The Sublime Meaning of the Commentary on the Sutra of Contemplation of the Buddha of Immeasurable Life is a significant text of the Chinese Buddhist Tiantai school, originally expounded by the Sui dynasty master Zhiyi, recorded by the Song dynasty master Zhili, and later compiled by the Japanese monk Jitsugan. This work elucidates the Sutra of Contemplation of the Buddha of Immeasurable Life through the Tiantai school's teachings of perfect and immediate enlightenment, systematically interpreting the sixteen contemplative methods and the thought of rebirth in the Pure Land. It emphasizes the essential principles of the oneness of mind and Buddha, and the contemplation of mind while reciting the Buddha's name. Integrating Tiantai's śamatha-vipaśyanā with Pure Land practice, this text exemplifies the harmonious beauty of doctrine and contemplation in Chinese Buddhism. It has profoundly influenced the development of Pure Land thought in Chinese and Japanese Buddhism and serves as an important document for studying the integration of Tiantai and Pure Land traditions.

Sutra 407-A

The Commentary on the Sutra of Contemplation. Venerable Master Pai Song of the Ming Dynasty, moved by compassion for scholars who struggled with the difficulty of cross-referencing the texts, compiled and collated them—a truly helpful aid for comprehension. However, the text of the commentary was occasionally edited and abridged, leaving the original incomplete and at times deviating from the original intent. Therefore, I have long wished to revise and re-collate it in order to restore the original text. Obstacles prevented this for years, allowing time to pass fruitlessly. Now, fortunately, having found some leisure, I have fulfilled my long-held wish by carving the revised edition onto woodblocks, so that it may be widely disseminated.
