“World-Honored One! This is the Vast Liberation Lotus Mandala Image Seal Samadhi of Amogha [Unfailing] King. It should be performed in a garden, beside a lotus pond, within a temple, by a riverside, or in a mountain forest. After choosing an auspicious location, use the Wrathful King mantra to empower white mustard seeds and scatter them in all ten directions, commanding that all Vighnas [malevolent spirits] and evil ghosts depart completely. Form this into a boundary square; all celestial beings will gather for protection.

The mandala is thirty-two cubits in size. First, dig away all bad earth, stones, wood, and bones from the ground, and fill the space with clean earth. Build a foundation one cubit high, leveled and adorned. Prepare the surface of the mandala using cow dung, scented water, and yellow earth for smoothing and purification. Measure and demarcate the boundaries with five-colored cords, opening and expanding the boundary courts and paths with various treasures: first white, second red, third yellow, fourth blue, and fifth black. All colored materials must be fresh, clean, and excellent.

In the inner courtyard, place Shakyamuni Buddha. He rests the back of his right hand on his left palm, faces west, and sits in full lotus posture. Next, the eastern side of the outer court: Mahābrahmā, Śakra [Indra], Īśvara, Maheśvara, Maheśvara [Mahādeva], Nārāyaṇa, Śrīdevī, Sarasvatī, Veḷu-vana-svādinī [a form of river goddess], Harvest and Crop gods, Flower and Fruit gods, and all gods of the Form Realm, the Sun god, the Star gods, all Gandharvas and Kiṁnaras.

In the south: Yama, the Death Lord, flanked by all Vetāḍa [vampire] ghosts and Piśāca ghosts, and all Māra [evil ones] forming their retinue.

In the southwest: Nairṛtya [Dushti] gods, flanked by all Rākṣasas [demons] forming their retinue.

In the west: Varuṇa, the Water god, flanked by all Nāga kings [dragon kings] as his retinue. To the south of the gate: Moon god, surrounded by stars. To the north of the gate: Earth god, flanked by all Asuras.

In the northwest: Vāyu, the Wind god, flanked by all Garuḍa kings as his retinue.

In the north: Vaiśravaṇa, the God of Wealth [Kubera/Dhṛtarāṣṭra?], flanked by all Yakṣas as his retinue.

In the northeast: Īśāna [Rudra], flanked by all Kumbhāṇḍa goblins.

Next, the vast ocean water. In the water, in order, there are open lotuses corresponding to the sea-creatures, fishes, and birds on the water. On each lotus throne is placed a moon disc, and upon each moon disc, various seals [mudras]. At the four gates, four Lokapāla kings hold swords and spears, and sit in half lotus posture. At the four corners are placed a double-vajra in a cross shape.

Next, at the four gates and four corners of the outer court, there are jeweled Mount Sunners (mountains of treasures). On each mountain, palaces of various gods, all deva [gods], nāgas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and bhūta [elemental] ghosts.

The four sides are filled with small mountains, and on each mountain are painted various jewel-trees, flowers, and fruits. On the various trees are parrots, śāri birds, white cranes, peacocks, and kṛṣṇa-gīta [cooing birds], all mentioned. Around the necks of these birds are jeweled necklaces adorning them.

In the inner courtyard, there is a garland boundary of lotuses. Next, the boundary of the outer court has upright single-pronged vajra seals placed adjacently to each other. To the east of the mandala, place the Amogha-king's painting. Various banners, flowers, golden and silver lotuses, lotuses made of five-colored silk ribbons, flower-trees made of colored silk, bubble-flowers of five-colored cat’s-eye glass, decorating inside and out.

Use a golden pot or a silver pot, fill it with white sandalwood incense water, aloeswood incense water, and camphor incense water, cover it with a pure cloth, and place it on top. Above that, put a five-colored rain-bow lasso of precious jewels. Scatter sand from the crushed white sandalwood, the crushed aloeswood, the crushed camphor over the lasso. Scatter the mantra’s white mustard seeds on top and place it before Shakyamuni Buddha.

[Place] sixteen silver pots filled with arghya [holy] white sandalwood incense water, with branch-flowers and floating flowers on the water around them. [Place] eight golden plates of the three-white-foods, eight silver plates of various foods, fruits, and melons. [Place] sixty-four portions of three-white-foods and various foods and fruits, arranged both inside and outside. Place thirty-three pure vessels of incense variety, eight pure copper incense burners arranged inside and out, burning the king of incenses.

At the four sides and four corners [directions] of the outermost court, place large copper basins, fill them with pure water, and place floating flowers on the surface. Light eight candles in the inner courtyard. On the four sides of the outer courtyard, burn 108 lamps of ghee and oil.

Regarding these offerings, exclude only wine, meat, the five pungent vegetables, the rest of leftover food, leftover flowers, stinking flowers and sticks. All other things may be used.

Those who draw the mandala or those who serve are asked: bathe on entering and leaving, apply incense to the body, wear pure clothes, and observe the eight precepts. In giving orders, entering the mandala to eat, or changing clothes for the latrine, each should be separate; they mustn't touch.

These attendants for the disciple are spiritually one with the one reciting the mantra. The mantra reciter, at the western gate, forms the seals according to the rule to protect the body and bind the boundary, and invites all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Mahāsattvas, and all devas to sit in their seats. Visualize that these Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Devas, all these Messengers, are truly these beings seated at the seat. Gravely perform the samadhi according to the rule.

The teacher guides the disciple to enter, to initiate the disciple in the ceremony, to pay respects and kneel in sitting, to form the abhiṣeka seal and press it upon the disciple's head, to empowering with the mantra, to transmit the samaya [oath]. Then the disciple will be accepted and protected by the Ten-Direction Tathagatas. One will realize the Samādhi of the Great Unfailing Lasso Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva's Vast Liberation Lotus King Maṇḍala Seal, the Seal of All Families’ Maṇḍala’s Attainment. This erases all ten evil deeds, the five deadly sins, and all evil obstructions, purifying the three karmas, bringing fortune and longevity with peace and happiness.

And [one] attains the mantras and maṇḍalas and samādhis of the Thirty-Three Devas, all Nāga King mantras, all Asura King mantras, all Yakṣa King and Rākṣasa King mantras, and everything is perfectly achieved, and one cannot be harmed, sought after, spoiled, stopped, controlled, or subdued by any external, heaven-destructive forces. If conscious beings oppress and interfere with one another, they will bring calamity upon themselves. That one’s repentance also doesn’t clean it away. Only this Samādhi can rescue them; there is no other rescue. They should keep rotating the seal, reciting the Mothers’ Dhāraṇī mantra, the secret heart-mantra, one thousand eight times in repetition; rotate the Wrathful King seal, recite the Wrathful King mantra a thousand eight times.

The Five Buddhas of the mandala will radiate various rays. The lasso also emits light. The painting will move on its own, giving out seven kinds of light. When one witnesses this sign, his body-mind becomes enraptured with bliss. At that time the reciter brings forward the Bodhi Thought [enlightened intention], recites the mothers’ dhāraṇī mantra, the secret heart-mantra, one hundred eight times. The image will speak: "Excellent! Excellent! Good man! You have now perfected the Amoghapāśa Mahāsattva Dhāraṇī Mantra, the Vast Unfailing Lasso-Liberation Lotus Maṇḍala Seal, the Most Complete Samādhi!"

Within the mandala, he takes the water mantra, empowers it seven times, then pours it on the disciple‘s crown, allowing him to obtain pure six faculties. Avalokiteśvara manifests in dream, awakens [the disciple] to reality, is present, gives the wishes. All Buddhas in their dreams appear present. All Bodhisattvas are always mindful. The Thirty-Three Heavens, Indra, Brahma, all devas, the Four Heavenly Kings, each with their retinue, will protect such a one.

One will realize of Infinite the Fulfilment (Unfailing) Samādhi, the important Wisdom Gate. One will also realize the Fulfilment (Unfailing) Courageous and Vigorous śīla and Samādhi [precepts and concentration] and merits of the sublime Dhūta [ascetic] phases, the Great Blessed Merit stored. One will be endowed with the Fulfilling karma of the Unfailing Six Perfections. One will be endowed with the perfect result of Unfailing Root of Goodness. All dhāraṇī-mantra-mandale-seal-samādhi will be fulfilled for him. He is given Fulfilment of majestic Buddha-field graces with merits. One also obtains the penetrating glory and power (Adhiṣṭhāna) from the infinite numbers of Tathagatas—a means of equation of “sixty-four-times the Ganges river (number) koṭi” but meanings above. He attains samādhi by the Devotee homage and worship without fail in the three realms. He is like the unequaled One, as the Bhagavat of Śarīra Caitya.”
