伽藍
Monastery
世尊與眾行次。以手指地云。此處宜建梵剎。帝釋將一莖草插於地上云。建梵剎已竟。世尊微笑。
The World-Honored One was walking with the assembly when he pointed to the ground and said, "This is a fitting place to build a monastery."
The god Indra then took a single blade of grass and stuck it into the earth, saying, "The monastery is already built."
The World-Honored One smiled.
天童覺頌云。百草頭上無邊春。信手拈來用得親。丈六金身功德聚。等閑𢹂手入紅塵。塵中能作主。化外自來賓。觸處生涯隨分足。未嫌伎倆不如人。
The Venerable Tianjue composed a verse saying:
On the tips of a hundred grasses, spring knows no bounds; Picked up with ease, they are put to use with intimacy. The golden body, sixteen feet tall, is a gathering of merit and virtue; Casually, it takes up its task and enters the dusty world.
Within the dust, it can act as master; Beyond transformation, guests arrive of their own accord. Wherever it touches, life’s provisions are met according to its share— Never mind that its skill and means are no match for others.
無著禪師因往五臺禮文殊。因告辭。文殊命均提童子送出門首。師問此寺是何名額。童子指金剛背後。師回首。寺與童子俱隱沒。只見荒草空谷。
Zen Master Wuzhuo once journeyed to Mount Wutai to pay homage to Manjushri. When it was time to take his leave, Manjushri instructed his attendant, Junti, to see the master out. As they reached the temple gate, the master asked, "What is the name of this temple?" The child pointed behind the Vajra statue. When the master turned to look, both the temple and the child vanished. All that remained before him was a desolate valley overgrown with wild grass.
洞山云。欲觀其父。先觀其子。 烏巨行云。此是兄弟合做底事。還會麼。聖寺忽然隱處。無著己眼親開。童子再三喚時。數目十分具足。
Dongshan said, "To see the father, first look at the son." Wuju Xing said, "This is something brothers should do together. Do you understand? When the sacred temple suddenly hides itself, the eye of non-attachment opens directly. When the child calls again and again, the numbers are fully complete."
明招謙頌云。廓周沙界聖伽藍。滿目文殊接話談。言下不知開佛眼。回頭只見翠山巖。 正覺逸云。寺額突然耀指端。大悲千眼莫能觀。自從一覰金剛背。直至如今作野盤。 佛印元云。樓臺雖有額全無。試問頑童起劫初。忽指金剛看背後。年衰多被鬼椰榆。 道吾真云。前後三三是多少。大事光輝明皎皎。回頭不見解空人。滿目白雲臥荒草。
Mingzhao Qian's verse says: A sacred monastery spans the sandy world, Everywhere Manjushri converses with you. Yet in the moment, you fail to open the Buddha-eye, Turning back, you see only the green mountain cliff.
Zhengjue Yi says: The temple plaque suddenly shines from a fingertip, A thousand eyes of great compassion cannot see it. Since one glance at the vajra's back, Until now, it remains a wild expanse.
Foyin Yuan says: Though towers and terraces exist, no plaque is seen, Ask the stubborn child from the beginning of the kalpa. Suddenly pointing to the vajra, look behind— Growing old, often mocked by ghosts.
Daowu Zhen says: Three times three, before and after—how much is it? The great matter shines bright and clear. Turning back, the one who understood emptiness is nowhere in sight, Only white clouds filling the view, lying in the wild grass.
趙州諗禪師。僧問如何是清淨伽藍。師云丫角女子。云如何是伽藍中人。師云丫角女子懷胎。
Master Zhaozhou Shen. A monk asked, "What is a pure monastery?" The master said, "A girl with her hair in two buns." The monk asked, "Who are the people within the monastery?" The master said, "A girl with her hair in two buns, pregnant."
汾陽昭頌云。橫𮌎抱腹藏龍種。刻膽披肝觸鳳胎。勿謂此兒容易得。須知出自痛腸來。 海印信云。咄。這老竭得恁饒舌。清淨伽藍一時漏泄。金剛門外笑呵呵。菩薩堂中聲哽咽。 古德云。伽藍雖是常清淨。丫角懷胎不識羞。無意氣時添意氣。不風流處也風流。
Fenyang Zhaosong chanted: Holding his belly, he carried the dragon seed; Carving his gall and baring his liver, he touched the phoenix womb. Do not say this child was easily gained— Know that it came forth from the womb of pain.
Haiyin Xin said: Bah! This old fellow is so full of chatter. The pure monastery is all at once exposed. Outside the Vajra Gate, laughter echoes; Inside the Bodhisattva Hall, sobs are heard.
An ancient master said: Though the monastery is ever pure, A maiden with child knows no shame. When there is no spirit, spirit is added; Where there is no grace, grace also flows.
西院明禪師。僧問如何是伽藍。師云荊棘叢林。云如何是伽藍中人。師云獾兒狢子。
Master Ming of the Western Monastery. A monk asked, "What is the monastery?" The master said, "A thicket of thorns." The monk asked, "What are the people in the monastery?" The master said, "Badgers and raccoon dogs."
圓悟勤頌云。毫髮不留。縱橫自由。閫外乾坤。廓落大方。無外優游。明明祖師意。明明百草頭。褫破狐疑網。截斷愛河流。縱有回天力。爭如直下休。四衢道中淨躶躶。放出溈山水牯牛。
石門徹禪師。僧問如何是無相道場。師云。月照水澄澄。青山無異路。云如何是道場中人。師云。我今向汝說。汝還會也麼。
大陽堅禪師。僧問如何是無相道場。師云。不坐菩提樹。𡃤向雪山遊。又云佛殿裏懸幡。
寶蓋山禪師。僧問一間無漏舍合是何人居。師云無各不掛體。云還有位也無。師云不處。
金峯志禪師。因曹山問作甚麼來。師云蓋屋來。山云了也未。師云了也。云。這邊事則了。那邊事作麼生。師云候一日來白和尚。山云如是如是。
梁武帝問達磨起寺(見帝王門)。 般若寺被火焚(見水火門)。
