Bodhisattva Jeweled Necklace Primordial Action Sutra (菩薩瓔珞本業經)

The Eighth Chapter: The Collection and Dispersal of the Bodhisattva Jeweled Necklace Scripture

The Buddha addressed Bodhisattva Jingshou and the vast assembly of fourteen billion nayutas present at this gathering: "You have heard the teaching on the forty-two stages of sages, which clarifies the causes and effects of the path of insight. All of you in this great assembly should arouse the mind of supreme enlightenment." He repeated this exhortation three times: "Sons and daughters of the Buddha! Accept it, uphold it, and arouse this mind."

At that time, the Buddha addressed Manjushri, Wisdom Ocean, Vajra Treasury, Blossom of the Way, and eight thousand other bodhisattvas, all of whom were foremost disciples from the buddha-lands of the ten directions:

“You should, for the sake of all beings in the ten directions who are shrouded in ignorance, receive, uphold, read, recite, and comprehend the meaning and flavor of this teaching. For the sake of all beings—past, future, and present—open the path of empty wisdom and lead them into the gate of the Dharma’s illumination.”

At that time, five hundred thousand great Bodhisattvas, all destined for their final rebirth before enlightenment, rose from their seats and vowed to uphold the Buddha's teachings, preserving them for countless eons without decline. Then ten thousand Brahma Kings also rose from their seats and vowed to uphold the Buddha's teachings. Next, innumerable heavenly maidens rose from their seats and vowed to uphold the Buddha's teachings.

At that moment, Bodhisattvas from immeasurable realms beyond and from this very land, having already manifested spiritual powers and entered the samadhi of illusion, soared into the sky, filled with boundless joy. Having heard and vowed to uphold the Sutra of the Merits of the Jeweled Garland, they embraced it wholeheartedly, practicing it continuously, never abandoning the path to enlightenment or the community of sages and worthies.

At that time, eight thousand Bodhisattvas rose from their seats in the assembly. Among them, the Bodhisattva Vajra Flower spoke to the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One, for those teaching the sutras in future ages, beneath the turning of the Dharma wheel, how should those who listen to the teaching receive the Dharma, practice it, and put it into use?"

The Buddha said: “Good Children, you have asked well. First, for those who wish to hear the Dharma, you must confer the Bodhisattva precepts. Then you may teach them the fundamental practices of a Bodhisattva—the six senses and the gateway to the Dharma.

“Good Children, teach them step by step the Four Refuges: take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the Dharma, take refuge in the Sangha, and take refuge in the precepts. When they have attained unshakable faith in these four, then give them the Ten Precepts:

1. Not to kill. 2. Not to steal. 3. Not to lie. 4. Not to engage in sexual misconduct. 5. Not to sell alcohol. 6. Not to speak of the faults of lay or monastic Bodhisattvas. 7. Not to be stingy. 8. Not to give in to anger. 9. Not to praise oneself or belittle others. 10. Not to slander the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha).

These ten are the fundamental transgressions that cannot be remedied through repentance.

“Good Children, after they have received these ten precepts, teach them to support the Dharma teacher. They should offer the finest celestial flowers and incense, hundreds of thousands of bright lamps, heavenly robes and adornments, music, the best food and drink, housing, scriptures, and whatever else is needed—without holding back.

“Those who spread the Dharma should be honored like the Buddha, cared for like one’s parents, and served with the same devotion as the ancient Brahmin practice of honoring the sacred fire. Good Children, like serving the lord of gods (Indra), parents, teachers, and monastics—pay respects three times each day. A true child of the Buddha is willing to give up even their body and life for the Dharma.

“Only to those who seek the Dharma in this way can you teach the original practices of the Bodhisattva—the precious teaching of the garland (Mālā) that has been passed down by countless Buddhas, hundreds and thousands of them.”

At that time, a billion beings in the assembly sighed in admiration and said: “In future ages, when there will be no Dharma, no Three Jewels, and no noble beings—because that era will arise from an evil world—both those who teach the Dharma and those who listen to it will have an extremely difficult task.”

They rose from their seats, weeping in deep sorrow, crying out with great grief. The earth trembled, the oceans surged, the three thousand worlds shook and turned over, and the twenty-eight constellations—along with the sun and moon—disappeared from view.

Then the great assembly withdrew their extraordinary powers, fell silent, and with profound reverence, accepted, upheld, recited, and explained the meaning of these teachings. For ten eons, the Dharma would never fade nor end. With joy and dedication, they put it into practice, paid their respects, and withdrew.
