Sutra on the Holy Tara Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by Tripitaka Master Faxian of the Western Heaven, Presented by the Court

Thus have I heard:

一時佛在香醉山五髻乾闥婆王宮,彼有種種鼓樂弦歌出微妙音。

Once, the Buddha was staying at the palace of the Five-Tufted Gandharva King on Mount Fragrant Intoxication, where various drums, music, and songs produced subtle and exquisite sounds.

Once, the World-Honored One was in the great hall with a host of great Bodhisattvas. Also gathered there were many holy beings — those still learning and those who had perfected their learning — along with countless gods, dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, and other beings both human and non-human.

Likewise present were countless beings who had mastered the power of mantras and who held the vajra. These included Vajrapani, the Wrathful Kings, and hundreds of thousands of mantra-holding kings. There were also those bearing the jewel-crowned Buddha-top wheel kings and others with various mantra-powers and jeweled topknots.

Also attending were the astral spirits, demon mothers, demon lords, the Sakra king, Brahma, Mahadeva, Narayana, the Joyful Lord, Mahakala, the Holy Child Lord, Yama, Varuna, Vayu, the Four Heavenly Kings, and the five kinds of celestial immortals. Together, they all came to the assembly, making vast offerings, surrounding the Buddha with reverence and offering their service with folded hands.

At that time, the World-Honored One was seated among the assembly, like Mount Sumeru rising above the great ocean. Then the Five-Bun Gandharva King, accompanied by seventy-two thousand Gandharva maidens, came to where the Buddha was, playing various kinds of music. Upon arriving, they bowed their heads to the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him three times, and stood to one side. Joining their palms toward the Buddha, they said: "World-Honored One! We now wish to hear about matters that bring benefit. Please, World-Honored One, teach us. The noble Goddess Tara is the compassionate heart of all Buddhas and Tathagatas, the great luminous king who subdues demons, the great mantra-holder, the great wheel-king, deeply displaying profound and mighty power. Out of compassion for me and for the devas, humans, asuras, and others—so that they may always gain benefit and happiness—we beg you, World-Honored One, to teach the hundred and eight names of the noble Goddess Tara."

Then the World-Honored One, having accepted the request of the Five-Bun Gandharva King, praised him, saying: "Excellent, excellent! Gandharva King! You have asked the Tathagata about such matters, bringing great benefit and happiness to all devas and members of this assembly. Listen attentively, and keep this in mind. I will now teach you in due order."

Hearing the Buddha's words, the Gandharva King received the teaching and listened.

At that time, the World-Honored One, for the sake of the Gandharva King and all those assembled, first spoke the sacred Dharani of the Bodhisattva Tara:

Namo samantā niryāṇāvīyāḥ Sarva tathāgatāvīyū Arhānnāvīyā Samyaksambuddhāvīyā Namo bhagavate ārya tārāyā Oṃ Sarva tathāgatā Tathāgatābhūta Kūṭi Pariśuddhe Buddhā Sarva tathāgatā Sarva dharma Gagana amala Viśuddha Dharme Mahā yāna Parivāre Svāhā

At that time, after the World-Honored One had spoken this dhāraṇī, he again proclaimed to the King of the Gandharvas and all those gathered the one hundred and eight names of Tārā Bodhisattva, and spoke this verse:

"This Tara Bodhisattva, Is born from the syllable 'A' itself, Or from the marks of all conditioned things— Neither born, nor ceasing. Her nature is like space itself, Arising from the very essence of space. She appears according to need, One form and many, never obstructing.

Her physical forms appear without limit, Yet her nature is pure, singular, and good. She constantly manifests illusion-like forms, Speaking secret truths and words of reality. She holds the great truth of the ultimate, And walks the path of true practice. She grants freedom from fear, Dwelling in stillness, ever dispelling anger.

She frees beings from terror and suffering, Skillfully breaking the cage of affliction. She unties the bonds of the three realms, And leads all across the ocean of suffering. She accomplishes the Dharma's aims, Perfecting both herself and others. She offers only the highest teaching— The sovereign lord of mantras.

She too is born from mantra power, Giving the great meaning of mantra. In harmony with the great freedom, Her mind and heart are fully aligned. Not clinging to the marks of union, Yet never separate from them. Her focused mind never wavers; Whatever moves, she calms to stillness.

She always sits upon the lotus throne, And is herself born from the lotus. Her eyes are clear like blue lotuses, Always serving as the eyes of beings. Pure, supreme, and exquisite, She gazes upon beings with compassion. With the Buddha's wisdom-eye, undefiled, She embodies a single, whole great compassion.

She constantly arouses a mind of great compassion, And always walks the path of great compassion. Born from great compassion itself, She always maintains a compassionate heart. Unshakable, she showers compassion, Subduing all beings with her kindness. For all who suffer and grieve, She removes their pain and brings them joy.

She gives the Dharma's nectar taste, Saving those in distress and granting peace. In the sea of suffering, she brings cool clarity— She is known as the Mother of Freedom. She shines as a light for all the world, With beautiful features and blazing radiance. Adorned with jeweled hair ornaments, Her pure light is complete and full.

Decorated with pearls and gems, Her hair is deep blue-black in hue, Swirling in the auspicious right-turning pattern— Adorning her unconditioned essence. She turns the unwholesome toward good, Fulfilling all aspirations. Her body is a peerless ornament of grace, Wholly good, and graceful in her going.

She dwells in stillness and constant ease, With great power and miraculous freedom. With six recollections and six super-knowledges, She has perfected all the pāramitās. She teaches the four noble truths well, Opening confusion with great eloquence. Within the illusion of the suffering sea, She appears in illusion-like forms.

She holds a sword to break affliction, Along with bow, arrow, and trident. With staff, club, and spear, And the ḍamaru drum, The vajra of accomplishment, And all kinds of weapons. She looks upon her drawn arrow, Bestowing freedom from fear on all. She hurls the vajra from her hand, Working miracles without obstruction.

She subdues the armies of enemies, Raising victory banners and standards. Possessing great strength of wisdom, She deftly breaks through mighty forces. All darkness and affliction dissolve; Mara's minions and enemies are crushed— As the sun dispels the gloom, She is supreme, the highest of all.

She skillfully crosses the sea of saṃsāra, The highest, most auspicious one. She abides in the true ultimate, Her renown spread far and wide. She always grants love and respect, Conquering herself, and then conquering others. She practices joyful giving at all times, Subtle, supremely peaceful still.

This is the wisdom of the Tathāgata, A wish-fulfilling jewel to be revered. Fully upholding the precepts, She walks the right path through moral discipline. Her sacred voice is supremely subtle, The highest sound through all three times. One subtle resonance, Like a great treasury of space. She brings forth goodness in all worlds, A peaceful refuge without contention.

She is the refuge for all three vehicles, And by the vehicles, beings reach freedom. She reveals the liberation of the three teachings, And all Buddhas rely on the three vehicles. With five faces and five eyes, Born of the five wisdoms' nature, She awakens to perfect enlightenment— This is the great, right path.

All the various marks and signs, Her sublime, pure, and radiant body, All appear in response to beings' needs, Illuminating the world like constellations. She herself reaches the far shore, And skillfully carries others across. Manifesting in hundreds and thousands of forms, She skillfully gathers all good meanings.

Endowed with hundreds of thousands of merits, She transforms the world with single-hearted grace. She gives away all her wealth, Appearing in countless illusion-like forms. She is the great sovereign of the world, Auspicious, honored by all gods. Holding a fine blue lotus, She keeps precepts and grants all wishes.

She delights in goodness and dwells in stillness, With great tranquil wisdom-flame shining bright. All evil obstructions are forever removed; She is the lord over all demonic forces. She rescues from hardship and bestows peace, With an unsurpassed, impartial mind. Struggles and conflicts are forever stilled, And she frees beings from terror of death.

She is the sovereign mother of all spirits, Appearing as the king of yakṣas, Or manifesting as a great dragon With a hundred heads and a thousand eyes. With a hundred tongues and a fearsome form, She holds a true and fearless mind. Her radiant forms number in the hundreds of thousands, And as the earth-goddess she sustains the world.

She delights in fearless speech, And forever dispels plague and poison. Her light is supremely beautiful, Spotless and ever pure. She is the mother of all worlds, Upholding Dharma to benefit all beings. As the supreme consecrated king, All that must be done, she has accomplished.

She possesses the ten pāramitās, Abiding always on the ten bodhisattva stages. She reveals the ten Dharma-vehicles And the ten great truths. She dwells in ten vajra phrases, Erecting banners of the tenfold Dharma. With ten wisdoms she clears all darkness, With the eye that sees the world in freedom. Adorned with sublime features, Boundless as space itself.

Sometimes she appears as a five-powered sage, With pure precepts and sovereign grace. Free from desire, worthy of offerings, Dwelling peacefully on the still path. Thus praised by the fully enlightened, This is Tara Bodhisattva."

At that time, the World-Honored One, having spoken these verses, addressed the King of the Gandharvas and the entire assembly: "These are the one hundred and eight names of Bodhisattva Tara, which I have now proclaimed to you. You should with all your heart receive and uphold these one hundred and eight names of Bodhisattva Tara and the Dharani. The Buddhas of the past and future have taught and will teach these, out of compassion and for the benefit of all sentient beings.

If any good man or good woman, with sincere and earnest resolve, in the early morning, whether for their own benefit or for others, recites these one hundred and eight names of Bodhisattva Tara along with the Dharani—even silently—or paints the Bodhisattva's image on fine cloth or on a clean wall, using the finest colors according to the proper method, or carves the Bodhisattva's form from sandalwood, carrying this out with a pure mind as they wish, and then sets up various offerings before the Bodhisattva's image, paying homage three times daily with joined palms, and with proper concentration performs the visualization, reciting these one hundred and eight names and the Dharani—

This Bodhisattva Tara possesses great power and the highest auspiciousness. Reciting her names erases sins, skillfully breaks the armies of Mara, and is excellent in its beginning, middle, and end, bestowing the methods for spiritual accomplishment.

If anyone, with sincere and earnest resolve, recites this once, seven times, or even twenty-seven times, and while reciting does not omit any phrase or word, then all wealth, glory, and auspicious events as well as accomplishments will come to them as desired, with no obstacles whatsoever. They will be secretly protected by the holy sages, who conceal their own forms, and they will gain the protection of the devas, nagas, yakshas, Shakra, Brahma, the world-protectors, Narayana, Maheshvara, together with the mother of ghosts, Mahakala, Vinayaka, and the lord of pleasure—and even all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, Pratyekabuddhas and Shravakas, all wrathful kings, and the great powerful Wisdom Kings will declare: 'Excellent! Excellent! Good man! You possess the conduct of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and will be reborn in the Buddha-land of Sukhavati.'"

Then the five-tufted King of the Gandharvas, filled with great joy and faith, rose from his seat and, untying his priceless necklaces, gold, silver, pearls, and various precious ornaments adorning his body, offered them to the Buddha. With palms joined in reverence, he gazed upon the World-Honored One and spoke this praise:

「善哉世尊, 甚奇善逝! 常以悲心,
救護一切。 而能為我, 及於眾會,
說此最上, 真實之義。」

"Excellent, O World-Honored One, How wondrous, O Well-Gone One! With constant compassion, You protect and aid all beings. And for me and this assembly, You have revealed this supreme, True and ultimate meaning."

At that time, the World-Honored One, having spoken this sutra, all those great bodhisattvas, along with the śrāvakas, the mantra-holders, the great wrathful lords, all the vidyārājas, the assemblies of gods and humans, and the five-crested gandharvas, having heard the Buddha’s words, were all filled with great joy and received and upheld them with faith, practicing accordingly.
