Bhagavad Gita (博伽梵歌)

中譯本前言

Preface to the Chinese Translation

聽說世尊 A. C. 巴帝維丹達史華米巴佈巴的博伽梵歌原本被翻譯成中文實在讓我高興。這是一件艱難而巨大的工作,可是擔任這個工作的青年信徒表現得非常好,我認為翻譯得不但正確,也相當易讀。

I am delighted to hear that His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada's original Bhagavad-gita has been translated into Chinese. This was a difficult and massive undertaking, yet the young devotees who carried out this work performed admirably. I believe the translation is not only accurate but also quite easy to read.

我只曉得別的博伽梵歌的譯本還有兩個,但是一個不太完全,一個却代表另外一種不同的梵歌訓詁的傳統。目前的這個譯本是非常可取的,因為不但包括全部的梵文原本,也包括譯者對 A. C. 巴帝維丹達史華米巴佈巴寫的詳盡注釋所作的謹慎翻譯。

I’m familiar with two other translations of the Bhagavad-gītā. One of them is incomplete, while the other represents a different commentarial tradition. The present translation is highly commendable because it includes not only the complete Sanskrit text but also a careful translation of A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda’s extensive commentary.

中國對吠陀思想和印度人民的宗教性一向未加注意,造成隔膜。這部新翻譯的出現,將在打破這種隔膜上起作用,因此它特別受到我的歡迎。何以特別受到我的歡迎?因為我總希望世界上的不同文化都能得到認可,彼此能夠互相欣賞。

China has traditionally paid little attention to Vedic thought and the religious nature of the Indian people, creating a gap between the two cultures. The appearance of this new translation will help bridge that gap, which is why I especially welcome it. Why do I especially welcome it? Because I have always hoped that the diverse cultures of the world can be recognized and appreciated by one another.

This translation work has not been easy. The cultural gaps mentioned above have created most of the difficulties in presenting this translation to Chinese readers. At times, it has been nearly impossible to find appropriate equivalent terms in Chinese classics to convey the beauty of the Bhagavad Gita. I must also point out how scarce Chinese reference works on Indian literature truly are. China has indeed been deeply influenced by Buddhism, but Buddhism in China has already become Sinicized and no longer represents the pure Indian worldview. I hope that in the near future, these two great peoples of the world—China and India—will engage in meaningful exchanges of ideas and perspectives. I believe this praiseworthy new translation has taken a significant step in that direction.
