The Sutra of the Primordial Vows of the Bodhisattva's Jeweled Necklace, translated into Chinese during the Later Qin dynasty by the scripture translator Zhu Fonian, is an important Mahayana Buddhist scripture. This sutra expounds upon the stages of bodhisattva practice and the philosophy of precepts. Its core teaching presents the fifty-two stages, comprising the ten abodes, ten practices, ten dedications, ten grounds, along with equal enlightenment and wondrous enlightenment. It emphasizes adorning one's mind with jeweled ornaments and upholding precepts with utmost purity to accomplish bodhi. The sutra systematically discusses the three cumulative pure precepts and the sequential stages of the bodhisattva path. It has profoundly influenced the bodhisattva precept system and practice theory within Chinese Buddhism and is highly regarded by traditions such as the Huayan and Tiantai schools. It serves as a crucial scriptural basis for studying the practice of the Mahayana bodhisattva path.

Once, the Buddha returned to the land of King Bimbisāra, to the Bodhi tree where he had attained perfect enlightenment. He sat again in his former seat. When he first became a Buddha, his light was already vast and clear. Now, he emitted forty-two distinct rays of light. Each ray was adorned with the merit-light of countless millions of eons. This radiant beauty completely filled the realm of reality, as serene and calm as empty space, with a focused spirit shining in stillness. He abided in the bliss of ultimate reality, having fully realized the very essence of existence.

His great function had no limits. He was the Dharma King, the Sovereign of Truth, acting as father and mother to all beings. Naturally, a jeweled lion's throne of hundred-thousands of lotus flowers appeared—the very same kind of throne upon which all Buddhas of the past had sat. Their virtue, dignity, and radiant marks were all identical. Their body and mind were pure, blessed and endowed with every good action. The light that penetrated the diamond treasury of enlightenment transformed limitlessly, illuminating all lands. Past, present, and future were now without obstruction. This transformation reached everyone, offering the Dharma equally to beings of all times. All Buddhas achieved this perfect, all-embracing light, unified and alone, the same for all enlightened ones.

At that time, the great assembly of Bodhisattvas had all reached the final stage before Buddhahood, possessing miraculous abilities that extended throughout the ten directions. Their boundless Dharma body guided countless beings, revealing the treasury of the Buddha's teachings and showing the wonderful fruit of Buddha nature. They entered the peaceful state of Nirvana, teaching essential truths that took root in people's minds. Using wisdom from past lives, they gradually guided beings into the boundless, understanding both inner and outer aspects of the path without limit, and seeing all Buddha lands as equal without distinction. With the voice of great compassion, they praised the Buddha's name beyond measure and fully understood the six realms of existence. Wherever they taught, beings exclaimed: "The Buddha remembers us and inspires us to establish great aspirations, showing us all the beautiful and ugly aspects of different Buddha worlds. Throughout the Buddha's journeys and teachings, through his radiant light and miraculous powers, he guides us, educating and opening our minds. The Buddha's fundamental practice—the garlands of the ten abodes, ten practices, ten dedications, ten grounds, the immaculate stage, and the wonderful enlightenment stage—reveals for us the essentials, cutting away our flaws and all doubts. He fully shows us the Buddha's lands, the Buddha's body, the Buddha's transcendent abilities, the Buddha's power, and the Buddha's meditative concentration. Countless transformations, the four equal minds, the four fearlessnesses, the three pure actions, and the eighteen unique qualities—all these unsurpassed teachings and virtuous qualities of the path flow into all lands throughout the ten directions."

To the east, beyond measure, lies the Land of Fragrant Forests, where the Buddha is called Entering Diligence, and the Bodhisattva is named Reverent Head. To the south, beyond measure, lies the Land of Joyful Forests, where the Buddha is called Never Forsaking Joy, and the Bodhisattva is named Awakened Head. To the west, beyond measure, lies the Land of Flower Forests, where the Buddha is called Practicing Diligence, and the Bodhisattva is named Jewel Head. To the north, beyond measure, lies the Land of Path Forests, where the Buddha is called Acting with Diligence, and the Bodhisattva is named Wisdom Head. To the northeast, beyond measure, lies the Land of Blue Lotuses, where the Buddha is called Compassionate Diligence, and the Bodhisattva is named Virtue Head. To the southeast, beyond measure, lies the Land of Golden Forests, where the Buddha is called Consummate Diligence, and the Bodhisattva is named Eye Head. To the southwest, beyond measure, lies the Land of Jewel Forests, where the Buddha is called Supreme Diligence, and the Bodhisattva is named Light Head. To the northwest, beyond measure, lies the Land of Diamond, where the Buddha is called One Vehicle of Liberation, and the Bodhisattva is named Dharma Head. Below, beyond measure, lies the Land of Crystal, where the Buddha is called Great Diligence, and the Bodhisattva is named Wisdom Head. Above, beyond measure, lies the Land of Desire Forests, where the Buddha is called Ultimate Diligence, and the Bodhisattva is named Noble Head.

Thus, the light of these teachings flows everywhere, reaching all without exception.

At that time, the Mani Buddha praised the bodhisattvas from the ten directions, saying they were the foremost in their respective lands, each accompanied by countless eminent practitioners who had come to this great assembly. They bowed at the Buddha's feet and took their seats on jeweled lotus thrones a thousand in number. Then the foremost bodhisattva among that assembly, named Respectful Chief, spoke with the Buddha's sacred power, exclaiming: "How excellent is this gathering! Observing the pure lands where they abide, their dharma robes, the enlightened teachings and virtuous practices, the wholesome foundations of the forty-two sages and saints, the sutras and dharma teachings that demonstrate the Buddha's transcendent abilities, and the way they save beings without limit according to the purity or impurity of their worlds—spreading the path of transformation universally without exception. Similarly, in other Buddha lands, the teaching of the 'Garland of Fundamental Karma' is spoken without any difference or distinction; the path they reveal is identical to what Shakyamuni teaches here." At that moment, the bodhisattva Respectful Chief entered into the great lion's roar of the divine power of all Buddhas throughout the ten directions, and began to inquire about the immeasurable treasury of the vajra garland dharma door of all Buddhas and all bodhisattvas.
