> The Buddha told Ananda, "At that time, among the assembly there was a lay disciple named Moonlight. This lay disciple came from a wealthy family with abundant treasures. He adorned his neck and head with a pearl necklace worth a hundred thousand yojanas of gold, and he also possessed a precious gem worth the same amount. Moonlight rose from his seat, took off his pearl necklace as an offering to the Radiant Light Tathagata, and presented the precious gem to the Bodhisattva Sandalwood. After making these offerings, Moonlight felt even deeper reverence and great joy, thinking to himself: 'All the treasures in my storehouses and all my possessions are now complete. I can offer them all with a pure heart to the Tathagata and Sandalwood.' He then thought: 'If the noble Sandalwood knows that I have had such a thought and tells the World-Honored One, the World-Honored One will surely send Sandalwood to teach me personally. From then on, as long as I live, I will learn the practices of all Bodhisattvas.' "When the elder Moonlight had this thought, Sandalwood, using his ability to read others’ minds, perceived it and said to the Radiant Light Tathagata: 'World-Honored One! I can clearly see that Moonlight, the lay disciple in this assembly, is generating a profound resolve. He thinks: "I will now give away all the wealth in my home, offering it purely to the World-Honored One." World-Honored One! This lay disciple is capable of generating such great resolve and possesses wisdom, eloquence, generosity, and the eloquence of renunciation. He wishes to ask the Tathagata about this mind of giving. However, because the Tathagata’s virtue and authority are so towering and majestic, he feels ashamed and dares not make this request directly. Excellent, World-Honored One! I now truly ask the World-Honored One on behalf of this lay disciple about this matter.' "Then the Radiant Light Tathagata said to Sandalwood: 'Excellent, excellent, Sandalwood! You have perfected the ability to read others’ minds because you have long practiced and cultivated good roots over countless, limitless eons. Manava, I also know this lay disciple’s mind. But for the sake of all the Bodhisattvas in this assembly, I will set this matter aside and remain silent. Let all the Bodhisattvas in this assembly learn from what you, Sandalwood, will do.' "Then the great Bodhisattva Sandalwood said to the elder: 'Elder, do you truly have such a thought?' The elder replied: 'Noble one, I truly do have such a thought. However, out of respect, reverence, and awe, I dare not ask the World-Honored One directly. Now I see that you, noble Sandalwood, with compassion, are able to sincerely repent before the World-Honored One for all beings in the world who are unprotected, without right mindfulness, and without guidance, serving as their refuge and guide. Seeing this, I feel great awe and deep respect for you, noble Sandalwood. You have never seen beings who slander the Dharma, yet you are able to sincerely repent for them—truly excellent. Moreover, you have compassion for me. You have inquired of the Tathagata about my wishes. If you do not accept my sincere heart, then my aspiration will not be fulfilled. If you ask the Tathagata about my mind, I will follow your guidance and practice accordingly. However, you, noble Sandalwood, bear the heavy burden of sincere repentance for countless beings in countless worlds, and you are also able to inquire about this great burden on my behalf.'"

> At that time, Bodhisattva Candana said to the Radiant Thus-Come One, the Worthy, the Perfectly Enlightened One: "World-Honored One, the Tathagata should also hear the question of the layman Candropāsaka." The Buddha said: "Mānava, I have already heard the request of Candropāsaka. Mānava, what do you think? Do the Buddhas, the Thus-Come Ones, have any desires or needs?" Candana replied: "No, World-Honored One. The Tathagata lacks nothing and has no desires. Why? I have heard that the Buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, dwell on a single robe and a single meal for eons longer than the sands of the Ganges, and sit in a single cross-legged posture for eons longer than the sands of the Ganges, yet their bodies do not waste away and their strength never tires. They do this only out of compassion for sentient beings. Why? They wish to enable all beings to abide in the true Dharma and to attain the authentic teaching. Thus, the Tathagata skillfully uses metaphors and words as expedient means. World-Honored One, even when sentient beings personally witness such various skillful means of the Tathagata, they still do not believe or accept them. How much less will they believe in times when the Tathagata is no longer seen?" Then the Radiant Thus-Come One said to Bodhisattva Candana: "If someone were to place various precious treasures on the crossed knee of the Tathagata, the Thus-Come Ones would never accept them, nor would the disciples, the Hearers, accept these true treasures. Mānava, you should therefore skillfully teach this layman, for his long-term benefit, peace of body and mind. The precious pearl necklace and other fine jewels he offers should be returned to him. Instead, you should instruct him to practice the Dharma. Such material treasures—even the Buddhas, the Thus-Come Ones, and the Hearer disciples neither accept nor use them. Only giving increases merit. Why? It brings benefit to sentient beings. You should also teach this to all beings." At that time, the layman Candropāsaka, having heard the sacred teaching before the Tathagata, took Bodhisattva Candana by the right arm, bowed at the Buddha's feet, and together with Bodhisattva Candana left the assembly and went to his home. After arranging seats and sitting down, the layman instructed his family to open the storehouses, personally commanding them: "Bring out all the treasures in my storehouses and place them before me, so that I may see their quality and know their quantity. Once I know this, I will offer them to the Tathagata, the Worthy, the Perfectly Enlightened One, and to the assembly of Hearer disciples." The elder's wife said to him: "To conceive such a thought is truly a great good. Although ignorant, I have always thought of this but had no opportunity to bring it up. Hearing your kind command deeply comforts my heart. But these treasures cannot be kept forever. Elder, as I see it, this treasure hoard is difficult to rely on. We should only entrust it to the field of blessings of the Buddhas; this merit is rare and will never be lost. Elder, we should think thus: 'The precious treasures buried in the ground by our ancestors for seven generations will ultimately be wasted. The remaining wealth will soon turn to dust. Even if a little remains, who will use it?' Elder, this is a great matter. We must act quickly. Although today we are able to offer it to the Tathagata, the Worthy, the Perfectly Enlightened One, and thus break the heart of hoarding and stinginess, I secretly feel that even this is somewhat late. Elder, such a person is difficult to encounter. We should sincerely make offerings. If we hear the Dharma from him, the arising of the Dharma-mind surpasses any worldly benefit." Then the elder replied to his wife: "I have seen the holy Bodhisattva Candana and heard his words, so a great and rare reverence has arisen in me. Also, this Bodhisattva alone can sincerely repent for the sentient beings who slander the Dharma in countless worlds. Seeing this, I have even more reverence and a rare mind toward him. Moreover, the great Bodhisattvas make great vows, bear heavy burdens for sentient beings, and constantly practice various difficult and austere practices." His wife again admonished him: "Virtuous one, do not entertain other thoughts. You should immediately follow this great Bodhisattva to the Tathagata's presence and offer a deeply reverent mind to the Tathagata. Since ancient times, no one has been able to make such a great offering." At that time, the elder personally inspected all the storehouses in his home, as well as all the treasures buried in the ground for seven generations, which appeared before him. They were countless and impossible to measure. He then said to Bodhisattva Candana: "Holy Candana! I cannot let these possessions cause me to fall into hell and suffer torments, just as those bees that make sweet honey—once the honey is made, whether eaten or not, it harms their own bodies." Then Bodhisattva Candana said to the elder: "Elder, it is so, it is exactly as you say. Elder, your ancestors accumulated these treasures over many years, not without hardship. Yet they could not develop a loving heart to think of even a single sentient being and practice generosity. They merely guarded these possessions with a stingy mind. When their lives ended, they were reborn in evil destinies. Once born there, they had no wholesome thoughts. Even if they wanted to develop wholesome thoughts at that time, how could they, overwhelmed by great suffering? Elder, your relatives could not rescue them; what more can be said of other beings?"

> “Ananda, after receiving this teaching from the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Chandana, that elder made extensive offerings to the Radiant Light Tathagata and the great assembly. Having made these offerings, he shaved his head and became a monk under the Tathagata, devoting his entire life to serving the World-Honored One, yet his wealth was never exhausted. Then Moonlight again asked Chandana the Bodhisattva, ‘Holy One, from now on, what other ways are there to make offerings to the Tathagata? If I know of them, I will practice them all.’ Chandana replied, ‘Elder, I truly do not know where this treasure of wealth came from in the past, nor where it will go in the future. Why? Because it has no origin and no destination. Elder, consider the bees who together produce countless jars of honey and consume it one after another. The bees do not know where the honey comes from, nor where it goes. Who could believe such a thing? In the same way, elder, this treasure of wealth is impermanent and does not abide. Buried underground, it gradually seeps into water and ultimately flows to the great ocean. Elder, you should think deeply: "In my past lives, my ancestors were deceived by the poison of stinginess, greedily hoarding wealth and increasing their evil deeds. Alas, where are my ancestors now? What did their hard work amount to? They merely chased after empty fame in an attempt to surpass others. Entangled in jealousy and addicted to greed, these karmic causes will condemn them to endlessly sink into the evil realms."’”
