that time, the World-Honored One, having spoken this mantra, addressed Shariputra: "This sacred mantra was spoken by countless Buddhas of the past. I now speak it as well, and in the future, Maitreya and all Bodhisattvas of the Virtuous Kalpa will also proclaim it. The power of this sacred mantra is like that of the lord of the heavens. It can, during the five hundred years after my passing, purify the hearts and minds of impure monks, harmonize and properly regulate the four elements of the body when they are imbalanced, and also cure all four hundred and four illnesses arising from the body and from the four hundred and four energy channels. It addresses the realms created by these energies, the ninety-eight innate tendencies and seeds of desire, as well as karmic hindrances and violations of precepts, completely eradicating them without remainder. This is called the 'Mantra for Skillfully Treating Seventy-Two Afflictions and Troubles,' also called the 'Mantra for Uprooting the Fundamental Ignorance of the Five Aggregates,' and also called the 'Mantra for Directly Seeing All Buddhas and Hearers and Receiving True Dharma That Dispels All Inner Bonds.'"
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses:
The nature of reality has no fixed ground; Observing emptiness, the same truth is found. If you clearly see the four great elements, They cannot be enslaved by defilements’ grip.
Take medicine, practice meditation deep; Chant this dhāraṇī, your vows to keep. With single mind, on all Buddhas reflect; Afflictions and compulsions won’t erupt.
The ocean of suffering will drain away; The river of love and clinging won’t hold sway. All desires lose their root without a cause; One can rightly claim true freedom’s peace.
A mind without worry, still and clear, Roams with supernatural powers without fear. With this dhāraṇī, the path to show, Teaching others the way that they should go.
At that time, the World-Honored One, having spoken this verse, addressed Shariputra: "You should now understand that after my nirvana, in future ages, if there are monks, nuns, laymen, or laywomen who hear this profound and essential teaching on pure precepts, the remedies for the ailments encountered in meditative practice, and this Sovereign Victory Banner Dharani—know that such people have not merely planted good roots under just one, two, three, four, or five Buddhas. They have, over countless hundreds of thousands of Buddhas, cultivated the three kinds of aspiration for enlightenment. That is why they now hear this profound and essential teaching.
If they practice in accordance with this teaching, know that such people are in their final life. Like a swift-flowing stream, they will quickly attain the four fruits of the monastic path and the bodhisattva path as well."
When the Buddha spoke these words, five hundred young Sakya princes progressed even further, attaining full supernatural powers. In the city of Shravasti, one thousand Shudras who had previously practiced meditation and become mentally disturbed heard what the Buddha taught, felt immediate joy, and attained the fruit of Stream-Entry. Eighty billion heavenly beings, freed from the four major illnesses afflicting body and mind, instantly awakened the supreme aspiration for enlightenment, showering heavenly blossoms upon the Buddha and the great assembly.
At that time, the eight kinds of celestial beings in the assembly, upon hearing what the Buddha had said, spoke with one voice, saying: "The Thus-Come One appears in the world precisely to cure those who wander in madness, evil, and false views—like terrifying demons—so that they may recover their original mind. This is like a beautiful flower banner, most delightful and enchanting. Excellent, World-Honored One! Like the udumbara flower, which appears only once in an age."
Descendant of the Solar Dynasty, Prince of the Sakya clan, Nephew of the Star and Moon, Son of Queen Maya.
At birth, he took seven steps, His feet shaking the great universe, All directions' gods responded, With thirty-two auspicious signs.
He abandoned the kingdom like spittle, Seated beneath the Bodhi tree, On the indestructible seat of awakening, He subdued countless demons.
Attaining perfect enlightenment, His face pure as the full moon, His mind's defilements forever gone, With single heart, I bow to him.
Foremost among the Sakyas, Endowed with supreme compassion, He enables all beings To forever escape the sea of birth and death.
At that time, the World-Honored One, hearing these verses from the four assemblies, once again earnestly extended his golden hand, gently touched the crowns of Shariputra and Ananda, and entrusted them with this matter.
Then Shariputra, Ananda, and the rest of the great assembly, having heard what the Buddha taught, rejoiced and put it into practice.
