Guidelines for New Monks on Conduct and Discipline

Chapter 1: Entering the Temple (Eleven Rules)

One, when arriving at the monastery gate, maintain proper deportment. Two, upon entering the monastery gate, pay homage—kneel and recite the customary praises of the Buddha. Three, put away your sitting cloth, press your palms together, and bow slightly; then compose your expression, walk slowly along one side of the corridor, keeping your gaze straight ahead. Four, do not let your arms dangle loosely; maintain an attitude of reverence. Five, do not tread upon the shadows of the temple halls or stupas. Six, when encountering senior monastics, do not bow in front of the main hall. Seven, when entering a hall or stupa, press your palms together and circumambulate clockwise—never counterclockwise. Eight, when exiting the hall, step out naturally, lifting your feet in line with your stride. Nine, know where to discreetly spit or clear your throat—inconspicuous places. Ten, you must pay respects to senior monastics. Eleven, be aware of the designated restroom areas.
